Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:24PM (#50264413)
The price put upon "I don't have to go figure out what a good monitor is and what are good input devices".

For some people is pretty much priceless.

Also there's no cables to connect the monitor and the device making it all one thing you can pickup and move around, which people value as well. Also the difference between (900+$monitor+$mouse+$keyb) and $1700 is really not a lot of money for a lot of people, especially those people considering an Apple devices.

The vibe and name remind me of Jeff! https://jeff.ceo/

Seems like an extremely risky thing to do. Luckily they can keep maintaining it and improving it if their business is truly dependent on it.
Do you honestly think writing code is the purpose of life? Do you think meaningless drudgery is the meaning of life?
no one cares
And yet its had no effect. If anything this group has accelerated their activities, as evinced by this FBI hack.
They've been on an streak for over 6 years now, check out their wikipedia page.
US keeps arresting and charging people from this group for well over 6 years now, and this happens in 2026. They don't sound very scared.
And the "border" in this case includes a 100 mile circle around any international airport

You would be aghast to spend any time in tech these days. I would wager more than 20% of the people in this field right now are wearing devices which record everything they say in every conversation and ship it directly to a transcription LLM and into some other tools. Go to SV and I bet this number jumps to nearer to 30-40%

People do NOT want smaller phones, that should be abundantly obvious.

How do you detect the watermarks and how do you remove them. Code please.
Re:The AI Billboards Are Killing SF on Friday August 07, 2026 @12:41PM (#49213057)
I remember when I was young and every billboard in SF was some stupid web 2.0 startup, or SaaS, or Crypto Shitcoins. Now we're plagued with AI billboards and the world is ending!

There's a 2bit quant on HF already at ~1TB

Just let it manage itself, what could go wrong! :)

Re:Track your workout from the iPhone Lock Screen on Thursday July 16, 2026 @11:21AM (#48935811)
This is something I really have wanted from a lifting app.

One thing I don't think is here, but would really love: be able to describe a workout I did today with my trainer so I can replicate it perfectly in 3 days at the gym by myself:

"bench press, drop sets, with a 30 second hold before each set, starting at 100lb and decreasing 10lb each set, reps starting at 20 and dropping to 16, 14, 12, and 10 for a total of 5 sets" either thru voice (preferably) or text and have the app build the workout.

Manually building these things really sucks in most apps, even if there's a good UI. My trainer has about 8 variations and combinations of these we might do on any particular day and they're always evolving and changing and I don't really have time to capture it in the moment.

Re:No Spanish Reading Crisis? on Tuesday July 14, 2026 @11:28AM (#48908339)
People tend to use the terms "Reading" and "Literate" to be interchangable but they really aren't. I'm sure there are plenty of kids (and adults) who "literally" can't read words and rely heavily on TTS and perhaps STT to interact with the world via their devices.

However the larger and probably more dire issue is of literacy which means you're not only able to read the words but fully understand them and make connections between ideas and be able to communicate what you read to other people. That's the idea that really matters because it unlocks an entire universe of additional learning and a deeper understanding of the world.

The lack of actual literacy is, in my opinion, why America is in such a pickle because there are probably generations of people at this point who fundamentally do not understand what is going on around them (and certainly don't understand any half-way complicated topic or situation) and just float around on "vibes" and their emotions (which they likely also do not understand fully).

Does this include electricity required to produce the ice?

Why do you think all the rich people (and by extension the oligarchy running this country) are pushing Crypto?

Stripe might buy back the shares at a good price. They might be able to sell on secondary markets.
The ATC told them to enter the runway because they were confused or distracted due t overwork.

No one here or anywhere is saying automation would solve or be able to handle everything that human operators handle, that's an argument you invented that no one is making.

People are saying automation could handle a significant portion of the routine things allowing humans to handle the more complex/finicky issues.

Even if automation could handle 10% of the most common situations it would be a huge boon. In reality its probably closer to 50%.

Never seen any of this even once.
That's objectively false. I use safari all day everyday and have never experience any of that stuff.
What's wrong with Tahoe? I've been using it for quite a while and I haven't noticed anything odd?

Most of these people left because the Ars readership is insanely toxic as evidenced in this thread.
Re:Nano Banana 2: Google's latest AI image generation model on Thursday February 26, 2026 @01:58PM (#47170448)
I lived plenty of my life prior to the cell phone era (born early 80s).

I do not have the same feeling you seem to have about photos from this era. Some are fine, sure, but looking back on them, most of them are very bad photos and most do not capture anything close to what I'd call an emotional feeling.

I would go so far as to say 99% of the photos from my life prior to 2000s really suck, like really badly. Some also degrade visually and lose their impact over time.

Since you couldn't be sure what you caught more than often what is captured is poorly framed, blurry, weird, poorly timed, and often left out a lot of stuff that was actually going on. You also had to try and be super selective because each photograph had a real tangible cost.

Conversely, I find being able to take many photos in quick succession and across a long period of time at a very high clarity allows me to select a photo that most closely matches my feeling in those moments at that event.

Even more so with AI photos. Although many models cannot do this well, their abilities get better each day and can allow you to compose or edit/modify a photo in such a way that matches your internal feelings rather than the blandness of what is essentially a random photo of random stuff that may or may not convey an emotion anywhere near to what I was feeling or remember feeling in that moment.

Re:AI makes you boring on Thursday February 19, 2026 @01:49PM (#47077491)
Yet another boring, repetitive, unhelpful article about why AI is bad. Did the 385th iteration of this need to be written by yet another person? Why did this person think it was novel or relevant to write? Did they think it espouses some kind of unique point of view?
