The cloud existed before k8 and k8's creator has a far less mature cloud than AWS or Azure.
But this thread has convinced me of one thing. It's time to re-cloak and never post again because even though the community is a cut above some others at the end of the day it's still a bunch of marks and if you know the inside it is hard to bite your lip.
One of the funniest statements ever following an assertion of empiricism.
The left's idea of "leading" is always amusing. The left in the socialist paradises in Europe will keep depending on US technology and posting on sites created by US innovation. At least until they depend maybe on China and then they won't even have the choice to practice evading their own country's speech laws.
The leftists in the US will just keep abusing the privileges they are afforded by those who keep them in luxury because that's just what they do. The system is good to them that way.
I'll now go "wage slave" so I can afford to travel to places that produce old buildings you visit.
1) People asserting that the court was right or wrong followed by some "argument". The court simply ruled. Anything beyond that is the same as people who use statistics to provide "evidence" about their preconceived notions.
2) Examples that mean one thing to someone and something else to another but both sides claim right or wrong. See 1. For fun, I'll do an example but not claim it proves something. Most well known professional wrestlers work for a tyrant. Until very recently when another billionare entered the game they didn't have a lot of choices. Just like uber drivers they are mostly told what to do and even have sold their real names. They can also be seriously injured and die just like uber drivers. They also are "independent" contractors. Despite those odds, some did leave and became well known outside of that tyrant's world and are now getting richer than ever before...Would any of the events above including the new billionare deciding they could compete by picking up those independent minded wrestlers ever have happened if they were employees all along?
3)Portrayal of evil corps and the downtrodden who are forced to serve them as stereotypical "underclass" victims. If you are in Redmond soon and you take an Uber don't be surprised if you are being driven around by a PM who is getting out of the house or trying to get an extra edge against the high cost of living there.
My personal feeling here is I do not care either way. What I care about is from the consumer standpoint that Uber is accountable. My primary dislike of Uber, Airbnb, Vroom or similar enterprises is that they all claim to be of one stripe when things are going well but when things go wrong the company claims "Oh that's not us it is this entity we represented as part of the process but who we disclaim any responsibility for". As others have pointed out all the major tech companies use contractors. I don't know of any that would get away with the "oh that's not really us" defense.
As for the voting, join the club. Like all communities online HNN is an often hypocritical cliquefest where the mob will have its way. But at least it's not r ;)
Replies on another thread by alleged Google employees appear to indicate they are learning on the fly that doing support matters and costs money.
There are a lot of comments from people wanting free things. You may get those things for a while but it won't last. Free only works for so long in anything no matter how hard that is for some people to figure out across all aspects of life.
On the other hand if you're drawing diagrams of things you haven't personally made sure could work well together at even a trivial POC level then I am not a fan because that is precisely why some devs hate anyone who is called an Architect.
Will skip reading comments because I know some k8 fan boy or some other type of religious enthusiast will insist all of it is solved.
A2)Probably don't have to worry about it.
Any programmer of less experience who continues to argue with the "Architect" after they have met the challenge of proving their ideas can be done should also have to get a new job.
Many less senior programmers are better at the every day idioms of a given language or tools used in daily programming. Many senior people have to do more than just code. But most senior people who can still practice if called upon are much better problem solvers in part because they have already failed so many times and each new batch of programmers keep re-inventing the same mistakes.
Many things have become popular that were originally written like ass by someone who was better at making something people found useful than they were at data structures or thinking in big O.
A lot of genius language design people are nearly useless when the whole messy world of shit like network, filesystems and interacting with things not their language is involved.
Programmers being human also are not some consistent machines that constantly maintain some level of productivity regardless of what is going on in their personal life or their interests waxing or waning in a given problem space.
The people whose code has changed the world are maybe a handful or two. So, astounding developers much better than most do exist. But even they are not some multiple of every coder for every problem.
Nevermind, it's time to stop even thinking about programmers alleging truisms about programming and go get my MSNBC|FOX fix so I can get the necessary stimulus to knee jerk.
The US has a legal system not a justice system. I suspect that is true of many countries. Once you are caught up in it then you will realize it isn't personal and it has nothing to do with the truth or justice. We have incentivized "winning" of trials and have blindly gone along with the idea that having both sides behave horribly ensures fairness because well..What else can you do?
Might be time to step back and think if a bunch of premises are working out. Does giving some wannabe tyrant a lifetime job really result in good decision making because they are "free" of political influence? Is it cool to allow for things like fine print and to allow lawyers to be immunized from many bad behaviors because lawyers keep writing rules in such a way to keep lawyers employed? Is it really cool that a prosecutor can lock someone up for 20 years who was innocent but that the recourse is some lawsuit where everyone pays for the settlement and they get to basically get away with "oops"? Is it cool a defense lawyer can "win" a case where they know their client is a child molesting cannibal?
Philosophy and big questions may seem quaint and are often the target of people who claim they are some form of scientist but for some reason my non scientist self and many average people seem to be able to suspect that the legal system is a bit fucked up, paying someone to publish papers on the implications of tyrannosaurus rex having created a vegan matriarchy might also be fucked up and if you let those things near each other some really bad stuff happens unless you get serious about fixing the core of problems both of them have.
I'm a big empathy fan but defending the growth of state power on grounds of being shorted in the lottery of life pretty much always leads to more abuse and only temporary mitigation of suffering. Not to mention the fans of big government tend to be like alleged anti-violence people. They always seem to be fine with big government and using violence as long as it serves what they think is right. Then those same people either freak out on dirty cops and prosecutors or look the other way if those dirty cops and prosecutors are targeting people they hate.
