Re:Thomas Edison's Concrete Houses in Montclair, New Jersey on Monday October 30, 2023 @10:49AM (#38070116)
The concrete houses reminded me of the George Eastman (founder of Eastman Kodak camera company) [estate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Eastman_Museum) which is now a museum in Rochester.

Built in 1905 of reinforced concrete.

Worth a visit.

Are the Navy pilots actual eye witnesses to seeing these crafts or are they eye witnesses to whatever is electronically displayed to their HUDS/Helmets/lenses?

It seems every video I've come across, it was all electronic so it has me thinking just a software error.

I think it’s more regional.

I know in my city visitors find it weird when local strangers just start including them in conversations. I know I’d frequent places a line and be fine striking up conversations with whoever was also there.

But me visiting other cities and trying the same, I’d be met with wired looks and asked why I’m talking to them.

NYTimes is reporting that this is actually the fifth balloon to cross into our airspace. First four were seemingly ignored, three times under the Trump administration and once before during Biden’s.

My first as well.

With a family move to a new city during summer break, purchased an '85 and spent the entirety of the last summer month just programming things in it.

Haven't stopped programing since.

Re:Tesla Full Self-Driving data looks awful on Wednesday December 14, 2022 @03:46PM (#33990275)
Tesla was found to be deactivating the autopilot mode at the second before a crash [0]. I think it's for a dubious reason so that Tesla could declare none of their cars were in autopilot/FSD mode when involved in a crash.

"The agency’s analysis of these sixteen subject first responder and road maintenance vehicle crashes indicated that Forward Collision Warnings (FCW) activated in the majority of incidents immediately prior to impact and that subsequent Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) intervened in approximately half of the collisions. On average in these crashes, Autopilot aborted vehicle control less than one second prior to the first impact."

Re:The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns on Friday November 18, 2022 @10:42AM (#33656330)
The article mentioned the company sharing birthdates which is why I used it myself.

I'm just failing to understand why China using whatever data TikTok has on me to understand my tastes and personality is a national security issue for the United States.

The fear seems to be that China could tweak a US citizen's feed, based on their profiling, to inject Chinese propaganda?

Re:The FBI alleges TikTok poses national security concerns on Friday November 18, 2022 @09:48AM (#33655489)
So I'm an American who uses TikTok for entertainment.

I don't think it's utterly ridiculous to allow TikTok to continue. Even hearing these threats that China is possibly surveilling me - what do they get that other social media apps like Instagram get from me? From the FBI it sounds like the national security threat is that China may use it alter my feed to influence me or take over the control of my Apple phone? Has Apple warned users that TikTok will take control of their phone?

As far as I'm concerned, I'm just watching short 60 second videos and could not care less if China has my birthdate.

Re:F.lux, but for Your House on Monday November 07, 2022 @02:39PM (#33511194)
I use Home Depot's Wiz lightbulbs for this around my home. $10 a full-color bulb or so and each one individually connects to the home's wifi so there's no need for a hub or anything. The app works fine on my iPhone.
To add a sarcastic comment, the US could just increase its military spending to outspend the interest payment then to solve the issue.
Brought back a fond memory. Growing up my family's computer was a Mac with system 6 and Jurassic Park was released. I'd make some park control user interfaces in the paint program - trying to replicate the Mac menu and button designs - then play some Jurassic Park trying to save the park.

Italics.

Editor settings can assign italic characters, if the font has them, to keywords or word type (like comments).

Re:My macOS keyboard shortcuts on Friday April 01, 2022 @03:42PM (#30882462)
Okay, I liked your idea of the window moving left and right and I tried to parse what you said and how to set it up as I haven't done shortcuts like this before.

In every app's menu bar (so like Safari or Chrome), there is the Window menu item. If you open that then press and hold the Option key on the keyboard, you'll see some alternative commands - two of them being:

Move Window to Left Side of Screen
Move Window to Right Side of Screen
You'll need those exact command names when you open Apple -> System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts tab. Then under App Shortcuts you can add some new shortcuts, where you can assign the Ctrl+Option+Left to the command title "Move Window to Left Side of Screen"

Once added, as you've said - once they are bound they will appear in the Window menu now as well.

Re:Cities should not pay for new stadiums on Tuesday March 15, 2022 @10:30AM (#30685783)
The article cites Buffalo as paying for the stadium, but isn't the public portion ($1B) coming from New York State and not the city itself?

The stadium isn't even located in the city of Buffalo but well outside of it.

I can't find the excerpt, but I read "The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History" by John M. Barry during this pandemic. It was an okay read if you're looking for something to pass the time.

There was a passage that suggested that virus evolutions happens all the time which sometimes gives us a super severe strain. But usually these super sever strains don't evolve into even more severe strains - generally they evolve back towards the "baseline" severity and the severe strain burns itself out.

From that, I had hope that the Delta variant of COVID was one of these outlier super severe strains and that all subsequent evolutions would fall back but it's not looking like that is the case when omicron was found.

Re:The Party Math Trick on Tuesday November 30, 2021 @04:30PM (#29397732)
Back in grade school when playing with a calculator, I came across this weird pattern when adding various combinations of 3 digit numbers on the number pad.

I wonder if there is something similar at foot as with this trick.

