Re:Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse on Thursday September 17, 2026 @06:44PM (#49747706)
The AI optimists are not that much more rational if you dig deep. Like any deep problem it is best to look at the facts not the hype and make up your own mind, outsourcing your thinking to other people never ends well.
Agree, but natural languages have ambiguity, the AI output should really include the assumptions and we seriously need to replace the word "prompt" with "conversation".
Re:Books of 2026 So Far on Thursday September 17, 2026 @05:16PM (#49746661)
I noticed an ex-colleagues sci-fi novels are all now free epub downloads here for anyone interested in sci-fi [rodyne.com] - halfway through his last book and really resonating so far.
Re:SpaceX IPO makes Elon Musk the first trillionaire on Friday June 12, 2026 @06:07AM (#48502098)
Good, I hope he spends it all on big fucking rockets, fast cars and space cities.. but I am sure the usual haters will find some reasons why we should all be angry..
Re:Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang on Wednesday June 03, 2026 @04:11PM (#48389323)
I think its obvious that a few billion neurons connected together are not conscious either.. Yet!
Why bother, if the bad actors was that good it could just make up the conversation using your voice and AI.
There has been a very big adoption of ENGLISH as a programming language in the last year or so, and, painful as it sounds, AI is already generating machine code without compilers, so let's see where we are in 2030.
Re:Let's Talk Space Toilets on Tuesday April 14, 2026 @03:35PM (#47770373)
If people are going to live in space for any period of time then they are going to need gravity so long term, yes.
Kindle gone, Kobo in. Bit more friction but I mostly just read library ebooks, free ebooks or the 500 ebooks books I took off my old kindle library a few years ago before I left.
Keep Calm, (Install KoReader) and Carry On.

Re:European AI. A playbook to own it. By Mistral on Sunday April 12, 2026 @08:37PM (#47746136)
Well said Comrade.
Shame, I only tried one once and it tasted quite nice, too expensive though. I guess I was in the minority.
Interesting looking at the data, that Norway generates 4x the electricity of NZ and they are roughly the same size and population I assume it exports most.
I'm going to try and give it a go on a zero2 I have lying around. Thanks, this is exactly what I come to hacker news for.

Respectfully, not everyone shares this view.
Re:Do Not Turn Child Protection into Internet Access Control on Saturday March 21, 2026 @09:49PM (#47473615)
If the government knew every single user on the internet's name, address, phone number and what they had for breakfast, it would not stop monsters like this, or even slow them down.

Humans know this too, that's why they prefix sentences with "I might be wrong, but.." or "I think.."
Re:Do 8051/8031 assembly like its 1984 on Friday December 12, 2025 @06:04PM (#46250128)
If you work in C and are happy with the standard libraries and don't want to go too deep into the hardware then most of the 8-bit micros are pretty similar. During COVID and the component shortages I had to do a bit of swapping around, luckily it was all GPIO, I2C and UART stuff so nothing too taxing.
Re:Rats Play Doom on Friday December 12, 2025 @05:49PM (#46250002)
It was tested on humans first

I miss Steve Jobs.
Rather than top scientists, the fund should target the young scientists, and or promoting companies that will employ these guys locally. Once lost to somewhere like the US, they rarely return. Me and a Lot of my friends who left in 97 and I still keep in touch with would never return without similar opportunities locally or the same seed funding we can get in US.

Re:How I accepted myself into Canada's largest AI hackathon on Thursday March 20, 2025 @05:44PM (#43429329)

Re:Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work on Tuesday November 26, 2024 @06:08PM (#42251132)
You may be right, but I would approach this with an open mind. Whether the trajectory of AI development remains an asymptote to human intelligence or surpasses it entirely, the increasing investment, involvement of diverse stakeholders, and growing stakes suggest that virtually every job role may face disruption or, at the very least, re-evaluation.
