Yup. Most criminals aren't masterminds. Fuck - most of them don't even take basic steps to cover their tracks. That includes people with big bank rolls occasionally.
Re:Ampere switching to in-house CPU designs on Thursday May 20, 2021 @09:33AM (#27220907)
That's a very neat story. I have always loved the idea of paying things forward - investing in things or people in which you yourself do not see the direct return. Thanks for sharing.
I got excited when I saw that fancy Microsoft Message Analyzer tool and wanted to try it out. Sadly it appears to be retired and removed by MSFT? Sad!
> Finally my old desktop was Intel and I am working on a lot of kernel/VM stuff. I don't want to switch architecture halfway. I did that before and it was painful.

What? Aside from edge-cases resulting from slightly divergent microcode implementations you should not be dealing with that. They are both x86-64. (Forgive me if I am missing an elephant in the room.)

Re:Bitsquatting Windows.com on Thursday March 04, 2021 @09:21AM (#26342783)
Agreed. I've seen people use assigned (RIR) but not announced (BGP) IP space for years in various ways. Squatting on 11/8 is common to the uneducated.
Re:Square acquires majority of Tidal in $297M deal on Thursday March 04, 2021 @09:09AM (#26342632)
That is human nature. No one cares until the crisis is knocking at the door.

Also I chuckle at the people who think Twitter and Tesla CEOs are "similar". They are not. Musk will still be here in 10 years rolling and controlling. I'm not so sure about Jack.

Interesting. Is the design something along the lines of "we want to keep people informed, but not be the sparking catalyst of mobs/witchhunts"?

I imagine if you have a valid reason and petition the court you can have the identity revealed?

Re:How prepared are we for the next giant solar flare? on Friday February 26, 2021 @04:33PM (#26280075)
You are correct, but sadly it won't happen in my opinion.

Why? MBAs have made way too much money advocating Just In Time (JIT) supply chains. To go back on that would make a fair number of "super smart" business people look short-sighted.

Speaking as an American living in America, I love GDPR.

Where I work [big-co], it is mandated that all of our services are GDPR-compliant, regardless of worldwide location.

The only people who hate GDPR are ad-industry parasites. To that I say: good riddance, and don't let starvation hurt too much on the way down.

Go back to reddit. RFCs are standards but real life requires acceptance of divergence from the exact letter of the law.

> I've always asked myself why spacecrafts "wasted" energy with carriers and never realized they make the signal easer to find.

Not exactly. You need a carrier wave / signal to modulate information onto. Can't modulate info onto nothing.

I watched the movie. It highlighted to me how over the top the effort was, when I previously did not appreciate how exotic and ridiculous the killing actually was. No wonder the Saudis did not like this movie.
Based fellow Eagle Scout spotted. Nice project. I planted shrubs and trees to prevent kids from chasing their escaping soccer balls into a busy street. At that park the previous year a 7 yo got creamed chasing his ball when it rolled away :(.
Re:Degoogling My Life on Monday January 18, 2021 @01:04PM (#25824585)
Regarding your AirPlay woes - have you checked the health (strength) and throughput of the wifi signal?

I have a lot of noisy stuff around my house so one thing I did was hardwire my AppleTV to be one less wifi device. That resolved all of my issues.

Additionally, I later ended up adding more Wifi APs to provide consistent throughput across the house. Previously I had "slow" zones. Not really dead zones, but annoyingly slow enough to force you to switch temporarily to 4G.

If you can't hardwire the device specifically, consider repositioning the WiFi AP closer, add/or add another AP if you are able to.

Hope this helps.

> Put those words into context around Alien 3. Young guy, big production and budget - of course he'll listen to everyone since, well.. insecurity!

Alien 3 was my first thought when I saw David Fincher in this headline. As flawed as that movie was, I still really enjoyed it. I can tell he legitimately tried to make it a legitimate "art" piece in his mind.

Your commentary about him being young+big money... is absolutely correct. Alien 3 could have had 3x the box market pop if there was a more collaborative process in my view.

Oh well, you live and you learn. Personal bias: I have enjoyed pretty much every one of David Fincher's movies.

> It got cold out is the more obvious explanation.

Right. Because if Trump won the cold would have curtailed rioting. Totally believable.

Re:Free-space optical links for space communication networks on Sunday December 27, 2020 @11:43AM (#25552191)
It is very exciting times. From a business model perspective what is interesting to me is thinking about how the LONDON<->NYC low latency demand (finance/tickers) will effectively offset the cost for Starlink to offer service in remote (rural) areas; they can do this due to the fact that they are in the same orbital coverage area.

Add on boats & airplanes - and now we really are in the 21st century (not trying to sound glib, I have wanted this for a long time).

:)

For what it is worth, the 2021 models finally seem to have CarPlay as a standard feature, along with a digital dash. Basically parity to what Audi has had for years.
Re:Autism and Invention Are Connected on Sunday December 20, 2020 @05:19PM (#25490095)
I think their intention was to capture the attention of their target audience. Their target audience typically thinks of autism as something that mostly hinders someone, rather than elevate / enable them.

That is exactly what happened. Also it is a very politically charged event to blast a Satellite out of orbit (resulting shards). You can blast airplanes out of "your" airspace all day long and tell everyone to pound sand.

"Actual leftist"? Nice No true Scotsman you got there.

Won't speak for your OP, but from my perspective most Social Justice Warriors embrace the term, even if it is thrown at them derisively from the other side. Same thing goes for being "Woke" -- it is a term and mindset that they embrace.
I had to zoom out to 80% to avoid have the left-hand menu from overlapping the text in the middle of the screen... and then I realized there was a collapse button at the bottom of the menu. Personally I think that's something the owner may want to consider tweaking the default on -- I was confused for a good 45 seconds.

Aside from that.... looks like a neat tool! Going to play with it on my win10 box.

Re:AI researcher Timnit Gebru resigns from Google on Friday December 04, 2020 @07:04PM (#25310050)
Whatever dude. You people are delusional. Stop bending over backwards to defend dumb ideas. To do so otherwise opens you up to mockery and ridicule of your otherwise substantive thoughts.
I have said it for years and I will say it again: The Republicans are absolutely stupid for missing this opportunity. They market themselves as the party of freedom. Bullshit.

To illustrate my contempt, I find it incredibly hypocritical that one can be a raging alcoholic, and own an arsenal of guns... but according to US federal law if you are an "unlawful" user of controlled substances, you are BARRED from gun ownership. That definition includes weed (schedule 1).

It really is asinine and not serving any purpose, except for the prison/law-enforcement industry.

We need to legalize this plant, and clear out all non-violent (possession-only) offenses from the record. It is time, in my opinion.

That's reasonable. I may have taken the initial text in the wrong context. Thanks for clarifying.

To expand on my prior comment of "Fuck x group", perhaps the tone of prior tweets by Timnit Gebru short-cut me mentally, namely this one: https://twitter.com/timnitGebru/status/1274809418475950080

> Even amidst of world wide protests people don’t hear our voices and try to learn from us, they assume they’re experts in everything. Let us lead her and you follow. Just listen. And learn from scholars like @ruha9 We even brought her to your house, your conference.

It strikes me as very unprofessional, and frankly I believe her anti-white bias shone through in that instance.

Racism is racism, even for "good" purposes.

In general I take these types of tropes to be cloaked (politically correct) way of saying "fuck x group".

You have reduced the scope of the argument. It is a question of efficiency, performance, and battery life. iPhone beats Android in all over those categories.

Of course iPhone and Android can do all the same tasks. One just does it a lot better efficiency and power wise.
