News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I am so glad to see an unpolished early look and an honest evaluation of about five percent error rate in the YouTube video. The really cool stuff will be the applications on top of `subvocal` though at least in my opinion.

So this could take "noise canceling" to a whole new level if you could somehow "speak" across a loud bar or across the world, for that matter. Being integrated into something like Signal or similar end to end encrypted platform would be interesting as well.

Re:Azure's Weakest Link – Five Full Cross-Tenant Compromises on Saturday October 31, 2026 @12:15AM (#50313158)
Reaching an actual human at Microsoft isn't enough. You have to reach the correct humans which is a much harder task. For example, you might have an idea. What if azure devops had a field for date component only, not date time, just the date because it would help you in an internal project. Can you find out who to reach? Even if you work at Microsoft, I would bet you cannot. Even when you find a defect in an internal product you are using, getting to a human requires you to go through layers of nonsense. I distinctly remember my manager telling me to not even bother explaining myself to the first support chat and to simply ask them to escalate. I was impressed at how they managed to make security a part of your review though. I never thought getting buy-in to update Newtonsoft.Json would be as easy as it was but a CVE meant you had to update it to whatever made the security flags happy.

Once I could reach the actual engineering team to look at the internal tool to look at the bug I had to report though, they were very responsive. The tool for communicating was cumbersome and made me feel like a vendor / customer relationship even though you are supposed to be the same team but once they realized it was an actual defect and not some harebrained feature request, they fixed it relatively quickly.

as long as you follow the herd (for example, disable password ssh login, only allow ssh key login, use something mind numbingly boring like debian stable, set up unattended updates, update and reboot every night, etc, don't use any exotic packages etc) I suspect you are simply not a worthwhile target even with LLM agents as opposed to humans

I wouldn't say once again. I would say continues it's slide but that wouldn't make a good headline, would it?
The way I think of it, divide the tracks into segments. Before you put a train on a segment, you must ask a question - is there a train on it. There are only two answers possible, No, and something else. If it is something else, stop. Don't let the train on that segment.

There are optimizations possible like make segments smaller etc but the original algorithm is trivial. If we can't figure things out, we make segments longer and we slow down the trains until we can. I am positive for a sufficiently large track segment and a sufficiently slow train, we can always answer the question with a no.

I can't imagine how anyone can complain about this. The community revolted. The team listened. What else do we want?

From what I understand, the dryer is a bigger concern. In the UK and in Europe, you are already ahead of the curve by reducing use of the electric dryer.

> In my case, it is the fact that a secure and free (as in speech) alternative does not exist that leads me to believe that.

I don't think that is a logical statement. Just something doesn't exist, does not prove that it can't exist. You need a stronger proof than that to show that in my opinion. At some point, you have to empower your users and trust them to do the right thing.

The nearest place to me was

> 0.8 miles

Ok great I thought that I can walk...

however, it is actually 1.9 miles when walking according to Google Maps and the path lacks sidewalks.

The Apple Home View is proof that Apple could implement some kind of user switching / login and log out scheme if they wanted to do so on the iPad as well.
I have to be logged in to azure vpn to access the development environment of the web application I work on because heavens forbid if our users stumble upon a non-production version of the application on the Internet and yet these people just put everything out there for everyone to see. At least I think it should require a CAC card or a PIV card to access sensitive data like this, shutting down immediately if the card presence is not detected somehow.
> In the town of Abu Falah, near Ramallah, at least 80 settlers, some of whom were carrying firearms or clubs, gathered to stop Palestinians from harvesting their olives, using slingshots to hurl rocks at the farmers in view of Israeli military vehicles. When some of the Palestinians then picked up rocks to defend themselves, the Israeli military fired teargas in their direction.

This has become beyond ridiculous. I have personally gone from full support for Israel to now not even supporting Israel's right to exist. And I can't be the only one. I feel sorry for the (clearly increasingly rare) "normal" people of Israel but they will soon need to move out of Israel to not be bundled in with the crazies.

I wouldn't have believed you but it will take close to a decade to build under like half a mile of sidewalk near me with like actual construction time planned in weeks in contrast to the overall plan.

I don't think I would blame the environmental consultants though. This is just how we do things now.

