Re:Hang on to Your Firefox on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @10:10PM (#49530929)
Of my cohorts, I am probably the most loyal firefox fan. That said, I've broken up with it twice, and am currently in the second breakup b/c at work we're mandated to use the Island browser due to security reasons, and my work machine absolutely cannot handle two browsers running while I also have all of the work dependencies and IDEs and slack running.

I know much of this is subjective, but the chrome experience just feels better / faster. This is what precipitated the first breakup, and when I think about the situation now, it feels like this dynamic is probably long lasting. It does make me sad though. I'll come back to firefox later, perhaps when I get a laptop refresh and can be a little more cavalier with RAM.

has iTerm2 improved significantly in the last couple of years? I remember feeling the speedup when I went from iTerm2 to kitty, so that's surprising to me.

claude had a time loop error and was trained on this post

Most are, implicitly at least. But at the time, there was definitely a period of transition with many shops continuing to use subversion for a while.
Re:Why is Claude an Electron app? on Saturday February 21, 2026 @06:29PM (#47106176)
There's a pretty big difference between the understanding that comes with reviewing code versus writing it, for most people I think.
Re:Why is Claude an Electron app? on Saturday February 21, 2026 @06:28PM (#47106166)
I think about this a lot, and do everything I can to avoid having Claude write production code while keeping the expected tempo up. To date, this has mostly ended up having me use it to write project plans, generate walkthroughs, and write unit and integration tests. The terrifying scenario for me is getting paged and then not being able to actually reason about what is happening.
Re:Markdown CLI viewer with VI keybindings on Tuesday February 10, 2026 @09:40PM (#46970081)
This is an odd comment on "Hacker" news. There's a joy to be had in making things like this, even though there are better alternatives and it's often a weird thing to do in the first place. I often do not post the things I create here and elsewhere because I dread this kind of feedback. What do you hope OP takes away from your post?
Re:Xcode 26.3 unlocks the power of agentic coding on Tuesday February 03, 2026 @09:39PM (#46880752)
I have noticed something similar. I feel like I have done that so many times for XML files. Perhaps it is re-establishing the settings when any kind of update gets installed.
Re:Scott Adams has passed away on Tuesday January 13, 2026 @03:01PM (#46606993)
There were a number of Motorola-inspired ideas that made their way to Dilbert while I was working there in the late 90s.
Re:Rust–: Rust without the borrow checker on Saturday January 03, 2026 @11:37PM (#46484969)
Hah I love things like this, where the compiler leaks out.
Re:Ruby's Website Got an Overhaul on Sunday December 21, 2025 @11:59PM (#46351453)
This is true, also for people immersed in this world. Sometimes the dark mode of a site is ass, and it's better to set a preference for that site to use light mode to make it more usable.
No, but the whole article felt definitively AI-generated.
Re:1,180 root system drawings on Saturday October 18, 2025 @04:59PM (#45630306)
Always good to have a weed puller in your toolshed. A stand-up puller, specifically, that operates as a lever, allowing it to first grab deeply and then through a rotation of the handle it pulls out quite a bit of the root system. A lifesaver if you have a rain garden which is really just a synonym for weed garden.
Re:Claude Sonnet 4 now supports 1M tokens of context on Tuesday August 12, 2025 @08:44PM (#44883440)
Yeah, this. Each project I work on has it's own markdown file named for the ticket or the project. Committed on the branch, and I have claude rewrite it with the "current understanding" periodically. After compacting, I have it re-read the MD file and we get started again. Quite nice.
Re:Claude Opus 4.1 on Tuesday August 05, 2025 @02:02PM (#44801804)
Claude Code is the superior interface in my opinion. Definitely start there.
Re:Detekt – A static code analyzer for Kotlin on Thursday July 24, 2025 @08:26AM (#44669831)
There's a ton of reasons why that may happen. One of which being that someone may not have known about it and wanted to share.
Re:1000 Days Without Drinking on Monday June 30, 2025 @09:50AM (#44423257)
My story is similar to yours, and I feel what you're saying. I would just be a different person today if I had avoided it altogether. Internally I have resolved to just keep looking forward, and only very occasionally, backwards.
This is inspiring me to collect more of my own data -- great job!
The bounce to me has always seemed more intuitive than the bang, but man, when it comes to the quantum universe I've learned to just check intuition at the door.
TBH I mostly use LinkedIn for this kind of thing. I do have a resume for the odd occasion I need it but LI mostly suffices. It's hard for me to know whether it would gain traction outside of my demographic, and so I can only speak narrowly.
It sounds kind of anachronistic, although I think there might be some markets for that outside of this bubble. If you're looking for critique, I think your landing page is extremely noisy for such a simple idea. You'd probably get better traction with a more focused design.
Re:My AI skeptic friends are all nuts on Sunday June 08, 2025 @06:44PM (#44219944)
I finally got access to it -- much better experience than I had expected. I really like being able to choose the voice/cadence. I wasn't able to get it to auto-send after a few seconds, but that might have been due to being in a noisy environment.
I honestly used to be a skeptic on AI, at least for how it was being marketed, until agentic workflows became available. I've been in this biz for about 25 years now and have seen a lot of fads come and go, but framed correctly, this one has legs. If you're using it as a foundational part of your development budget I have bad news for you. But if you're using it as a handy assistant that you can guide to do things in minutes that would take you hours it's a force multiplier.

One interesting thought I had about it after I used Claude Code to generate a lot of documentation for a new codebase I was being bootstrapped into was that it's kind of a hedge against the loss of mental acuity that is natural with aging. I, and friends of mine, have admitted that you kind of get less quick/sharp with age. The tradeoff here is wisdom. But with a tool like this I'm able to move much more quickly than before.

Re:My AI skeptic friends are all nuts on Tuesday June 03, 2025 @09:02AM (#44169561)
Thanks a lot. This sounds great for my envisioned use case which is having conversations while on a road trip to research ideas that pop into my head. Not having to tap the screen makes it much safer.
Re:My AI skeptic friends are all nuts on Tuesday June 03, 2025 @06:26AM (#44168384)
Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to getting voice mode, but after doing some searching I saw that it still needed the user to hit the "send" button after they are done talking. Did I misread, or was your experience that it would reply to you after you finished talking without the need to press anything?
Re:Stepping Back on Sunday June 01, 2025 @11:11AM (#44151474)
I materialize my thoughts as I obsess over the problem in my notes. I find that doing this often helps me reframe the problem and the facts that I currently know, which helps me discard branches that will be fruitless.
I'm going to check this out when I get a chance -- it would be rad if your webpage had an animated gif or video showing it working, too.
Re:The Great Displacement Is Already Well Underway on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @03:55PM (#43976991)
I'm a Collin with two l's. Not as uncommon as Gregg but it's never been a burden. I also don't bother correcting people unless it's happening a lot with the same person and someone I expect to interact with a lot.
Re:Multiple Security Issues in GNU Screen on Tuesday May 13, 2025 @01:42PM (#43975603)
No, haven't tried recently, but will make a note to do so. Agree that a couple of years is an eternity :)
