So if it's about that WWDC content, it would only be for a new type of MDM managed app installation (declarative management). No new first-party Homebrew ;)

Transcript (@ timestamp) for convenience:

> 10:33 > Next, packages. macOS 27 now gives IT administrators the option to remove all the files and directories that are installed by a declarative management package, when the package configuration itself is removed. > 10:48 > This ensures unwanted data and files are not left behind on devices when no longer needed.

Re:Linux 7.3 Released on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @04:23PM (#50172135)
I think you're off base regarding the speeds attainable by Thunderbolt (and/or the speeds of hard drives). Feel free to peruse e.g. https://www.sonnettech.com/product/thunderbolt/pcie-card-exp... ; https://docs.broadcom.com/doc/12353459 (on PCIe and SAS bottlenecks).

Besides that, whether a throughput limit defeats the point depends on what the "point" was to begin with, as well as what the alternatives are.

Re:Linux 7.3 Released on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @11:24AM (#50167800)
The point would be to have an enclosure of several/many SAS HDD's that you want to connect. The Thunderbolt to PCIe enclosure holds the PCIe card only, and a separate SAS enclosure holds disks. (The spinning rust type, surely.)

People also connect LTO tape drives using this interface.

Re:Linux 7.3 Released on Monday October 19, 2026 @05:20PM (#50158229)
You can still have an external Thunderbolt-to-PCIe slots box too.
Re:Linux 7.3 Released on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:23PM (#50154330)
Thunderbolt external SSD, would be the only Apple-ish thing. (Formerly of course, FireWire.)

To be absolutely complete, I could mention that at least one SAS HBA PCIe card exists on the market with support for macOS 27, even. Sometimes bundled with other products...

They recognize NAS, still, though for instructions they refer you to the manufacturer: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102423#nas

Re:.name Termination on Thursday September 03, 2026 @12:44PM (#49552959)
According to Wikipedia, "Verisign was the outsourced operator for .name since the .name launch in 2002". That makes the reasoning yet more puzzling.
I want the opposite. I want links to the best quality information - even if I have to hunt down a copy.

They evade judicial enforcement and try to stay anonymous. They've certainly already been sued (and lost by not even turning up). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna%27s_Archive#March_2026_pu... (Contrast to Sci-Hub trying to defend themselves in court, in India, and that leading to no new articles since several years ago.)
archive.org itself reminds me of the Library of Alexandria. It is irreplaceable, and this is a disaster waiting to happen.
"State libraries" such as the Library of Congress. (Which is not regularly destroying books, AFAIK.)
Re:Recycle – Floppydisks on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @11:10AM (#49259629)
"Reuse" ranks higher than "recycle" in terms of best things to do with an item, if it's reasonable to do so.

nice double entendre on "dictate", there.

Never mind "how could this go wrong". How could this go right?

Re:Never Give Them Your Face on Monday June 22, 2026 @01:40PM (#48633278)
I feel like HN should ban linking to the domain. After all, no good-faith commenter intends the result that happens.
Re:Never Give Them Your Face on Monday June 22, 2026 @11:15AM (#48631358)

Holy fuck, man, visiting that with a HN referer serves up a rather NSFW rude image, and evidently sets a cookie to make sure it happens next time too.

Re:What the Fuck Happened to Nerds on Monday June 15, 2026 @12:44PM (#48543865)
I absolutely despised the game "Mafia" when my friends played it in college. Now I know I'm not alone in that.

When I first heard of "Hackers" being equated with startups (viz. this very forum's name!) I was disgusted. A hacker, to me, was personified by Richard Stallman, or a phreaker, or Neo from the Matrix. But here we are.

It still (again?) loads for me.

Wow! The risks of being esoteric

Re:Setting up a free *.city.state.us locality domain on Wednesday May 13, 2026 @11:19AM (#48123111)
Some similarities to *.<lastname>.name -- one of which is that the Public Suffix List thinks you're part of a single site with others you have no control over. Another is the weird registration procedure, but this one is weirder!

It's not faster than userspace, it's much slower normally. On special boards with crypto accelerators it can be faster, and there can be compliance reasons to want it. Re:Can You Disable Spotlight and Siri in macOS Tahoe? on Friday January 16, 2026 @02:28PM (#46650942)
Howard Oakley has made more effort to understand what macOS is doing (and blog about it) than practically anyone else ever.
