Transistors are an implementation of QM. Without transistors…
It also benefits from capital appreciation.

As for breaking even, the security is highly liquid and can be sold at any time to recover one’s capital.

>You might be surprised how much of modern tech was developed by racists and other bad apples

William Shockley, co-inventor of the transistor. See section “Views on Race and Eugenics”.

Ok, and how about no more cap gains exclusion on selling primary residence and no more writing off mortgage interest (USA)?

Seatbelts weren’t a thing in the first cars. People weren’t thinking long-term about how fast these things might one day go.

Tim Hortons in Canada is being probed for using Radar Labs in their mobile app.

"Tim Hortons' parent company, Toronto-based Restaurant Brands partners with Radar Labs, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company , which provides location-based data analytics, and helps the Tims app to identify when users are near competing fast-food restaurants and coffee shops."

He’s great. I used his Money (for managing money values as cents in the db), Liquid and DelayedJob in a bunch of projects.

Now I run my own Shopify store, selling my software.

No small threat; plenty of room for those, according to Daniel Ellsberg’s book ”The Doomsday Machine”.

No kidding. I’m a 48 year old programmer. If today were 1939, y2k was the end of ww1, when I was a 28 year old programmer.

> one of the most unstable times in history

I can think of far more unstable times in history than the times we’re living in now, recent examples being WW1 & 2, nuclear threat during the Cold War.

> so no clue if they actually use location services

The iOS app doesn’t request Location permission.

Re:Leak reveals $2T of possibly corrupt US financial activity on Thursday September 24, 2020 @11:56AM (#24579871)
I wire-transfer tens-of-thousands of USD / month from my bank to my wealth-management company for perfectly valid reasons (e-commerce revenue), primarily to exchange to CAD (far better rate than bank) for funding payroll and/or purchase Investments.

With each transfer, my investment company has me fill-out / sign a form declaring Source of Funds.

If the gov’t finds anything suspicious, there’s an airtight paper-trail for all these transactions.

Nothing to see here.

And if you miss the small handful of up days while dormant in cash, your portfolio lags.
I remember that comment. I’ve quoted that story a number of times.

I’m 48 and I rent a nice place at $2100/month. All my loot is invested in balanced 60/40. 0 debt.

Absolutely, if you’ve won the house lottery, cash out now, invest and rent a nice place.

But the “olds” are using it.

I’m 48 with childhood story similar to the author. I do like TikTok for some reason.
Re:30-year U.S. bond yields less than S&P dividend rate on Saturday March 07, 2020 @11:16AM (#22512295)
It doesn’t make sense to pay off the mortgage when money is essentially free, where interest rate is lower than inflation.

I believe it does make sense to invest what you can now in a balanced and diversified 60/40 portfolio. The current market turmoil is mere noise in the long term.

The fundamentals are still solid. Companies continue to make profits and hire people.

The invention of the transistor was stunted by ~5 years because of ww2, when Shockley, Bardeen and Brattain were redirected to war projects, such as bomb sights, magnetic detection of submarines and radar.

While I stewed after the dotcom crash during early 2000s, I had a short 2-year gig working as a headend tech for a small cable company.

It’s not about demand, it’s about climbing poles and rolling bucket-truck crews to replace filters and other expensive equipment on a massive scale.

The top comment in the link there is spot-on. https://superuser.com/a/1519918

I was involved with the “digital switchover”, moving the traditional analog channels over to the digital QAM channels, potentially freeing those now duplicated analog channels for upload channels. Maybe more upload is technically possible but the work on the poles is going to be expensive.

[edit] oops, pasted duplicate.

Re:Flutter: UI platform designed for ambient computing on Wednesday December 11, 2019 @07:33PM (#21768291)
Over 5 years ago, I created a background-geolocation plugin for Cordova. I later ported it to React Native and now flutter. It’s not every plugin that could be monetized. Geolocation, especially in the terminated state, is a special case.

https://github.com/transistorsoft/flutter_background_geoloca...

Background geolocation for iOS / Android is all I do.

Re:Flutter: UI platform designed for ambient computing on Wednesday December 11, 2019 @07:29PM (#21768263)
Build an app. There are many things in the plugin api that you don’t interact with in the app. The plugin api is the bridge between the front-end and native iOS / Android apis.

I’m a professional plugin developer. I make plugins for Cordova, React Native and Flutter. Flutter is my favorite.

You should do a hello world at least.

I see what you did there ;)

My wife knits. Yes, it’s like coding: it has a language, there are algorithms, instruction-sets and tools. And sometimes bugs you have to back-step to correct.
And what do you think those plugins implementing the native sensors or CLLocationManager / FusedLocationProviderClient is written with? Obj-c/Swift and Java/Kotlin.
