Hugged to death?
Here in Canada, when it gets below -15c or so, my iPhone will give me an error that it's out of it's operating temperature, and needs to "cool down". Californian developers, I guess.
Re:SpaceX SN9 Explodes on Landing on Tuesday February 02, 2021 @05:41PM (#26008016)
On the 'repeated failures' piece, that's somewhat new for aerospace. Traditionally, things would be over-engineered, and losing a test vessel would be considered a bad thing. SpaceX seems very content to blow up a bunch of rockets on their way towards not blowing up rockets.

This seems to have caused at least part of their recent issues with the FAA, who seem to be less ok with explosions. It will be very interesting to see if this iterative approach leads to more reliable rockets down the line!

Yes, but they only replaced the lowest-end 13 inch pro at this point, and are still selling the higher-end Intels. The performance versions will follow next year.
Watching this unfold as a resident of the next-neighbourhood-over was fascinating. At first everyone was excited that a big, American company would choose Toronto for this sort of project. The initial RFP from Waterfront Toronto had very clearly been put together with them in mind.

But development takes a long time, and between the initial agreement and the plan being released, public opinion had turned strongly against big-tech. Those Waterfront Toronto board members were basically fired for not foreseeing the change in public opinion.

My knee-jerk reaction to this was to a find a confounding variable.

Maybe people get more violent when the weather is hot, which is also when we use the most energy? I know cops always complain about hot days.

Re:The Streets of San Francisco on Friday October 04, 2019 @05:46PM (#21162176)
I've had this thing happen twice now while visiting SF, where I'm following google maps, end up walking through the Tenderloin, and have a bunch of people try to sell me drugs.

The second time I asked one of the guys trying to sell me coke why that was happening, he said it was really the only reason white people walk there.

The whole thing was very different from the super-liberal picture of SF I had in my head.

Prices rise.
Re:Some tea bags may shed billions of microplastics per cup on Wednesday September 25, 2019 @03:17PM (#21074259)
There have been a lot of news stories about microplastics being basically everywhere recently.

Is there any good research on if it's a problem? What are the effects on humans of consuming them? What are the effects on aquatic ecosystems, etc?

Re:Why Are America’s Three Biggest Metros Shrinking? on Tuesday September 10, 2019 @05:17PM (#20933856)
There are probably also some age-cohort demographics at play. As millennials start to have families, the suburban (or small-urban) lifestyle becomes more appealing. It's a big generation, so they pull the demographics around. Who knows, they might even drag some of their Boomer parents who were living the fun empty-nester-downtown-lifestyle back out of the big metros with them.

This can work for travellers, but seems impractical for crew going back and forth many times each day.

By helping to diversify petro-state economies in the gulf, you can sort of make the case that they're helping?
One issue with this method is that the Fortune 500 has companies in it that are hundreds of years old. Only 26 of them were founded this century[1]. Alexander Hamilton founded one of them.

The circumstances today could be somewhat different. That said, as a non-american looking at starting a company, America still looks like a pretty great place to do it, to the extent that I still sometimes think of moving.

I've hear the Hoover Dam proposed, and theoretically any existing dam could be converted? Just need to pump some water back upstream when there's excess load in the system.

Here in Canada a lot of our energy is hydroelectric and I know there's a lot of talk about this sort of solution in Quebec.

Re:The Fight for the Future of YouTube on Monday July 08, 2019 @04:40PM (#20386534)
The author seems to, at several points, conflate political bias with truth.

While there may be some correlation there, to me it would seem more valuable to point people towards factual, reputable, meaningful content regardless of whether it's left or right wing (if the user seems to be looking for educational or editorial content). Letting videos cite sources could go a long way there.

If, on the other hand, a user seems to be looking for trolling videos of one political persuasion or another, why not let them go down that rabbit hole? That can also be fun.

This debate is happening in a lot of jurisdictions. Here in Ontario we're refurbishing our older reactors, at a massive expense, in order to get off of coal, and reduce dependance on gas.

It's resulted in very high energy costs (especially compared to our hydro-power rich neighbour, Quebec), drove the provincial government out of office, and is one of the things driving energy-intensive industry out of the province.