We are so far from a free market state that any invocation of libertarian bent rings kind of hollow. The game is rigged and the safety net exists in one form or another in most places that would allow one the opportunity to post on a website instead looking after their basic survival. The issue now is not the lottery the issue now is trying to fix all the broken things that were allegedly created to help alleviate the effects of the lottery.
So, feel free to invoke 'principles' while banging on those more inclined to want liberty than safety but as someone who worked their way up from a worse start than just having a single mom the last thing I trust are people inclined to social engineering "looking out for me".
I am old enough to have been on XP teams and to have become a certified scrum master in its first few years. It's gotten out of hand. Being agile and blasting to an MVP is fine for people who think Netflix or sending dick picks is mission critical but with IOT and AI scenarios emerging that allow all the little software napoleans to fuck up something serious or inadvertently create a universal spying machine it might be time to put the breaks on for at least a class of problems.
No industry hates old people as much as tech and that industry has people all over it like an idiot on another thread who clearly had no idea who Brian Kernighan was when they wrote their post. Young programmers have always been arrogant idiots. I was one myself. But it astounds me that many programmers today don't even know a ton of stuff that would make their job easier since it is shit that is already figured out or is shit the science says can't be figured out.
I hate people that wallow in history as much as the next person with an ounce of inclination to independent thought but for fucks sake learn some basics before applying that code golf to 20,000 cores because that shit costs money you free food demanding little jack ass.
As for building what the customers need or want? The more time I spend around programmers the less inclined I am to want them deciding anything for anyone in terms of features.
If you're blessed enough to be great at programming and picking things people actually want or need then you'll be too rich soon to bother with stuff like being told to help a team fix their shit anyways.
On the other hand, if the argument is a boss should not expect someone called Architect or senior engineer etc. to be able to troubleshoot based on experience I have a problem with that.
If someone can't be air dropped and they have a title that is intended by the business as code for a senior level software person who can think of how to build systems and can also build them themselves, then I am not sure what they bring to the table.
Wisdom? Determination? Scars? You can claim to earn or learn some of those.
Don't get me wrong, I am not aligned with the hnn society of smart idiots who think Harrison Bergeron was a how-to manual. The genetic dice roll can be cruel. I don't look like Clooney nor am I built like The Rock. But them's the breaks. The only thing worse than that unfairness is the unfairness well meaning and smart idiots would create trying to rectify the inequities.
Still, I am empathetic enough to be amused by rantings of the intelligent regarding economic options when they seem to have not seriously considered some other people are less intelligent and may really have less options.
In the abstract I will side with those who declare no one is trapped. But there is a continuum.
You pretty much have to get me to Vichy France or San Francisco levels of disgusting society before I advocate a waitress with a 6th grade education just decides that supporting the evils of Cheesecake Factory is beyond the pale and worth joining the resistance, the kid's be damned.
Seems to me some of these smarty pants could create a utopia for the lesser folks who feel trapped by mortgage's, child support and other meaningless pursuits instead of wasting their horse power on blogs.
I am consistently amazed by the sanctimonious incoherence many people in this candy ass industry feel comfortable espousing.
This industry is where people with no work experience much less life experience are hired at 3-5 times the average American family's salary. This industry is where people who have the OP's 14 years of experience in that level of company can amass wealth that exceeds that of generations of families who didn't have people in the lineage that wrote buggy software for a living. The author worked 14 years in a company that provides the decadence of shit like free food and free dry cleaning. Free food is fucking mind blowing to some people.
Not only that, but the company he's worked for has ALWAYS been about helping others manipulate people. It has always been about taking some of the smartest people the industry has and pointing them at human manipulation because well they are lowly consumer apes and that's OK. Yet, like many on hnn he considers himself worthy of wielding the categorical imperative as if he was a fluffy bunny Thanos because he has joined the club that hates the orange man and supports the approved protected classes while defending the rights of street defecation. I guess 14 years enabling mind fuck INC. has all been cool because he goes to church and is a moral tourist.
The mind numbingly vast majority of techs especially at the major cloud provider level have never ever lived in an environment where physical harm or fatal consequences were the punishment for talking the wrong kind of shit to the wrong person or even being in the wrong area. Their pansy ass, horseshit view of the world is fueled by an existence where they have lived like kings in comparison to many. Yet in their proclamations they are comfortable blithely advocating policies that kill whole industries or leave young soldiers at a disadvantage because well they're good people and some hick who had to go into the military or works on a rig and feeds his family just isn't as noble as someone confused about their gender who would like others to be taxed so they could change it free of charge. Twice.
You can pretty much hear them thinking "Those kinds of people on those rigs vote Republican anyways so fuck them. Pretty sure that's what they said at church right before I took off to get my 6 dollar coffee on the way to spend a couple of hours with the the homeless."
Glad you quit your job. Also glad, you are just another deranged tech who thinks they are on the side of right and justice while being oblivious to their own shoddy and harmful positions instead of someone of consequence who does something like defend our country, farm or roof houses.
Customer facing teams are also very different in focus and there are dangers to thinking one is prioritizing a feature vs. fixing an issue depending on the team they are talking to.
Some prioritization is of course normal but it is fluid and not simple unless you're just ready to hand off the business and not improve your platform.
