What I don't understand is how much people have to say about every single one. Aren't we at the diminishing returns stage yet? Is there really that much to discuss?

you didn't capitalize black so you're racist btw

is this a copypasta? _this_ is your answer to "linux is too hard to use for most people"?
> I don’t give a damn, to be perfectly honest, what some sign posted god knows when with who knows what information, says. This is a man made global catastrophe. Information and research is very clear and very robust.

It's great that you are smarter than everyone else, but if you want policy to change in democratic countries, you need to convince people to vote for politicians who will enact said policy changes. You have to convince people, not make them feel stupid. I would argue that the way you are engaging with the parent comment is actually working against your desired outcome, and I really wish people would realize that and stop all the annoying scolding. You aren't helping!

> it’s actually psychotic how little we talk about the cryosphere collapse

Why would anyone want to talk about this if you are just going to yell at them?

I know it seems silly and it is probably very frustrating, but nothing is going to change unless you get the votes to change it.

Won't they need a reprieve next semester since they'll have to go through the same thing?
Did you worry about any of those things as a freshman?

nice zinger, but they can still vote, and ignoring them does not seem to be working.
Could you elaborate? Which ones do you buy, what do they do, and what made you want to start taking them?
Re:Deepfakes Tore a High School Apart on Friday May 22, 2026 @10:04AM (#48236031)
No you are correct. A lot of people seem to think that the solution is to tell all the girls who are affected by this to get over it and that they should be flattered.
I don’t think this is a japanese thing. The way they are askew feels familiar; I have definitely seen food that looks weirdly “off” on other menus. It’s probably just a way to stand out, like how so many models have gaps between their two front teeth. You’re gonna remember the one that’s different.
Usually threads like this fill up with comments about how "think of the children" is always a lie used to justify something draconian. I agree with that to an extent, but for those who think that applies here, is there _nothing_ we can do as a society to address this? I'd like a better answer than "let parents deal with it," and the whole "this wouldn't be a problem if america wasn't so puritanical maaaaaan" argument is total bullshit that completely ignores the young girls who get hurt by this.
Re:Sam Altman's home targeted in second attack on Monday April 13, 2026 @11:34AM (#47753529)
I love when the comments start out a little spicy, all the spicy comments get flagged or removed, and the top comment becomes "wow, I can't believe all these spicy comments, I thought HN was better than this."
> I shouldn't be downvoted for my English I think, but that is the reality.

How do you know? Is it possible the downvoters just didn't like what you said?

This is what I can't get over - who in their right mind would _ever_ give an agent enough access to delete prod data?
Re:Stephen Colbert going down swinging on Wednesday February 18, 2026 @02:43PM (#47065354)
Why should this be on a website for technology news? It's about a tv show.

There are pretty clear guidelines on what should and shouldn't be posted here, and nowhere do they say "but also anything else you personally think is important overrides everything above." Just read and comment on the nyt website!

Re:Undo in Vi and Its Successors on Tuesday February 17, 2026 @11:50AM (#47049592)
fun fact: sublime text also has a vim mode (called "Vintage mode" which is just hilarious) that is built-in but disabled by default, rather than an extension like in vscode. vim keybinds are just the best.

It's funny she mentions the horrible grammar in the leaked sony emails because that's what I remember most from it too. This one always gets a laugh from me.

why did you make a new account just to make this comment?
that's all that happens on this website
I think the percentage of people who drink alcohol and have never done any drugs is >50%, and I would bet that the percentage of people who smoke weed (not just once) who have also done other drugs is like 95%. There are plenty of people who will binge drink every weekend but think that smoking a joint is too far. I find that strange, but it is surprisingly common.

Comments like this just make me think people are jealous that right wing groups aren't good at organizing.
Re:FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE on Wednesday January 28, 2026 @02:07PM (#46800099)
your comment will surely help!
This will sound crazy but this is why I still use 4chan. Everyone is anonymous, there is no voting, and the only moderation is to remove illegal things or flagrant rule breaking. It's 99% dogshit (and worse), but if you go into it knowing that, you can find some good stuff sometimes. Not good as in morally good, just sometimes someone will post a link to a video or an article that will actually make me think.

Here, and on reddit, and anywhere with voting or people caring about the number next to their username, it's the most popular opinions at the top and everything else at the bottom or flagged. I genuinely don't understand what people get out of that.

And I guess I should specify that this is also why political topics get flagged. Sure, it probably has a lot to do with people flagging stuff that goes against their beliefs. But I also think that political threads here offer absolutely nothing aside from reaffirming existing beliefs. No one is trying to change anyone's minds, everyone is just yelling at each other. Threads about actual tech stuff can be very interesting and I do learn things from them sometimes. But political threads here are worthless.

edit: I do not mean /pol/, no one should ever go there

Good point about the scaffolding. I stayed for a few days in the financial district last year and walking around outside the hotel felt like being underground.
Yes. This is currently the best tool to handle python environments and dependencies and it's very popular. If you learn uv, and you really don't need to learn that much other than how to specify a python version and your dependencies, you (hopefully) should be set for a long time.
Yes! There is no character limit here. It drives me bonkers when I read comments like that one. What is anyone supposed to get out of it? It has the same meaning as "lol".

Comments like that are why I left reddit - they do not foster discussion, they are low-effort attempts at getting updoots. If the only meaning that can be extracted from a comment is "I disagree", it shouldn't be a comment, it should be a downvote. It's a waste of an indentation level.