As follows, taking a calculator and the number grid, so a series of additions of a row added to the reverse of that row added to the second row, etc etc.

So following a horizontal pattern: 123 + 321 + 456 + 654 + 789 + 987 = 3,330

Now, let's see the sum when we use a vertical pattern: 147 + 741 + 258 + 852 + 369 + 963 = 3,330

Then, you can also do the diagonals:

Diagonally NW to SE: 748 + 847 + 159 + 951 + 263 + 362 = 3,330

Second Diagonal NW to SE: 784 + 487 + 159 + 951 + 623 + 326 = 3,330

Diagonally SW to NE: 142 + 241 + 753 + 357 + 869 + 968 = 3,330

Second Diagonally SW to NE: 421 + 124 + 753 + 357 + 689 + 986 = 3,330

Just a silly occurrence that they all sum to the same value 3,330.

When I look at the SPR weekly levels at https://www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/hist/LeafHandler.ashx?n=PET&s=W... it doesn't show an increase of 77M barrels. During President Trump's term it fell from 695,118,000 (Jan 22 2016) barrels to 638,085,000 barrels (Jan 15th 2021)

In March of 2020 it went from 634,967,000 to a peak of 656,147,000 in July of 2020, to then fall back.

Unless I did my math incorrectly, where can we find the information about the 77M?

There is something about Crypto.com's TV advertising spots that just don't sit well with me.

I feel they purposely give off a large FOMO with their platitudes that feel really manipulative. Like you should risk more than you can.

I've been trying to find a DisplayLink dock that can output video via USB-C or Thunderbolt. Everybody's shared solutions always involve HDMI connections, never USB-C.

I have two Thunderbolt/USB-C monitors that I was hoping to daisy chain with one wire from my Mac. Alas it's not possible.

My hope is power into a dock. Thunderbolt from dock to laptop to power laptop. Thunderbolt/USB-C from dock into first monitor. Second Thunderbolt/USB-C from dock using the DisplayLink tech to second monitor.

M1 laptops can only support one external display at 6k and 60Hz. The other video goes to the laptop's own display. Even if you use the laptop closed in clamshell mode you can't connect or daisy chain to more than one external display.

The mini can support two external displays. One via thunderbolt at that same 6k and 60Hz and the other a 4k at 60Hz through the HDMI port.

Re:Onboarding with an M1 on Saturday April 17, 2021 @10:07PM (#26849200)
I've seen these too, but the LG 4k monitors that Apple sells on their website, and suggests as a display purchase along with the M1, have only Thunderbolt and USB-c IO. All these example setups use monitors with HDMI, etc.
Re:Onboarding with an M1 on Saturday April 17, 2021 @10:06PM (#26849195)
If I could describe why I've been an Apple laptop user since their Powerbook days, it's because I didn't want to worry about fiddly computer setups and stuff - just purchasing a machine that works and an afternoon to get my environment up and running (for dev).

In all my previous experiences, purchasing into newly released products has always been a step forward in every measurement. I would say dongles have been the only pain points when moving to new generations.

This is the first product that took a step back in an important way and I wasn't expecting it. And it doubly hurt me as Apple's website store suggested these LG 4k monitors to go along with my new M1 and their store showcased the awesome thunderbolt daisy chain and driver support out of the box.

So while DisplayLink technologies do allow for an inferior multi-display setup - I haven't found one yet to drive dual LG 4k monitors that Apple sells.

Re:Onboarding with an M1 on Saturday April 17, 2021 @07:37AM (#26843479)
As mentioned in the epilogue regarding single monitors, I feel that Apple was a little too silent regarding that limitation.

It also caught me off guard especially as I purchased the LG 4K thunderbolt/usb-c monitors from the Apple website with the hope of connecting everything via daisy chain.

I haven’t yet definitively found a DisplayLink hub that can output its video via thunderbolt and/or USB-C so whenever I see articles about M1’s and developer setups I happily check in to see if anybody has found a setup.

Re:Is that ship still stuck? on Thursday March 25, 2021 @07:40PM (#26587077)
I’m thinking a complex series of pulleys and chains set up and attached to the Great Pyramids of Giza and then like a tooth tied to a string and door - attach the chains to some of Elon’s rockets and pull that ship loose.
Re:20-Minute Neighborhoods on Thursday March 25, 2021 @04:37PM (#26585070)
Buffalo is a 20 minute city, I believe if you include it in the list of major US cities it has the shortest commute.

It's thought that all the infrastructure planning that happened back when the city was growing in population in the 1950's and 60's is helping keep commute times down now that the population is much lower. Basically infrastructure planned for many millions of people but has a population of 800k.

Like morse code trying to tell us something.
Instead of at the consumer level, I can see this being viable at a commercial level. Robot vacuums and floor cleaners that clean office and retail building surfaces controlled by those who are not physically able to do so.
Re:The Kruskal Count Card Trick on Friday May 04, 2018 @11:55AM (#16995540)
I also did two passes through the game and did not end up on the trap card. Worried that I was not following the rules correctly I came to the comments to check.

I followed the rules just as you illustrated.

Re:End of the conference era? on Thursday January 18, 2018 @10:25AM (#16177742)
It’s those destinations that have the draw and therefore infrastructure (accessible direct-flight airports, conference locations, cheap hotels) that make conference prices viable.
