thought that's a small, german thing
The Second Law of Thermodynamics just means the conversion can't be a hundred percent efficient. Indeed, I didn't think of that as a problem.
Why can't the heat be converted to electricity?
Re:Quake's Lighting Model: Surface Caching (1996) on Monday August 08, 2016 @03:32AM (#12246022)
i used a p4 until this year and upgraded only to save power.

Maybe she's just flatterin. Or she thinks that working less and being comfortable with it is clever and she has to admire the skill this takes, which she struggles with to adjust right.

Maybe the author is right, though.

right, writing's about the useful order of the facts.
Re:The solution to (nearly) everything: working less on Friday July 29, 2016 @04:25PM (#12189711)
what's full time, 10 h/week, 40? where did this magic number come from and why is it declining in the last decades, while unemployment rises? surely not because we became less able to work.
Re:Google Profits Surge on Strong Ad Demand on Thursday July 28, 2016 @05:53PM (#12183484)
That appetite is proportional to the careless feeding of stats and the affinity to fall for the ads.
Re:Special projects on Thursday July 28, 2016 @03:26PM (#12182525)
Out there are a lot of announcements of really existent research results, even popular ones.
Re:Inter-Procedural Optimization and Derefinement on Sunday July 17, 2016 @07:22PM (#12112399)
It would also be reasonable to remove the declaration as the variable is "unused".
Re:The Magic of “Untranslatable” Words on Sunday July 17, 2016 @07:19PM (#12112384)
There's no such thing as the "Untranslatable" Word if universal grammar is for actual. At least up to turing completenes, as any language should suffice to describe a turing machine. Yeah, I don't know about "Magic".

Re:How Berlin can become Europe’s No. 1 tech hub on Saturday July 09, 2016 @01:29PM (#12062363)
... again! :)

I'd prefer a german page. And a less clickbaity page.

Like javascript prototypes? Ah, yes.

> ... with no need for special mechanisms.

Is object the type then or a single class?

> A single model—dividing types into prototypes and traits—supports sharing of behavior and extending or replacing representations. A natural extension, dynamic object inheritance, can model behavioral modes. Object inheritance can also be used to provide structured name spaces for well-known objects.

>Classless languages can even express “class-based” encapsulation. These stylized uses of object inheritance become instantly recognizable idioms, and extend the repertory of organizing principles to cover a wider range of programs

Re:Servo Nightly Builds Available on Monday July 04, 2016 @08:17AM (#12030245)
you misunderstand if you think servo is scheduled for production and put peer pressure on the devs, but sure, firefox is great already, can only get better. Speaking of which, how are the memory requirements of servo, in relative terms, yet?
That's just anothet point to a short list. Sure, the list is longer, but the problem that the train derailed to begin with, that happens here, in europe, as well.
Re:Investing Returns on the S&P500 on Wednesday June 29, 2016 @03:55PM (#12004317)
Nothing has no values. Nil is nothing thoug, or what properties should it have?
Re:Investing Returns on the S&P500 on Wednesday June 29, 2016 @03:52PM (#12004283)
Hehe, depending on the setting in sci-fi stories, that doesn't play out well, politically, and a lot of spending goes to the military.
Re:Investing Returns on the S&P500 on Wednesday June 29, 2016 @03:24PM (#12004068)
With off shore holding accounts, do google et al count?
Re:Investing Returns on the S&P500 on Wednesday June 29, 2016 @03:22PM (#12004050)
all of them, that's still nil though.
Re:Visualize Algorithms based on Backpropagation on Wednesday June 29, 2016 @12:32PM (#12002753)
I was looking for a blogpost here that used similar, orange visualisation. The graphs seem to be an intuitively general application in geometry or analysis or whatever - I don't have the basics down; this should help.
Re:Common definitions in chip design and production on Wednesday June 29, 2016 @11:02AM (#12002029)
looking at parts and datasheets to build a smps (switch mode power supply) and trying to figure out the networks that are rather complex from my point of view, I was expecting a list of 200 famous ICs like the lm317 or ne555 and when that seemed implausible, becuase there aren't that many iconic ones, I thought of insights into cmos design, which this hardly adresses and where 200 items would be a short list.
Re:“Should you encrypt or compress first?” on Tuesday June 28, 2016 @04:32PM (#11997308)
I'm sorry, that article is far too long to tell me what you are trying to say. All I can gather is, I was wrong
Re:“Should you encrypt or compress first?” on Tuesday June 28, 2016 @04:15PM (#11997149)
wit truly random data, patterns should randomly appear.
Re:A new crop of hands-on universities on Saturday June 25, 2016 @09:47AM (#11976295)
>Ultimately the real value of a degree comes from the networking and signaling ability granted by it,

Absolutely not. The intrinsic value of studies is learned from the studied material, the knowledge. Sure, in relative terms, a research grant allows much deeper insights, and with it the prestige. A student that takes twice as long learns less relative to the time. But first order in the end, applicable knowledge is counting most. The certificates just prove that.

The communication is on a higher level, not in the first order sense of the words. Looks perfect for differential analysis and stochastic gradient descent, from what was said to what was ment. To have taught a bot some humor would be quiet the relieve for all the worried prophets of the AIpocolypse. The show scripts are planned for a high quality of the language, too.

Edit: my first expectation of the results was rather amusingly like yours

I have a theorie that submissions like this get to the frontpage because there are a lot of procrastinators who will always upvote to save for later reading, and they never actually read the articles so they keep saving them. I admit I do.
The public websites like vbb.de work well for me. I longed for a widget that always has the relevant timetable loaded, but then I don't wanna use GPS. A couple of favourites of relevant stations and routes would do the trick, too.

Re:Robotic Motion Planning in Real-Time on Tuesday June 21, 2016 @05:37AM (#11944582)
RNNs with their inexplicable output are impossible to justify in case something goes wrong. I'm not sure how secure their reliabilty is.
