Re:Can you beat 99% of programmers? Try the FizzBuzz challenge on Wednesday December 14, 2011 @06:45PM (#3354296)
I always thought that was some kind of urban myth that programmers made up to make themselves look better.

Re:Web Designers should all be using this idea by now: Font Icons. on Thursday September 29, 2011 @09:25PM (#3055126)
earlier today I was wondering whether someone already created a compilation of those, thanks a lot op!

I think these icons are great for protyping/design mockups.

Re:Bank of America to charge monthly fee to debit card users on Thursday September 29, 2011 @09:02PM (#3055046)
fun fact: In Germany it's exactly the other way round at least for 99% of the banks. You will get a free debit card at every bank but you have to put down a considerable amount of money as prepayment for a credit card additionally to the yearly fees. If you want a Deutsche Bank credit card they will lock 1000 EUR before they issue it to you and you will pay around 60-100 EUR yearly.

Re:Firefox 7 Live: Download Here on Tuesday September 27, 2011 @09:03PM (#3045988)
after I've worked with a fast browser like Chrome I just can't go back
Re:Firefox 7 Live: Download Here on Tuesday September 27, 2011 @09:02PM (#3045984)
I did that and installed a couple of extensions that add old functionality and Firefox now crashes pretty much randomly
Re:Firefox 7 Live: Download Here on Tuesday September 27, 2011 @01:20PM (#3044253)
what bothers me most is that they made the whole top part (including title, menu bar etc if you choose to enable it) transparent. I personally just find that horrible. Screenshot: http://0.tqn.com/d/browsers/1/0/Z/c/-/-/firefox-5-show-menu-...

Here is a screenshot comparing FF 3.5 to 4: http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/4/2009/12/500x_firefox...

(3.5 is right)

Re:Firefox 7 Live: Download Here on Tuesday September 27, 2011 @12:52PM (#3044124)
After Firefox 4 came out I had to install so many extensions to make it feel like 3.6 that it became unstable and incredibly slow. Because Firefox apparently tries to be more like Chrome I decided to switch to the original and I haven't looked back yet. I only fire up Firefox when Chromes built-in developer tools lack functionality compared to Firebug, which is rarely the case. The way Firefox decided to take makes me really sad, as I was a big Firefox supporter, until they screwed me over with the new UI. I hope this is not too off topic, but I never got the chance to comment on the changes.
did they actually receive $281,989 in funding or is that a bug on kickstarters side?
Re:Show HN: gpgsend.com - encrypted emails from your browser. on Sunday September 25, 2011 @04:21PM (#3036641)
I don't know what the term for those sites is. Something like http://nopaste.info/. How do you plan to implement file encryption in JS?
Re:Why All Employees Should Be VIPs At Your Company on Sunday September 25, 2011 @03:06PM (#3036482)
I've never been to Silicon valley, in fact I've never been to the US but I personally feel that this picture the author draws of "old" SV is very idealized. This rant contains high amounts of nostalgia and therefore does not seem to be entirely rational. I would love to know if SV used to be like O'Neill describes it in his article.
Re:Show HN: gpgsend.com - encrypted emails from your browser. on Sunday September 25, 2011 @02:55PM (#3036452)
did you do the JS implementation of PGP yourself? Really cool service btw. Maybe you could write up a nopaste-tool which encrypts the stored contents before they get posted to your server.
Re:Chrome Privacy on Saturday September 24, 2011 @06:14PM (#3034464)
wow, I was assuming that everything is stored encrypted on Googles servers. Would be cool if someone could clarify this, as the explanation in the Google help is a bit vague IMHO.

I think Ghostery deserves some promotion here : http://www.ghostery.com/ available for all major browsers. It blocks near to all webbugs including the facebook social plugins.

the Pirate Party is a very liberal party and as such attracts all kinds of people with varying viewpoints. Im pretty sure that holocaust denial is not the norm.
Re:Ask HN: Is it feasible to use redis as the only datastore? on Sunday September 18, 2011 @11:58AM (#3010479)
As far as I know there have been improvements in the virtual memory field. However it is not recommended to use redis if the data you want to store in it exceeds the amount of ram in your server.
Re:Ask HN: Is it feasible to use redis as the only datastore? on Sunday September 18, 2011 @11:54AM (#3010470)
Redis operations are performed in RAM and while you can specify an interval where its contents should be written to disk you risk loosing some data if it closes unexpectedly. If that is not a problem I don't see why it couldnt be used as the sole datastorage.
