The two party system allows both sides to be mass victims of the other side at all times while also being the perpetrators.

Both sides are victims, fueled by endless excuses and reasons why the others are responsible. Dems and repubs both do it in various ways and because its mostly "vibes and energies" nobody is really wrong.

We're a vibes and hype culture that refuses to hold itself accountable. It isn't about fixing anything, its become about telling people they're not responsible. Its nobodies fault except the others, they did it.

Lots of olds are addicted to screens as well. Don't blame young folks and screens for something that's been around for decades.

Plenty of middle aged and older people are addicted to their screens and spend their lives glued to them.

Its also in Austin Texas which is pretty bad compared to a lot of the country.

So much traffic and nonsense to deal with in Texas. Its not worth living there, lol.

Yup. Its getting to the point where folks send me links and I just reply "I don't or can't use that website" and I move on. Nothing is lost, I feel.

Dude you're living in fantasy land. The US EV market is not good.
>USA is fast on track Great Britain track.

The US economy has basically been taken over by venture capital and they're milking all the assets and value that they can. It's all short term thinking. Hype economy so the rich can cash out.

The author Alastair Reynolds talks about this in his sci-fi opera books.
General estimates are that El Niño is 30-60% more intense due to human caused climate change and will only get more intense.

We are adding energy to the system via our excessive consumption. The ocean sucks up a massive amount of that energy. Warm water expands, among other things(hurricanes).

Not at the scale we do now. We have people eating beef and dairy 3x a day. Multiply that by 7 billion people. It isn't mathematically possible to support intense animal ag at that scale.

The amount of deforestation, water use, and pollution to scale like we are is not sustainable. This isn't a debate, the math simply does not work and there are mountains of evidence that contradict the "cattle are good for the environment" misinformation that society pushes.

Also, it is a gross myth that people all ate beef for thousands of years. The vast, vast majority of people ate beef only a few times a year, if at all in a year. Beef and those types of extremely resource intensive foods were generally reserved for the rich. That's why our modern society associates stuff like steak dinner with success. We eat it to celebrate. Beef was a very rare thing before massive industrialization of animal agriculture. Then it became an excess item that everyone could enjoy. You can find plenty of advertisements from the industrialization of ag that literally talk about how everyone can eat like kings and princes now. Beef for everyone!

The Colorado river drying up is largely in part to growing grass in arid environments to feed cattle. This is a problem.

Throughout history the vast, vast majority of people rarely ate beef and when they did it was much different than today. Generally old stuff in soups or whatnot. It was outside the budget of most people, if it was available at all in most of the world.

Nothing about our lives is historically comparible to our ancestors. This justification of "we've always eaten meat" is historically inaccurate and doesn't work nor does it make any sense.

This message was definitely not brought to you by the American Beef Council.

Lol wait can you elaborate? I think I know what you're saying and I want to be sure.
Society idolizes the rich and then acts surprise when our society enables them.

If you call people out for their hypocrisy they act like a doomer victim.

Stop eating meat if you actually care. Stop eating beef and dairy.

Massive amounts of land are destroyed and used for cattle. It's insane. Same with water, among other things.

Going veg cuts the numbers a crazy amount. 40-75% in terms of various metrics.

Our lives are built on excess consumption. We live lives of kings. We refuse to give up the largest sources of our damage when it isn't actually that hard. The excuses are so lame.

Why would anyone really benefit from just a few hours off their phones?

That's like saying not eating for a few hours makes up for eating 4000 calories at dinner.

I think you're maybe kind of right. We convince ourselves that politicians are idiots so we elect idiots.

I think the biggest change is we don't really hold them accountable anymore, at least in western democracies. Maybe we never really did.

I jump between search engines and DDG had a big improvement a few months ago. It's pretty useful.
Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:40PM (#50282493)
A couple of farms use more water than all residential in California.

The waste is NOT residential.

Re:Big Tech's thirst for water is sparking a global resistance on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @07:39PM (#50282487)
Most of the waste is because water rights are "use it or lose it" which encourages farmers(and ranchers who grow grass in arid environments to feed to cattle) to literally dump water on the ground so they can keep their water rights.
Primary care preventer?

Change doctors. If they don't listen and work with you tell them that. If you have valid reasons for requesting care and they try to convince you otherwise that isn't a good doctor.

Maybe ya just got a loose b-hole. Congrats.
Absolutely. Animals are subjected to disgusting conditions.

Feed lots for cattle are very disgusting places and have been linked to a variety of illness in humans who live downwind(specifically airborne illness). Chicken farms have similar problems.

Hell nah. They signed up for this. They knew exactly what their mission was. Stop defending people who were recruited to deport, and in many cases assault, innocent people.

Making lame excuses for "the good guys" reinforces that these people are doing good. They arent.

Your excuse will be used against you as soon as it's convenient to them.

I was gonna do a top level comment if nobody else mentioned it.

One thing that a LOT of pro basketball players do is visualize their movements before the game or whatnot. I'm sure athletes in all sports do this but I played bball for 30 years so that's my reference.

It works.

My guess is that it works on our ability to visualize/map where we are in space. It primes the hippocampus.

Lol bans don't work. Next up let's ban drugs.

Oh wait

>it automatically buys you a whole clique of people who will defend you online (for free!)

It's wild how just having the facade of wealth will get you a following in the US, for free.

Americans blindly idolize the wealthy. It's crazy. Truly a "not get millionaire" mindset for a lot of this country.

Hard disagree on the use of the word "normal".

It's what a decent person does. It's not what a "normal" person would do.

It's not yes-men. Power and money tend to convince people they are successful in every aspect of life. Our society emphatically endorses this viewpoint and even idolizes it. Look at our celebrity/businessman worship.

Then, since they are rich, anything they do is now acceptable. Anything they do is what a successful person would do. That becomes their viewpoint.

As much as Thiel is a POS, this author clearly only writes stuff like this and shouldn't be taken seriously.

There is way too much bias and need to generate controversy on part of the author.

Re:A Mathematician Reads the AI Future on Sunday October 25, 2026 @07:13PM (#50236984)
The issue is when humans no longer understand what AI is telling us and then there is no real way to verify what we think we know, or at least what AI says.

We can't audit what we don't know.

I'd wager 70% of people driving cars on US roads can't change a tire or change their oil.

I don't think "must" is correct here.

People will use AI all they want without understanding it. Same as the way most people go through life never understanding how basic things work. Our capitalist fixation enables it because ignorant consumers will buy whatever is put in front of them for the most part. Ignorance is profit in capitalism.

Folks don't want to understand. That's work. Why bother?

nah AI is fine when used as a complimentary tool. theres nothing wrong with automating some focus-intensive tasks that are mostly data entry

however, being unable to understand the code is an issue. creating code with an AI and then calling yourself a coder is a straight lie.
