you’re taking an anecdote and blowing it out of proportion to fit your preformed opinion. yes, when you start with the tool and do literally no work it makes bad PRs. yes, it’s early and experimental. that doesn’t mean it doesn’t work (I have plenty of anecdotes that it does!)
the truth lies in between and the mob mentality it’s magic or complete bullshit doesn’t help. I’d love to come to a thread like this and actually hear about real experiences from smart people using these kind of tools, but instead we get this bullshit
if you have used it for more than a few hours (or literally just read the docs) and aren’t stupid, you know this is easily solved
you’re giving into mob mentality
engineers are testing promising new technology. a mob (of probably half or more bots) is having a [redacted] perpetuating the anti-narrative they huffed themselves up into believing. and now we’re in a meta-[redacted] as if either A) redditors and armchair engineers here have valid opinions on this tech and B) marketers and founders with massive incentives to overpromise are telling a true narrative
why? we don’t have to do it. we could actually look at these topics with nuance and not react like literal bots to everything
(sorry I’m just losing my faith in humanity and taking it out in this thread)
redbull does not give you wings. it’s disconcerting to see the lack of nuance in these discussions around these new tools (and yeah sorry this isn’t really aimed at you, but the zeitgeist, apologies)
think for yourself
it also opens the PR as its working session. there are a lot of dials, and a lot of redditor-ass opinions from people who don’t use or understand the tech
this stuff works. it takes effort and learning. it’s not going to magically solve high-complexity tasks (or even low-complexity ones) without investment. having people use it, learn how it works, and improve the systems is the right approach
a lot of armchair engineers in here
wtf are we talking about
you stand out when you obviously hide
Codex is OSS (and Aider of course) and serve as decent alternatives
+ the minimalism in the age of ad-les enshittification is refreshing
I’d also advocate you don’t expose your unsecured database to the public internet
if I send a death threat over gmail, I am responsible, not google
if you use LLMs to make bombs or spam hate speech, you’re responsible. it’s not a terribly hard concept
and yeah “AI safety” tends to be a joke in the industry
as a project, we're big on using the right tool for the job -- of course we often think that's Ibis. a lot of effort has been put into the ergonomics, taking learnings from pandas and dplyr and SQL and various other Python data projects the team has been instrumental in. if you weren't aware, the creator of pandas also created Ibis and the current lead developer (Phillip Cloud) was also very involved in pandas. we have plenty of other blogs and things on the documentation about the project's ergonomics and thoughts on data processing paradigms
this specific blog isn't intended as "marketing speak" or to somehow be distasteful, it's intended to inform the Ibis community that we're deprecating a backend and justifying why
