Severe Acronym Overload Disorder.

Funny enough, Google's overview box also suggests soad: "SAOD (or SOAD) most commonly refers to the rock band System of a Down"

Re:A deep dive into the RSS feed reader landscape on Wednesday October 08, 2025 @02:07PM (#45518935)
I’ll add https://github.com/stringer-rss/stringer to the self-hosted list. It is my reader of choice since I think over ten years. Never had the feeling of looking for another one.

"I didn't forget my homework I just.. did it orally"
Drag and drop? At least that’s only using a pointer device without modifier key…
I used to mix up terminal windows, and on some occasions tried to call a sudo command on university clusters. But I always followed it up with a sudo echo „sorry wrong terminal“.
Re:Prince Rupert's Drop vs Molten Glas on Monday April 17, 2023 @02:29AM (#35597410)
Funfact, the German term for this drop is Bologneser Träne (tear of Bologna).
Re:We updated our RSA SSH host key on Friday March 24, 2023 @03:42AM (#35286183)
Of course, there is no reason. But humans make errors, and humans deal with those errors.
Re:Self Hosted SaaS Alternatives on Sunday March 05, 2023 @02:45PM (#35033183)
I have something similar, but with traefik instead of nginx. Traefik integrates very nicely with docker using labels, such that the labels configure e.g. domain, path, http-auth etc for the web service running in a container.
Re:Extremely Linear Git History on Tuesday November 22, 2022 @09:03AM (#33705858)
yep
Re:Sile: A Modern Rewrite of TeX on Thursday November 03, 2022 @08:21AM (#33449913)
Some more points, collaboration using e.g. git and its ecosystem, a representation that does not force you to use proprietary software (not sure about libre office for formulae), the ability to easily produce tex files by other scripts, e.g. to compile maths exercises from a set of templates.
Re:Unix didn't use to support '#!', a brief history on Monday July 18, 2022 @01:27AM (#32135007)
Or in Germany, it's sometimes called "Lattenzaun" (lattice fence)
Re:Preview, the Mac app people forget about on Monday May 09, 2022 @04:59PM (#31319668)
Preview is one of my most loved pdf viewers, next to skim for latex writing.

I often have pdfs from my scanner which I want to join into a single document or remove back sides which accidentally got picked up by the duplex scan. It's so easy with preview; if only it could do ocr...

It is enough to own black and decker... Scnr
Re:Bugs in Hello World on Wednesday March 09, 2022 @02:42AM (#30611916)
With that in mind, is this criticism of the Java hello world valid? Its output abstracts more than stdout and maybe in Windows this but would not occur. (I don't know, just discussing)
Re:Firefox Profilemaker on Saturday December 18, 2021 @05:43PM (#29609335)
This is the first time I saw "Fx".
Now, I miss Miranda. It was a multi protocol messenger I used for icq, aim, and jabber. Friends were more into trillian. But one always had bittlebee, I somehow envied this...
I managed to get a part of my family to Threema. Just the part of "you are paying for the product, thus you are not the product yourselves" was reasonable enough.

In my friends circle we are all on telegram (after trying wire which is just buggy as hell), but I think this is mainly due to its multi device story and then fact that it is not WhatsApp.

Re:Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows on Friday December 25, 2020 @10:29AM (#25536977)
Is 7zip really a good format for sharing data? I also use the program for unpacking and I like the context menu integration. However when I send files, I prefer zip because I feel like this is easiest for the recipient to open (no matter if they are using windows, linux, osx, Android...).
He is also known for his Star Trek lectures. As far as I know only in German, but if you understand it, really entertaining https://www.startrekvorlesung.de/
Re:Notepad++ 7.9.1 – pour Samuel Paty on Thursday November 19, 2020 @08:29AM (#25149229)
In this case, "a" could also mean that there were multiple victims, and he was one of them.

But you cannot bill per view or click.
Re:What is the best dumb TV? on Saturday October 03, 2020 @02:44AM (#24670128)
The oven in my apartment doesn't even have knobs, but only touch surface controls. It is so annoying as I cannot quickly set it to one of the three programs I normally use, and holding the "up" button for selecting the temperature is also not working well. Especially since the thing gets harder to control the dirtier my fingers are, and that just naturally happens when preparing a meal.
Re:Microsoft Excel’s 35th birthday on Friday October 02, 2020 @03:14PM (#24666037)
SQL is then the programming language. I am aware that this differentiation is outdated; but if one sees a scripting language as something to write a small, self-contained job and a programming language something bigger more thought through and interoperable, (and with a fair bit of hand waving), I think that analogy fits.

Of course here we do not only have a program but tabular data and operations on them.

Re:Microsoft Excel’s 35th birthday on Friday October 02, 2020 @10:32AM (#24662994)
Excel is the "database scripting language" as I like to call it. Very flexible, just do what you want and see a quick result.
Re:Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use? on Friday October 02, 2020 @04:15AM (#24660304)
Same here. I really like it, because it just does what I expect from an RSS reader.

Handwriting the "one" of ten: 1 or l?
Re:Catching SQL errors at build time on Sunday January 12, 2020 @01:07PM (#22027867)
That reminds me on sqlj https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQLJ

I only heard about that in lectures but unfortunately could not really use it (sqlj was only compatible with Java pre-generics, so that was no option). Nice to see this idea revived.

Re:What's Left for Private Messaging? [video] on Saturday December 28, 2019 @03:43PM (#21901592)
Several years with help of volunteers. There's also a bunch of people writing subtitles for the recorded talks; live streams are automatically subtitles nowadays. Some years ago we would even do manual subtitles for live talks.
Re:SQL Murder Mystery on Sunday December 15, 2019 @10:15PM (#21800558)
Cool to see more SQL role play games, goes next to this bookmark of my former colleague: http://sql-island.informatik.uni-kl.de/?lang=en
Re:YAML: Probably not so great after all on Monday August 19, 2019 @09:03AM (#20737333)
Funfact, even Facebook, Whatsapp, and Telegram support preformatted text in triple backticks.
