From my observations it appears to be incredibly corrosive socially.

The scale of the damage it is doing in western society at the moment will need books, not chapters, dedicated to it in the future.

Have you been living in a cave for the past 10 years?

>Millions is a low value in terms of wealth and makes only really sense to mention it if your previous wealth was significant different.

Only really true in America and well see how that holds up as we progress with America's collapse.

I'm going to guess by not declaring a change of residency and keeping everything flowing through their American / Canadian SSN + bank etc.

Utterly clueless.

Re:Margaret Mitchell fired from Google on Saturday February 20, 2021 @03:02AM (#26202460)
Google, by virtue of its sheer influence in the industry, is primarily responsible for the activist-driven grief that has shat itself all over the tech industry in recent years.

So fuck them. Watching the toxic crops they've planted and tended to go for their own creator's throats is nothing short of delightful.

>I don't agree that this is the fault of tech at all.

>The real culprit I believe, has been the incredible hysteria of the legacy media as it joined the social media spaces, and started their race to the bottom for clickbait and outrage porn. Covering inane tweets, and blowing them up to pretend that crackpot points-of-view have more weight and are more common than they truly are. Gotcha gonzo-journalism, that prides "getting them" (whichever group that may be) over informing, and in the process dehumanising large swathes of people for clicks.

Everything you've outlined above is entirely the result of technology and the incentive structures that have been pursued in its "advancement".

What’s the incentive for companies to pay European devs more?

Re:What Is Social Cooling? on Tuesday January 12, 2021 @11:56PM (#25758344)
My only hope is that the rest of the Western world takes note from observing the dissolution and atomization of US society at the hands of identity politics and makes a firm choice to not let their own societies traverse the same path.

I, sadly, do not see how America comes out of this together, embracing a "live and let live" type attitude, in a world where identity politics does not continue to dominate the narrative, when a large bulk of the mainstream has stoked, embraced and celebrated a loosely constructed contextually and historically ignorant hierarchy and narrative of the "oppressed" and of the "oppressors". Where one half of the populace believes the nation itself to be fundamentally good , worthwhile or indeed "the best", and the other believes it to be rotten to the core not just now but since its very beginning. Where one half believes that the 2020 election was genuinely stolen from them by socialists and communists, and the other genuinely believes they've just defeated something in line with Adolf Hitler, who himself stole the 2016 election thanks to Russians with a couple million of FB ad spend.

I hope to be wrong.

> Can we just go ten years back where everything was more spontaneous and candid?

No. That life is sadly dead and gone, the damage of politics / identity politics as most dominant identity, bias enforcing algorithms and creepy behavioural psychology manipulation as “user experience” has not just corrupted the internet permanently but likely how we see and deal with one another online also.

Who could have foreseen that choosing to contribute to some of the most, if not the most, intentionally polarizing and toxic technology the world has ever seen may have consequences?

Obviously physical violence in reaction to non-physical action(s) is completely uncalled for. People shouldn’t be afraid to work for Google, Facebook and Twitter for fear of physical retribution. They should be utterly ashamed and embarrassed to though.

All of this is surely going to end well.

Is there any economical incentive for China to produce higher quality goods?

I'm sure they're shaking in their boots at the thought.

What are you doing about it?

>They always ask for more surveillance funding/powers, yet they never have a good answer when it comes to what they do when they're granted such powers.

Their remit is to protect the state, not you. Occupy movements / class consciousness pose a real threat to the state and therefore is of far higher concern than some lunatics bombing some plebs doing a marathon.

>If they want more, they'll have to fix the system for the little people so that the little people can be comfortable, not impoverished, and productive.

I hope not. It'll be so much more fun if they push things past the point of no return.

>Though, aside, for this reason I think legislation is one of the only solutions short of waiting for a cultural awakening that probably won't ever come.

I don't think it'll ever come because we've allowed ourselves to create an atmosphere where there's entities doing their utmost to ensure it never happens via the tolerance of behaviour economics and psychology being used in marketing, the tolerance of big corporate lobbyists, the corruption of science via corporate backed "studies" whose results align with the initial desires, etc.

The only consolation being that our unmitigated greed will likely destroy us long before we have the chance to infest the stars with it, and that life will go on without us.

Are we back to pretending the UN is an entity of reverence again?
Re:Head of Remote Work on Sunday December 27, 2020 @02:18PM (#25553475)
Post-COVID I see three scenarios:

- Companies go back to the office, but with more of an onsite/remote split and better support for it

- Companies that reject remote and return to the office fully

- A whole host of companies that go fully remote, or start as a fully remote

Given the experience we've all had during COVID, employees will thus be now better able to self-select to work for companies within the above scenarios.

Therefore, this position feels pretty transient to me intuitively, although given Gitlab spearheaded its creation maybe my intuition is completely off?

Regardless, I personally loathe the expansion of HR in the modern org in terms of their jurisdiction, visibility and power and this position seems to be just another tentacle on the beast. As with everything HR related, it also feels like once it exists it won't not exist.

Re:Head of Remote Work on Sunday December 27, 2020 @02:05PM (#25553381)
>I don't understand how this can be the top comment.

Know the audience. Think of the most unnecessarily difficult people to work with in a given tech workplace - they make up about 75% of the users here. The other 25% are broken into aspiring entrepreneurs, reasonable ICs and Reddit migrants who are still trying to find their feet.

>Do away with most management? And then what? 30,000 employees all steer the ship in the right direction by sheer "individual accountability and focus on results"? Well that gave me a good laugh.

Same crowd will balk at any suggestion around deriving accountability quantitatively. These rugged individualist coder wolves just need to be unleashed to let their genius flow, man.

>Culture is overrated? That's literally the only thing that prevents work from becoming a sterile factory.

See above. Why would the most unnecessarily difficult people to work with want a workplace that promotes working with others?