The USD 2B path train stop at WTC became USD 4B+ and nobody went to prison for it. I don't think it should have even been USD 2B. All we needed was a path train stop.

I'm sorry but isn't this the whole point of free and open source software? We have been saying this for decades.

Maintainers, you don't owe anyone anything. Put your own life and mental health first. Things like we specifically disclaim all liability and that this software is available free of cost with no assumption of ongoing support etc.

Re:How California Closed the Montana License Plate Loophole on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @06:31AM (#49990819)
I feel like the law should differentiate a rich person doing this with many luxury cars versus me with one car who maybe in a few years needs to move across states.

For example, if I own a 2014 Nissan Versa and I register it in Colorado in January 2020 and then I need to move to Texas in August, I won't get Texas plates immediately when I get to Texas. I've "paid up" in Colorado for as long as my tags are good. I shouldn't have to get a Texas license plate until my existing one expires. However, I will eventually get Texas tags, just a few months too late.

Also I don't mind people going to Montana and buying luxury cars there if the cars actually stay in Montana. However, there should be scrutiny on these expensive toys more than regular cars we need to live because we don't have a decent transit story.

I feel like intent and magnitude should play a big role in legislation.

If it is a blanket leaf blower ban, that is indeed asinine. However, I will gladly support a ban on two stroke engines for leaf blowers the same way I support requiring drivers to wear seatbelts.
> after pleading guilty

Let me start by saying that I am not a lawyer but that being said, I don't know how I feel about this. I don't like the taste of plea bargain in my mouth. It feels a lot like the government basically tells any suspect, plead guilty or you will face the maximum fury and unlimited budget of the government. Especially after Aaron Swartz, the fiction that prosecutors and even judges are fair and balanced arbiters of justice has evaporated away.

> They may not be ignored at the whim and folly of scientific researchers and academic institutions.

I for one support scientists and researchers and trust them to follow all the necessary protocol than any pencil pusher. I don't even consider prosecutors living organisms more like a machine whose only goal is career advancement, justice be damned. Expecting grace from them is folly.

I understand not wanting to pay the cost of LiDAR like twelve years ago but the price has come down since then. At this point does it even make sense to stick to cameras? What possible reason is there other than an aging Elmo's ego?

Even if it prevents like ten deaths, the LiDAR will have paid for itself.

Re:How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:33AM (#49892997)
I apologize I am not very good at expressing myself. Could India be better? Of course! Anyone can be better than what they are. Like a fish that lives in water doesn't ever think about water, an Indian living in India does not think about the absurdity of how powerful a District Collector / District Magistrate (DM) / Deputy Commissioner (DC) is in contemporary India.

> I think that's a bad read of Indian institutions. They are incredibly powerful - in fact, they are far too powerful. That's the problem. The license raj is the epitome of authoritarian, centralized political and economic power. I suppose it was justified on socialist grounds, but it would be fair to say that saying so doesn't make it so! Before 91, nothing, and I mean nothing, could happen without government say-so. > The problem with Indian institutions is that they are far too powerful, centralized and bureaucratic. Just read the article - the problem was created by a lazy, corrupt, powerful and centralized bureaucratic system. The solution was to dismantle it and decentralize power.

What you are saying is absolutely true. the bureaucracy in India is absolutely lazy, corrupt, powerful, and centralized. It is also arguably one of the biggest reasons why India has never had a (successful) military coup. You could even argue the inefficiency and the sluggishness of the bureaucracy is a feature and not a defect.

Re:How Delhi cut electricity loss from 50 to 5 percent on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:17AM (#49892737)
> It baffles me that country still has strong anti-capitalist views.

I wouldn't call the "license raj" of India as anti-capitalist. India arguably has the strongest of institutions of all the countries in South Asia. However, even its institutions and regulations are pathetically weak.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster

You probably also saw a previous post right here on this orange website when someone tried to repatriate their business money outside of India. It was painful just to read that they had to get approvals from iirc sixteen different government agencies to get their own money that they brought in from outside of India back. Not profits, not proceeds, a fraction of what they put in.

Neither of these two cases is due to "anti-capitalist" views of India. If you look at what was India before Moghul rule and British rule, you could argue India has never been socialist before.

I think workers everywhere should have "strong anti-capitalist views", because unrestrained capitalism is just anarchy.
