Re:Ask HN: Alternatives to Scratch for a blind child? on Tuesday January 03, 2023 @12:39PM (#34234786)
I did and I know it isn't.

Even with certain laws about discrimination against disabilities it still occurs, finding a job as a blind programmer is unlikely unless it's done as a marketing or PR move, the reality is far different from a few edge nodes on the internet and is not something we should be encouraging them to do, I'm not saying they should do nothing but that this field is not suitable for them.

And besides you know nothing about this person or if this story is even real. The reality is doing so requires a special team that is willing to accommodate this specific disability which in reality is a fever dream. There's only so far you can go in being accommodating before it becomes something else. A burden is what it's typically referred to, I'm assuming you've never worked with patients with disabilities, so I'm going to also assume you don't understand what they feel when they have to do certain things in certain ways that force them to rely on others. And I'll just tell you now, it's a very dehumanizing and degrading thing. It is also not something that can be developed to become accessible to them. When I say this field is not suitable for them, I meant it.

There are screen readers and various tools but the reality is that they don't work 100% of the time, every interaction they feel having to rely on a person is personally degrading to them and it happens often, any human with self respect for themselves will not want to pursue this career and telling them it's a good idea is a joke.

Ah yes the personal anecdotes and edge cases. Eh, I saw this coming.

The reality is that this is not an appropriate job for people with severe visual impairment that doesn't allow them to look at a screen, in very few exceptions is it the later, companies are not designed to handle this and realistically cannot.

Programming isn't really suitable for the blind. Well now I wait for the hate brigade for my unhelpful comment. Ironically, Colombia Universities has it as one of the highest paying jobs in their resources.

https://careerdesignlab.sps.columbia.edu/blog/2022/03/07/car...

Not to bash on this article or you but if you are looking through this list, as it's one of the few resources on this topic, it's wrong.

As for using it as a teachers guide or to teach creative thinking, learning scratch doesn't really do that, I'd look into different kinds of puzzles and even that doesn't really do that either. You don't necessarily learn problem solving skills by doing these things and what you are going to need isn't going to necessitate these either, sorry if this isn't helpful or comes off as rude.

I knew of a few blind people who would occasionally do class work but realistically this isn't a career avenue for them. It can be hard to hear especially with this with physical disabilities, hell it can be hard for the mentally incapable such as those with autism but that's another story and one that's actually possible, no offense.

Elon posted that this wasn't possible, and it clearly is.

As with any lithium based battery.

Re:1k True Fans (2008) on Sunday December 25, 2022 @06:41PM (#34132758)
The same thing happens in writing.

Hundreds of creators creating content for these platforms, want to know the average rating is Five Stars. Want to know the average viewership? ~100, to even get to the stage of generating money you need to create several hundred chapters, and essentially beat the system to even make a hundred dollars.

For most of them, they will quit writing after their first series doesn't pick up traction, most don't understand the formula and strategy, most dont have the time or money to try.

Average viewership for light novels reaching 30~ chapters is less than a few thousand meaning which might seem like a lot, but it's not. From there viewership gets lower and lower. It's all based on demand and the only thing people want to read is porn.

Re:Ask HN: Need Career Recommendations on Tuesday December 20, 2022 @04:26PM (#34072827)
You do realize anyone can pretend to be a 17 year old or in this case starting at 13 right? It happens a lot on Hackernews and I'm genuinely surprised people believe it.
Re:Ask HN: Need Career Recommendations on Tuesday December 20, 2022 @07:23AM (#34064916)
Ah this reeks of bs but welcome to hacker news where everyone gets the 350k+ offers. Lol posting the #2 for Epic Games, this totally is very real and very possible for a 10 year old to even do.
Re:Schizophrenia: The new etiological synthesis on Friday December 16, 2022 @07:17PM (#34022548)
It's a neurological disorder and is more complicated than a one off bit, especially when it involved the entire CNS because it's associated with the brain. Many of these issues can't be cured as easy as flipping a bit.
Re:Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists? on Thursday December 15, 2022 @08:08AM (#33998933)
Its not that terrifying the way the these models work they aren't really creating new works, just taking other ones and basically copying them. Honestly, new laws for copyright have to be made I wonder when it will happen. And how the judical systems in the world will deal with it. Or if big tech has enough in the pockets to pretend it isn't an issue.
Re:The secret lives of MI6’s top female spies on Wednesday December 14, 2022 @12:47PM (#33986978)
Ironically there's a female only division in North Korea's army though it's claimed that they are comfort woman from South Korean sources that doesn't really seem accurate. Especially considering the statements made about being solely for Kim Jong Un and the fact that the same sources also go on to state how he exclusively only dates European models, which is also ironic when you consider he seems to be in love with his with who is also Korean. In which she is obese so it's hard to consider him choosing her for her appearance.
Re:Japanese Manga are being eclipsed by Korean webtoons on Monday December 12, 2022 @05:07AM (#33952943)
There is no standardization unlike in Korea where they're at least under the same roof, except for the fact that work conditions are the exact same with the only difference being a small and i mean almost near poverty levels guaranteed pay.

