News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

cowls

This article is regarding Apple's EU profits, the Yahoo statement (I think?) is global profits.

Also the income statement says: All numbers in thousands

So you need to add 000 to the end of those numbers

Well the sample was testing against twitter (obviously prod).

So someone may test against prod if they didn't really know what these things could do.

Re:Why I'm Selling My Google Stock Grant on Wednesday August 12, 2015 @03:14AM (#10046498)
Agree, it seems like a pretty straight forward approach.

Having said that, one year out of university is a good time to take as much risk as you like so its not too important at that stage.

It may even help motivate if you know you will benefit financially if your company does well

Likewise:

1;DROP TABLE users 1'; DROP TABLE users--

Seems a bit hairy to have that in there in case someone tries to run these tests on their prod environment

Re:Ask HN: Which language to learn for long-term work on Monday July 13, 2015 @09:20AM (#9877899)
If you're main goal is "to have some steady income via side project" then it doesnt matter which language you pick.

What matters is the product you create and whether people will use it and/or pay for it.

Re:How renting became the new homeownership on Friday June 26, 2015 @06:22AM (#9783347)
Compared to the interest only part, the savings are significant. Way more than 200 per month.

The capital repayments are not money lost in the same way that rent would be (assuming your house price doesnt plummet and you are forced to sell at that time).

So in the UK (outside London at least) at the moment there is little argument for renting, assuming you can afford the down payment.

London is a slightly different beast mind as prices have skyrocketed and down payments can be huge

Re:We Tried Slack and Regretted It on Sunday June 21, 2015 @04:17PM (#9754833)
No, slack free plan only allows 10000 messages to be saved at any one time. Nothing to do with user limit.

Unbelievable that a service like this would change the key part of their platform without even checking the pricing page to see what free plan restrictions were...

https://slack.com/pricing

EDIT: I stopped reading after the first paragraph, looks like there was a user limit issue too :)

Re:Is it better to buy or rent? on Friday June 19, 2015 @09:25AM (#9744500)
I disagree, this view is too simplistic.

It's very different to owning shares in a company. You have to either buy a house or rent. You cant opt out entirely, whereas you can with shares.

By choosing to rent, you are betting on the housing market being stagnant or falling, if house prices shoot up and you opted to rent, you will need to now pay higher rents or a bigger mortgage.

So there is risk in renting too

If you decided to rent in london instead of buying 3 years ago, you'd be tens of thousands down

Its funny that you post that, he comes off a lot better than you in that thread.
True, but then that is not what he said, you conveniently reworded it ;)
Re:My portfolio if anyone wants to hire on Wednesday March 11, 2015 @08:30AM (#9183689)
You may want to mention where you live and/or are available to work from, also adding a resume may be nice
Thats unfortunate, you just red flagged yourself! I think its time to never ask your interview candidates that question again.
Re:Why we should stop using Grunt and Gulp on Tuesday December 09, 2014 @07:27AM (#8722334)
Hmm, I don't think not fully understanding existing tools and not wanting to read documentation is a good reason. You can easily add prompting with maven, gradle etc, test result reporting, source control integration is all built in.

The 150 flags you mention provide flexibility, you dont need to know them all to get started. With your custom build process, instead of finding a flag that does what you need, you need to implement what you need from scratch, and document it for future developers.

If you use a standard build tool its also easier to hire someone who already knows it, plus understanding them will help you fit into new teams easier.

Unless maybe this is for personal projects, in which case I think its probably less of an issue

Re:Resumes suck for hiring engineers on Wednesday December 03, 2014 @04:30AM (#8692685)
Yep, nonsense in = nonsense out. This "study" is pointless.
Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2014) on Monday December 01, 2014 @10:26AM (#8681477)
I am also interested to know. Could be because they're (generally) cheaper?
Re:Google should be broken up, say European MPs on Thursday November 27, 2014 @10:06AM (#8667509)
I believe the parent comment is talking about website owners. A quick check of a website I run says 96% of hits come from Google. If Google decide to block that site or put it on page 10, the site is dead.
Re:I Hope Twitter Goes Away on Friday October 31, 2014 @08:29AM (#8538367)
Ah, but that depends on what the definition of ""is" is" is
Re:Show HN: Find bugs before your users do on Monday October 13, 2014 @06:37AM (#8448173)
Didn't work for me "Request to start crawl failed" after I entered a web page and clicked try it out.
Re:Ditch your welcome email on Thursday October 09, 2014 @10:16AM (#8432462)
Didn't see that little gem. If I signed up and received a phone call within 30 mins Id probably go ahead and close the account.

Email replies doesn't actually mean anything, would be interesting to see what kind of user rentention and paying customers they got from both approaches.

Also, if someone replies saying "please do not call me". Does this count in the stats?

Re:I'm Agile but My Contract Isn't on Monday October 06, 2014 @12:25PM (#8416719)
The article mentions this as a question if you want to confine the amount of money you spend: “How much do you want to invest before we stop?”

I think this is one of the fundamental issues with Agile, if a client wants to hire a consultancy to complete a project, they want to know how much it will cost and what will actually be completed.

Forming the question as: “How much do you want to invest before we stop?” requires a large amount of trust in the consultancy, personally I have worked with a number that supply below par developers and so asking “How much do you want to invest before we stop?” gives the client no guarantees and the consultancy no obligation to what will actually be delivered.

I think agile can work for in house software teams but not so much for consultancies, where in reality there are normally 2 or 3 of those variables mentioned in the article fixed.

Re:A hilariously sad tale of gender bias on Tuesday September 09, 2014 @11:18AM (#8290555)
So her talk was on tech interviews and someone thought she was a recruiter? Doesn't seem that big a stretch...
Re:Testing a way for you to make purchases on Twitter on Monday September 08, 2014 @12:10PM (#8285557)
This should be forced whenever you try to purchase something
Re:Scottish independence referendum poll tracker on Monday September 08, 2014 @05:55AM (#8284020)
YouGov is the most recent poll though, the others are 1-6 weeks older. So it is hard to compare
Re:Is College Worth It? It Depends on Whether You Graduate on Wednesday May 28, 2014 @12:32PM (#7811160)
They have also rocketed in the UK just 10 years ago a 3 year undergraduate course would cost around £3300 (~$5500).

Nowadays it costs around £27,000 (~$45000)

You dont pay up front but instead get a loan you pay back over your career.

Personally I would still choose to go even with the massively increased fees, as it opens many doors

Re:Smash: The game changing tennis wearable on Tuesday May 27, 2014 @07:38AM (#7803912)
No deadline means he can never win the bet, but whoever he is betting with can, so seems win win ;)
One clock on that page says 4:30. I wader if they reused an image from an earlier version?
I read it, and how I think about coding remains the same as before I read it.
There's a difference between constructive negative feedback and trying to subtly belittle someone.

Not knowing about something is not really a negative feedback point

Re:Why I like Java on Tuesday March 25, 2014 @01:04PM (#7467098)
That's a terrible analogy. More along the lines of using a sledge hammmer to crack a nut is probably more appropriate here. Java is very powerful but sometimes using it for very simple programs can be overkill

Also, have you heard the saying: A bad workman blames his tools

Re:Why I like Java on Tuesday March 25, 2014 @08:19AM (#7465352)
In this case code review is actually the reviewer trying to boost ego and stamp authority on reviewee
