Re:AI Did Not Break Education, It Revealed the Bug on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:44AM (#50286562)
Cool story, but I only got about 1/3 down the page before the AI-speak got too much and I gave up.
I have been using SearXNG as my main search engine for a while (not for AI stuff), and it's been great up until 2-3 months ago when it started being rate limite/captcha'd frequently.

My main reason for liking it is that it just gives me results without any ads or special summary/snippet/QA/etc... boxes.

I really wouldn't mind paying API pricing for search, I think it would end up at less than $10/year, but I haven't seen a good self-hosted search interface that allows plugging in api keys.

Re:What I Self-Host on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:55AM (#50114245)
For comparison, audiobookshelf idles at 89MB, emby at 178MB and navidrome at 29MB for me.

I think everyone has different definitions of what they consider heavy. I tend to think anything using over 30MB when idle is a bit much and anything over 300MB is something that really needs to earn it's spot.

GLM 5.2 was the first open model that I was happy to use as my main. It's a fantastic model. 5.3 cost a lot more per task, was slower and didn't get that much better results for me, so I tried 5.3 Flash for a bit, it was ok, but didn't feel as magical as 5.2 and I have now landed on DeepSeek 4.1 Flash as my main.

Who in their right mind would buy a case that’s past the statute of limitations?

Because the big labs are incredibly untrustworthy. Their leaders are publicly lying constantly.
Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Saturday September 12, 2026 @09:35PM (#49679044)
I don't think so.

If they actually believed in it, then they would stop pushing the frontier of capability and instead focus on alignment, safety, and better tools for controlling/debugging AI. Then they would actually share their findings and tools.

They don't do this. Instead of reducing the competitive pressure and helping the industry to build safer more aligned models they are doing the exact opposite.

Re:We Must Pace the Frontier on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:49PM (#49678786)
Because those are not the only examples.

There’s the case of the agent that hacked a gym when asked to book a class. That was just a normal user asking an agent to do a normal thing.

Re:Hugging Face is too important to fall into Nvidia's hands on Thursday September 03, 2026 @07:46PM (#49558675)
Isn’t there some Chinese site hosting all the models?
Re:ChatGPT Is Throwing 404 on Thursday September 03, 2026 @11:51AM (#49552038)
I hated that part of SO so much. Almost every time I got a SO result on google it was exactly the issue I had and without fail the question would be closed as a duplicate pointing to something that was different enough to be completely useless to me.
You can structure it so that it becomes accidental.

  1. Ensure security barriers are weak or honor based.
  2. Put individual researchers under a lot of pressure.
  3. If you get caught, blame the weak barriers, or the individual researcher.
Basically setup the incentive structure to incentivize researchers sticking their mittens in the private cookie jar while putting the cookie jar in a dark unmonitored/unsecured room with a sign on the door saying please don't enter.
Re:Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Tuesday September 01, 2026 @10:06PM (#49530897)
I never actually managed to use fable successfully even once on a pretty standard mvc/microservice app.. It would always find the endpoint permission checks and revert to opus 4.8.

I also had glm 5.3 flash fix an issue that opus 5 could not solve. glm took 4 times as long and a sub-agent tried to cheat (sleep; echo ...), but in the end it actually solved the issue. opus 5 never figured it out.

I think the safeguards might be cooking the anthropic models.

Re:GLM-5.3 is now open-weight on Friday August 28, 2026 @12:42PM (#49481127)
OpenCode Go is becoming less of a good deal by the month. I pretty much only use it for mimo 2.5 pro now, and everything else is either ollama or openrouter.
Re:GLM-5.3 is now open-weight on Friday August 28, 2026 @12:10PM (#49480611)
Seeing the price, I am probably just going to keep using GLM-5.2 until 5.3 gets cheaper.
Re:Small Models Have Arrived on Friday August 28, 2026 @01:46AM (#49474799)
The average game dev cycle is about 7 years these days, so expect to wait some more years before you see llms used much in games.
Re:Tell HN: GitHub Is Experiencing Degraded Performance on Monday August 17, 2026 @09:02PM (#49339835)
Because I don't have the money to start it.

I can't do it in my spare time, because then the company I work for will own it. And I can't just not be employed, because I have bills to pay.

I would love to run a small software company making products individuals can afford.

Re:Tell HN: GitHub Is Experiencing Degraded Performance on Monday August 17, 2026 @07:03PM (#49338892)
You can absolutely build a solution that works for that range, you just have to pick your tech stack for efficiency and not rapid development.

CI will be the tricky one, but I am pretty sure it can work if you keep the limits low, or price it based on usage.

The taxi experience was pretty great where I live and where I traveled. I guess we were experiencing different parts of the world.
I assume this is a case of I live in a part of the world where it was different to how it was where you live... Or we value different things.
That actually sounds pretty good to me.
A lot of tech recently has just made things worse.

Uber made the taxi experience way worse and less predictable.

Now, I can’t just walk out of a bar, get into a clean taxi and go home, I have to fiddle with an app, wait, wave trying to identify “my” ride, then hope it’s clean and safe. It’s a nightmare compared to what we had before.

Uber eats made food delivery significantly worse and more expensive.

It used to be that I could get food delivered for a known fixed price, it would arrive while still hot and it would be delivered to the door. Now, the price is obfuscated, there’s an extra fee for getting the food warm, sometimes the drinks are spilled into the bag, delivery is to the curb so I have to go outside to get it.

There’s a lot more that has been made worse by tech companies.

Re:Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @11:15PM (#49191994)
AI datacenters have very real negative effects on the communities they are located in like noise pollution and increased power prices. If you manage to defeat the water reason then people will just start using some other reason.

The Liquid Glass thing is a migraine trigger for my mum, and everyone I know with an iPhone has turned as much of it off as possible.

I love learning and can generally pickup new programming languages quickly.

Nintendo still sells games fully on the card that can be played offline.

(yes, they are allowing third party publishers to use key-cards, but their first party games are fully on the card)

Re:Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub on Thursday July 30, 2026 @06:46PM (#49116821)
There is real value in having all the messy commit history, especially now with AI, but you do need some kind of description on them that indicates what they are.

One use I have got from it is asking an agent to go through the git history and categories the mistakes/bugs, then turn the common ones into CI checks or AGENTS.md rules.

A well curated history just hides a lot of valuable info.

Re:Kill The Cookie Banner on Monday July 27, 2026 @12:32AM (#49065221)
The amount of sites that don’t persist rejecting feels very high, or it’s extremely painful when encountering. The cost of clicking reject is extreme if you have to do it on every page load as you navigate a site.
Re:So Reddit has decided that plain HTML is unsafe on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @08:58PM (#49015536)
I cancelled my Reddit subscription when they killed third party clients and haven't really used the site since.
I have been testing the various models, and I would not call Fable SOTA.

I can't actually get Fable to do anything. I only work on back-end code, and the moment Fable notices the jwt scope checks on the endpoints it's game over, it refuses to do anything because security is involved.

So for me, Fable is completely useless, the bar is very low, any llm that will actually attempt the task beats it every time.