Sometimes they like to argue they make more money as content creators, but that's not true as manhwas require much more artists meaning that they actually bring in less due to the requirements and coloring.

Sounds like the next feature idea for Twitter Blue or whatever it's called now. Usually it's why you don't make these kinds of services because the company can just make it's own iteration.
Re:Is America Stealing TSMC? on Friday December 09, 2022 @07:42AM (#33920595)
TSMC was given it's monopoly through patents given by GE, it's hard to understand the levels of strange nationalism and subtle racism in many of these videos but from my understanding it's the fear of the US leaving Taiwan to China which is very unlikely to happen for the foreseeable future. Taiwan holding the semiconductor industry hostage is not very good for global trade. The Taiwanese as well do not experience an increase in quality of life due to it besides in small groups and causes people who wish to undergo this industry to not be able to find jobs suitable towards them.
No he really doesn't.
Wow this is pretty awful. This looks like it stereotyped writing of a generic black man and doesn't even know how to properly do that, the writers of this season need to do a better job if they're going to try to sell more snake oil.
Re:Mistaken Beliefs About How Much to Talk in Conversations on Saturday December 03, 2022 @12:41PM (#33845351)
wow, that sounds dangerous and an active security risk to any company or individual who did not consent to it and counter intuitive to really anything meaningful at all. The organization that came up with this idea probably is raking it selling other company data to third party organizations and governments. This itself looks like an ad.
Re:Why young women earn more than men in some US cities on Monday November 28, 2022 @07:30AM (#33772786)
Don't say that. Saying that there is nuance to the pay gap is sexism at it's finest. After all we all know that any form of criticism at all is bigotry and that even thinking of it is a thought crime. You wouldn't want to be reported to the bureau would you? /s
Re:Let's Kill the Universe on Monday November 21, 2022 @09:54AM (#33693135)
Zen is about religion, specifically Buddhism it is clear to me you know nothing about religion.
Re:Let's Kill the Universe on Sunday November 20, 2022 @06:37AM (#33680143)
Heh good one. I meant professional help as in seeing a medically and professionally trained psychiatrist not a religion. Just based on his other posts I'm not sure where the others think he's 15 years old? He reads like someone who english isn't his first language and write in a way that makes him think that he's smarter than he actually is. And looking at his profile he's from Turkey so not that unsurprising. He doesn't sound like a 15 year old either people this age sound nothing like this. Anyways this is all I found about him.

"So, I come from an Islamic family, a very faithful one i might add. And, eversince i was a kid i’ve always wondered about existence. I remember looking around me, asking myself questions like “Why are we here?”, “Where IS God?”, “Who IS God?”, “What if everything that i’ve learnt about EVERYTHING is wrong?”, etc…"

Yeah he sounds closer to what someone who is unfamiliar and doesn't really know English sounds like. I know this because I grew up in an immigrant community and well it's very easy to tell when someone doesn't actually know English but knows words. Or knows an incorrect version of it.

Re:Let's Kill the Universe on Saturday November 19, 2022 @05:21PM (#33675431)
Uh, for this author I'd advise seeking some form of help.
Again, it is not. I don't know why you're fabricating these claims but well I guess it's easy to confuse that with a cheap 7-eleven meal if you've only been there once. Which is probably where you're making up these claims. The reality is that the food quality of these meals are subpar and well for it's price you're paying for what you get. But it's easy to confuse food quality of dishes that are unfamiliar to you so I'll just take it as someone pretending to be an expert rather than maliciousness.
No it's not. I went there four years ago the average was 1000-2000 yen for the bare minimum at a small shop for below average food. Stop trying to make japan sound like a fantasy world, it isn't.
Yikes there is no empire
We award nobel peace prizes to warlords and people who commit genocide along with other acts against humanity. What an age we live in when awards are not given post humorously and cannot be revoked.
No it has more to do with creating robots at this size that can take and complete complex tasks not the honey bees.
Ironically this is actually one of the bigger problems to solve for in the generation and is one that has not been solved for.
Ehhh really haven't. While you could argue farming is different due to it being more constricted, it really isn't and well unlike driving, this has a size constraint which has and likely will not be solved for in the near or distant future. It's complicated and might not be solvable. And well the current advancements while they seem nice aren't very useful. I know individuals who work in this sphere specifically and there are several problems alone with basic things such as sensors which are not adequate enough, if anyone attempts to solve this problem in the next decade I'd believe them to be the next theranos.
