Re:There's no reason for software to be slow anymore on Saturday August 22, 2026 @05:13PM (#49403937)
I had this problem on Fedora and my RTX 3090. Never got to the bottom of it.
Re:Show HN: A little physical breakout clone on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @03:36AM (#49179715)
I selected tilt controls and it doesn’t respond to any motion. The “fullscreen” button doesn’t do anything resulting in a tiny game window.

It’s a shame because I love breakout!

Re:Ask HN: Can Apple Ever Be Disrputed? on Friday July 31, 2026 @04:39AM (#49120544)
It’s not even just consumer mindset. Look into any deep dive into their custom tech, it’s insane the engineering dominance they have.

The M series was and still is generations ahead of x86. There is no competition from anyone else.

Their AirPods routinely score the best on noise cancellation performance, battery etc.

The iPad (even though arguably “out of place” platform) is the only tablet device anyone actually uses.

MacBook hardware pre-ram price issues was incredible. My wife has a NEO and I was floored at how much it was like my m4.

They did some pretty good marketing at convincing us they don’t sell our data to third parties. I assume this is still the case.

I’m a long term PC enthusiast, I’m old enough to have played games on dos. I daily drove Linux on gaming laptops and MacBook clones. I have a custom machine running Bazzite for my gaming needs.

In the last couple of years I made serious attempts to switch to Linux from windows for my main development machine but it was pretty unreliable experience across all the distros I tried (fedora was the most stable), so I bit the bullet and bought a Mac mini, the only complaint has been related to thunderbolt and it’s unreliable hubs.

It replaced an i9-14900k and did it with almost no change in performance and it doesn’t sound like I’ve got a leaf blower in my office.

Arguably the platform I’m least happy with is the iPhone. It was at is best 5 years ago and just gets buggier every release.

It’s impossible to not sound like an Apple shill but this has been my experience for 35 years of computing.

The LLMs love your site!
Re:Writing a Debugger from Scratch on Friday July 24, 2026 @05:39PM (#49041923)
Numega SoftIce! Now thats a name I've not heard in a a long time. I think I had 2 Windows98 machines and a RS232 cable for connecting them.
Re:Qwen3.8 is launching and going open-weight soon on Sunday July 19, 2026 @03:24PM (#48970968)
Why do you think competing companies poach engineers from each other?
Nothing will ever come close to WinForms.
Re:The art and engineering of Sega CD Silpheed on Monday July 13, 2026 @03:05PM (#48897248)
If you've never seen Overdrive 2 by Titan (a demo scene group), it's unbelievable what the MegaDrive can do stock.

I'm reasonably familiar with the hardware, I've written some games from scratch and I still have absolutely no idea how they did most of it.

Re:Benchmarking 15 "E-Waste" GPUs with Modern Workloads on Monday July 13, 2026 @02:51PM (#48897075)
How the hell did you fit 6 P4s in a mATX case?
Re:Why Write Code in 2026 on Monday July 13, 2026 @07:33AM (#48891093)
"Why write code in 2026"..

Because AI generated code is STILL complete ass. Even Fable, even whatever custom Pi/opencode leet code harness you have, the output is awful, and, if you cannot distinguish the quality of your code vs the AI's, I've got some bad news for you.

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026) on Monday July 13, 2026 @07:23AM (#48891001)
A Sega Dreamcast game engine (with editor and tooling) for a Wipeout inspired racing game. No AI.
I often wonder what would happen if Google just refused to pay, or just kept it stuck in legal purgatory as that would be cheaper than paying the fine.
Re:Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model on Saturday June 27, 2026 @04:47AM (#48696394)
I always think of Furbies because of that geocities (memories!) site.
Re:Previewing GPT‑5.6 Sol: a next-generation model on Saturday June 27, 2026 @04:43AM (#48696368)
I asked it for a block of C++ code and it hit 14,189 tok/s. I assume it cached someone else's session?

Re:Chuwi Minibook X: the netbook we deserve on Monday June 01, 2026 @03:41AM (#48353738)
I feel like this is another “Framework 12 vs Neo” type of deal.

I can get a used MacBook Air M1 for £250 which beats the Minibook in every regard and it can run Linux.

How could you possibly know all the most "technical and best engineers?". Wait.. are you a codex instance?
Re:It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12 on Friday May 29, 2026 @05:31PM (#48329564)
I know someone with a modern Zenbook and it sounds like a jet engine at all times, battery life is awful too.
Re:It's hard to justify buying a Framework 12 on Friday May 29, 2026 @05:29PM (#48329545)
- "Let’s not forget that Apple advertises paid subscriptions in notifications and settings pane alerts when you first buy the computer."

I've literally never seen an advert outside of a 3rd party app or website on any Apple device I've owned (many).

Re:Native all the way, until you need text on Sunday May 17, 2026 @08:39AM (#48168393)
This is where QT/JUCE can help. Although you are limited to c++.
Does it though? Just release the a standalone server once the game is done making money.
Re:Rewrite Bun in Rust has been merged on Friday May 15, 2026 @03:26AM (#48145578)
This is the thing. I do use LLMs (mostly Anthropic).

It just does not generate good useable code. I have to review every single change to a higher degree than I would my own code because it likes to slip in hidden nasties. I have to rewrite at least 50% of what it generates.

That being said, I know devs who swear that they don’t even write code anymore. Like this rust port. I can’t even fathom blindly merging something his massive.

I wonder if insurance would refuse to pay out in the event of an accident due to this modification?
If any authority wants your data, a password isn't whats stopping them.
I’m using an AMD cpu and an Nvidia gpu and it worked out of the box.
I use Bazzite for all my gaming (Returnal at the minute) and it works unbelievably well. I don’t tinker with any of the proton version. I just press play.

I recently completed Stellar Blade with zero issues.

I don’t even shutdown the machine, I just hit the power to sleep it. Instantly resumes where I left off.

Incredible to see just how far it’s come.

I use it for non collectible stuff. I’m always buying weird interesting things. Old computer stuff at least once a month.

I buy most of my physical games from eBay too

Re:I'm going back to writing code by hand on Monday May 11, 2026 @05:45AM (#48092925)
This struck me as odd too. 7 months? It wouldn’t take that long to write it in a new language.

Another thing I don’t see mentioned is code quality.

Vibe-coded code bases are an excellent example of why LLMs aren’t very good at writing code. It will often correct its own mistakes only to make them again immediately after and Inconsistent pattern use.

Recently Claude has been making some “interesting” code style choices, not inline with the code base it’s currently supposed to be working on.

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026) on Sunday May 10, 2026 @06:07PM (#48088628)
I’m developing a Gizmondo emulator. It’s an old gaming handheld.
