Not true for all places. There are places where the callee can be charged for the costs of a call and the owner of the building has to pay the firefighters (well, his mandatory government-issued insurance will pay). It's moving bills from one stack to another, but it's not free as in beer.

Re:Apple introduces the new 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:33PM (#50267386)
Not better - but Apple in early days was easy: Choose Air if you don't nedd much. Choose MacBook if you need a little but more and choose Pro if you need max power. That's one of the reasons why I bought an Apple years ago.

Compare that with the regilar lineup of other manufacturers: Cryptic model names which are uncomparable and models that are so similar that they could be equivalent.

So, no, 1 is not better but I don't care (as customer) about variety.

Which would be sad, because then quite a nice project is going to die.

Ok, that's expensive. Here it is like $60/month, but that also includes broadband internet.
I think the best move is now to go back to watching TV: more broad access to channels, also has ads which are (to some degree) skippable. I do not get why streaming had to go full way to being worse than TV.

Will they use it to decide how to name Office, ehm Office 365, ehm Microsoft 365, ehm Microsoft 365 Copilot next?

Switzerland: 10 million people, around 600'000 with permit B (limited to 5 years), over a million with permit C (persistent living permit, but no citizen, available after 5 years of B).

I wonder how you only reach $74 in 6 hour runtime. I would have guessed this runtime goes into the hundreds of dollars.

Or I'm realizing that I'm overpaying my tokens...

Pretty good is pretty bad for a tool I use most of my day.
I use it daily, but I'm also the AI consumer that is looking for something like a hammer and a saw (it's clear what their job are and they're doing their job fine). I'm absolutelty not looking for the next-gen-stuff, so I avoid Codex/Claude/...

Junie is boring, and that's perfect (for me).

Sometimes we bring down whole services with "just" config (looking at you, DNS).

Re:The Four Horsemen of Agentic Coding on Saturday October 03, 2026 @12:43AM (#49941406)
> No, everything that can be automated SHOULD be automated,

I disagree, because then the "human" part of our days are over. If everything is automated, I don't need to interact with any human at all anymore - but the random small chat in the Bakery every couple of days is very nice. Ther will also be no chance to break out of the loop. Try to get a human involved if the automated system thinks "naa, not today", that's going to be difficult because companies prove they will fire the human as fast as possible because the task seemingly is fully automated.

> I imagine something similar happened to tailors who became factory sweatshop workers.

I'm really wondering where this goes. I'm not sure we are going to the "tailors", but maybe I'm also biased.

Tailoring completly got lost - there are basically none* in western europe (* if you don't count the couple of shops that adjust your clothes a little - try to find clothes Made in Europe). So are we going out-of-business and our code is coming from (name a country)?

Or are we going to exist, but it's all Fortune 500 and smaller shops have no chance of establishing themselves anymore?

Or is it going to be totally different and small shops will flourish and the Fortune 500 will loose part of the market?

It may be, but it's IMHO also not worth writing a blog post about it. what's Next coming up? How I broke into a house by trying every door in New York?

If most of the work is only possible due to unlimited resources, it's not really a great invention, and it probably would have been cheaper to hire a (human) mole.

Re:Dropbox's Jan 1st 2027 terms of service on Sunday September 20, 2026 @03:15AM (#49773291)
I did a comparison with an LLM of my choice and there was no meaningful difference (or nothing I would consider HN-worthy).
Re:I don't like passkeys on Saturday September 19, 2026 @12:15PM (#49767757)
Untrustworthy... yes.

I get more annoyed by the timeout it adds. Logging in 10 years ago? A thing of seconds.

Logging in today? Either msgic links through mail (delivered to you within the next 30min thanks to graylisting or spam filters) or a login flow with requires 5 dialogs and 5 confirmation of "no, just log me in".

Re:Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md on Saturday September 19, 2026 @02:19AM (#49763885)
We have a CLAUDE.md file whose only content is "please read .agents/agents.md"
Or just developer/mansgement slop? I don't understand why every app needs to be updated every second day (at least it feels like that).

The easiest way to count how many apps you have is to turn off automated updates and wait a week. The number of updates equals the number of apps.

Re:Anecdotally, Programmers Dislike "Reduce" on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @03:10PM (#49731522)

I had similar trouble, but I know call the "accumulator" just "previous" which makes it more logical in my head:

.reduce( (previous, current) => previous+current, 0 );

> So, first up: why? Why is everything still using SOAP?

That‘s the question? And not why every single invoice has to go through the government?

I would call that developers loss of focus.

But aren‘t they currently sitting on like a margin of over 80%? So I assume their revenue will fall, because people are not going to like that in the long-term.

Re:I advertise malicious software on Google Ads on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:41AM (#49625602)
I tried to remove a not-anoymore-existing company I had a business profile before from Google Maps. I was close to giving up, it's such a complicated process that is fully intransparent.

Kudos for you for trying 4 times.

So if you hire a plumber as a plumbing company you expect him to have plumbing-material available and to do plumbing in his free-time?

There are people that do like not to do work in their free time.

P.S.: With AdBlockers enabled I cannot navigate on your site at all on Safari mobile. Seems like your navigation uses to much JS to provide a link.

Isn't Invoke-WebRequest the one that makes it really hard to have an exit code != 0 if your request fails?
Functionality isn't everything. A human teller has the (more or less) same functionality as online banking, but I do love me some online banking.

I also like the weather icons being 4K and having some smooth anmiations.

Not to say that it's gone worse (it has IMHO) but comparing 25 years ago to know doesn't help much. Times were different back then. That's like comparing 1900 travel to today.
