Opening up third party access to read all user data on the device, agentic control over all installed apps, etc. is opening the platform a tiny bit?

I wish it weren't necessary, but BetterDisplay has been helpful with these types of issues in my experience. https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay

The world would be missing something if we didn't have creative geniuses off in the corner making art for art's sake, accessible for the masses to keep at home.

Thinking about the circumstances of the time compared to today helped me to find relevance. We’re using GNU/Linux differently now than he was when that message was written. Symbolically, the ability to ”operate” the machine is provisional, and able to be taken away at any point by the true owner.
Re:MKBHDs for Everything on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @01:04AM (#40060629)
The guy was specifically talking about the video's headline, which was written to be clickbait like everything else on YouTube because that's how MKBHD pays his bills.
I genuinely wonder whether such a thing is possible without a single centralized political party and severely limited avenues to disagree with the plan.
They opened up access to EU users in December[0] and presumably started running install banners inside Instagram in that region alongside the launch. How much of the growth is from EU vs. rest of world?

I wonder how they should comply with the law in your eyes. What is a fair way for Apple to recoup the investment they make into their developer programs?
Trashing streaming services publicly is an implicit demand for them to do better.
Re:Toyota Adopts the North American Charging Standard on Thursday October 19, 2023 @11:15PM (#37951998)
It's definitely odd to me that a lot of the superchargers I visit on trips have zero services nearby.

iPhone's keyboard is a joy to use. Virtual joysticks and gyro controls are frustrating and painful.
Re:Official Mastodon server of the Dutch government on Wednesday July 12, 2023 @11:56AM (#36696531)
That’s the hard part about standards. I’m not sure how a standard can become one without people taking a chance on it.

Case in point: You actually do not need to create another account on Threads - it interoperates with this standard. Citizens will be able to follow information from the Dutch government on that platform.

Re:Official Mastodon server of the Dutch government on Wednesday July 12, 2023 @11:27AM (#36695971)
The advantage is that the information can be aggregated along with posts from other sources rather than having to visit many different websites individually. It's easier to consume, the same reason why RSS was useful.
I'm confused about this and related comments (it doesn't support Unreal, etc.)

There is probably something that I'm missing here. What is technically preventing Unreal/OpenXR/etc. apps from running on Vision Pro?

I’m probably missing something, but is there a reason why passkeys can’t entirely replace password+2FA and create a much simpler experience for everyone?
Yeah whenever I see "Privacy" segments in their marketing, it's hard for me to avoid thinking of it as "Here's how our anti-competitive moat works."
Re:OpenAI's plans according to sama on Wednesday May 31, 2023 @06:44PM (#36145431)
Maybe some of those things that are currently separate projects will eventually converge with a multimodal model.
I'd be completely fine with QR code menus if the menu websites weren't horrifically bad 90% of the time. Doesn't take more than 10 seconds to scan the code.
Re:Delimiters won’t save you from prompt injection on Saturday May 13, 2023 @01:10AM (#35925775)
They didn’t promise that “system” fixes the problem. It is a prerequisite to a possible solution for the problem. Now that the model knows which messages are “system” and “user”, it can be trained to treat them differently.
Re:Google “We Have No Moat, and Neither Does OpenAI” on Thursday May 04, 2023 @01:24PM (#35819012)
Assuming you're talking about the free ChatGPT product, it's important to consider the value of the training data that users are giving them.

Beyond that, they are making a lot of money from their enterprise offerings (API products, custom partnerships, etc.) with more to come soon, like ChatGPT for Business.

It's already happening. For the past ~3 years, an Apple store in Portland has been either boarded up or protected by a metal security fence to protect from vandalism and looting. They took it down last month, but evidently expect crime to continue: the expensive glass windows were replaced with cheap, ugly plastic panels that are easy to replace when they are inevitably broken into. https://www.oregonlive.com/silicon-forest/2023/03/apple-fina...
You can retrieve information on demand based on what the user is asking, like this: https://github.com/openai/chatgpt-retrieval-plugin
I've found that if you push through the trust issue with the expectation that it's not a final answer, it's just getting you closer to it a lot more quickly, then that ends up being very helpful in a lot of cases.
I was hoping a sleuth on HN or Twitter would have found it already (assuming OpenAI upstreamed the fix already).
Re:Introducing ChatGPT and Whisper APIs on Wednesday March 01, 2023 @03:23PM (#34987794)
This is explained in the OpenAI docs. There is a chat completion API and you pass in the prior messages from both the user and the assistant.
Re:The New Bing with ChatGPT on Tuesday February 07, 2023 @02:59PM (#34698545)
I think it's a continuation of what's been happening for years on Google search result pages:

- At the top of the page, everyone is familiar with the massive infoboxes that summarize the query and often push to other Google properties rather than the source.

- The actual web results in the middle of the page are often trash due to high ad load, SEO blog spam, etc. And of course you are only seeing the output of a filtered/censored ranking system.

- They're even taking over the bottom of the page too, at least on mobile. If I search for "San Francisco", after scrolling a bit I get into an infinite scroll of other suggested queries, like "hotels in San Francisco".

Google made the decision to heavily bias and editorialize their search results a long time ago, but it's turned into a frankenstein because to some extent it still masquerades as what it used to be. The chat interface might be a good way to cut through that charade and get to the point more directly.

It basically stops working once a project gets too large.
