Exactly. So far they've demonstrated nothing more than a camera.

Re:Was Intrade being manipulated over the last month? on Wednesday November 07, 2012 @11:50PM (#4756532)
One Intrade commenter from London claimed he was set up to earn about $20,000 in arbitrage against Betfair. If you expect the manipulation to continue over a period of time (which I certainly did, and wished I could register on other betting sites), it's worth it to deposit larger sums of money with bank transfers despite the wait.

At one point I wondered whether the manipulators were making large purchases once per day and whether this could explain why the different betting sites never came back in line with each other. In that case, a savvy arbitrageur might take advantage of prices while they're at their widest differential, and then wait to buy more the next day. I thought I saw a pattern like this going for a few days in a row but it was gone by the time I felt confident enough to trade around it.

But what happens once people get used to the new duration of the yellow light? Do they approach it based on what they're used to from all the other yellow lights they've ever seen? Then the longest yellow light in the country is the safest one, until all the other lights are lengthened to match it.

Re:The Ph.D Grind: A Ph.D Student Memoir on Sunday July 01, 2012 @04:07AM (#4184200)
I had no idea you could get faculty from another institution to be on your thesis committee. More importantly, I had no idea PhD students could do summer internships to supplement their measly stipends. If I knew that I might have applied to grad school already. It seemed like the only people in my undergrad program who had a good idea of how to plan out their academic careers were the ones whose parents were university professors. I felt alienated and left to fend for myself and I still don't know how to break back into that world.
Re:I don't "get" art on Monday June 18, 2012 @05:44AM (#4125681)
What separates Rothko and Pollock from the artists in the link is that other people have tried to capture what they captured, and failed. I never got it until I finally saw other rectangle blobs and other paint drippings. There is at least something there to be felt.

Tracey Emin, on the other hand, is nothing more than a name, as demonstrated by this masterpiece: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Nicholas_Serota_Makes_an_Ac...

It's easier than general relativity, is that good enough?
I've been wondering how easily a situation could arise in which an underdog could try something like this on Kickstarter and give up, and end up having done nothing but provide free research into market demand that a bigger player with more resources can then take advantage of.

Re:A hacker creates his own version of Google Project Glass on Wednesday April 11, 2012 @05:03AM (#3826603)
More importantly, it explains why both the world and the overlays appear in focus. I have yet to see an explanation for how Project Glass does the same. Apparently it's based on the same technology that went into Babak Parviz's contact lenses, which use Fresnel lenses to make the overlay appear in focus when your eye focuses on real-world objects several feet in front of you. Fresnel lenses also impair image quality. And you'd need another lens on the opposite side to undo the projection on light coming in from the world around you.

I'm wondering whether the reason that Google's glasses only use a small display in the corner of one eye is that the see-through image quality is simply not good enough to justify covering the wearer's entire field of view. If you look at the photos of Sergey Brin wearing them, they are not very transparent, at least from the angle the photos were taken: http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/6/2929927/google-project-glas...

Re:Why I Left Google on Thursday March 15, 2012 @02:18AM (#3707130)
I don't think the exclusivity was a long-term strategy, but rather a natural progression from its beginning as a site for Harvard undergrads. It was really useful at providing specific needs for college students at the start. It was easy to find who was in your classes so you could ask for homework help or invite people to work on a group project back when everybody listed their classes through Facebook's central app. But after it opened up to everybody and a whole bunch of apps appeared, there were multiple competing class-listing apps with no clear winner and you needed to use all of them if you wanted to see everybody in the class. It became less convenient and most students no longer bothered to list their classes at all.

Once Facebook understood the appeal the site had to the general population, they realized that it would be better for them to create an ecosystem where network effects were optimized for the decentralized user base as a whole rather than the centralized subnetworks that made the site take off in the first place. At each step, they focused on what worked for the users at the time.

Google+, on the other hand, really did deliberately start out as an exclusive network, largely for people in the tech world, and it hoped to quickly transform into something with universal appeal. You can draw your own conclusions about how well that worked.

That sounds like a source of stress right there. If the company gives you a phone I assume it means they own your ass every moment of every day.

Now I'm disturbed by the lack of parens. What about situations where I have one pair of parens exactly contained in another, like in a one-argument defmethod?

Edit: Now I see that I didn't notice that this situation happens in the "let maxcol 0" line in that image. I need to compare the colors on the line below to make sure I'm mentally parsing that line correctly.

Creepy. Do they give these cells an electric jolt to make them exercise?

Re:Overrated: Bully's R Rating Should Mean the End of the MPAA on Sunday February 26, 2012 @04:30AM (#3635223)
That documentary showed pretty well that the MPAA is harsher on films with gay themes, but it wasn't convincing in other areas. There's a good reason that sexual content is more likely to lead to a stricter rating than violent content: parents believe their kids are more likely to emulate the sexual content. When I was a teenager, I, for one, copied a lot more sex moves from films I'd seen than I did karate moves.
Re:Overrated: Bully's R Rating Should Mean the End of the MPAA on Sunday February 26, 2012 @04:23AM (#3635217)
You can see R movies as long as there are no Mormons in your class. Poor Mormons... I bet none of their friends called them for at least a month after the big movie-watching week at the end of each school year.

Bit rot is a feature. It allows genes that don't impact survival to attain greater diversity within the population so that, if the environment changes and the gene becomes relevant, some part of the population may be better able to adapt.

Why now? It doesn't escape my notice that an influential British magazine is majorly dissing the Argentine government just as Britain and Argentina are getting into another tiff over the Falklands and a bunch of oil is found there.
