ex-Intel engineer here.

> Intel engineers, to put to bluntly: suck.

It hurts, but it is true.

> I took voluntary retirement and went to work for a smaller instrument maker. I’m way happier.

I was not so lucky. I would have loved the voluntary separation package. They did get around to doing straight large layoffs one year. My manager got laid off, I was not so lucky. I wanted the layoff package. I told him I'd happily trade places with him. He tried, but was denied. I ended up leaving anyway. Now, like you, working for a small company and much much happier.

Thank you. I have been a software dev a long time. More than 30 years. I did not know what this acronym stood for. I read the article and the article it linked to. Neither spent half a sentence explaining what the acronym means.

> Isn't it kind of the intersectionality of the right of self determination and the right to freely associate or the right to not freely associate?

Not entirely sure what you are saying here. Are you saying that people should have the right to keep outsiders out? If so, yeah. Totally. But, if you are rapidly losing population, and the young ones are refusing to make a lot more babies, then your options are rather limited.

> Everyone in SWE (who got into it for the love of writing code) is experiencing this.

I love writing code. But I also love solving problems. AI allows me to solve problems in different ways. And I am totally enjoying that as well. If someone got into this SWE only to code, yes, they may not love where things are today and appear to be going in the future.

> If Anthropic or OpenAI fails, the other wins the US market, no?

I am of the opinion that they both either succeed or they both fail. They are both losing money hand over fist and their model quality is pretty close to each other. There is not a whole lot that sets them apart.

You can self host an open-source solution if you do not trust 3rd parties. I put high value on convenience. TOTP solutions are not as convenient.

We are not debating Anthropic finances in this article.

> their culture, people, and society would rapidly shift

Why is it critically important to maintain a particular culture at a cost that is not sustainable? Why is allowing creation of a new culture, a mixture of multiple cultures, such a bad that thing? Particularly when a country is facing serious popular decline.

> the only really good solution is for the people within countries to actually start having a sustainable number of children again.

Never mind. I did not realize the solution was so simple. And I am surprised it did not occur to anybody else.

Re:How the Claude Code team does code review on Saturday October 17, 2026 @02:08AM (#50128424)
> But they should really stop commenting on software practices.

I disagree. Many of us have an emotional attachment to the way we do things and have difficulty letting go. Anthropic is showing a different way of doing things. And I am not going to judge them too harshly if the final output is good. I use Claude Code every day. And it is good. Ahead of the pack.

For sufficiently large codebases in large organization that is how it has been with humans, who come and go. In many respects, What Anthropic is doing is a massive upgrade from the status quo.

If LLMs were deterministic, like compilers, you would have a point.

Many of us have used Claude Code. And Codex too. These tools are essentially produced by bots. What is the quality like? I would say pretty good! Are there occasional issues in the tool itself? Yes. But more than average software produced by humans? No. Not at all. In fact I would say these tools are significantly better than average commercial software.

For chat, yes. But switch to code on the same page, and the picture changes. OpenAI takes the lead.

Re:Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:44AM (#50051817)
A password manager solves this problem. I use 1password but there are others, including open source solutions. Passkeys for me are by far the most convenient form of MFA-based authentication.
Re:Passkeys are a trap. Do not use them on Monday October 12, 2026 @01:42AM (#50051803)
> You can put your passkey in another safe.

This! Passkeys would have been tough for me to adopt without this ability. Now passkeys are significantly more convenient that any other MFA method.

> I "code" using Codex but I still use PHPStorm for checking diffs, database access, reviewing PRs, and the debugger. The value proposition has changed, not disappeared.

You are able to do this while the output is small enough. But, it will not stay small for long. Business expectations are rising fast. To stay competitive, you have to push large amounts of code/fixes/features. There is no way to manually review it or QA it. If your org is not there yet, it will eventually get there. Or it will die out. It is only a matter of time.

Re:Pi.dev: You Said No MCP on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:06PM (#49913599)
> One of the nice things about MCP is that the tools have descriptions that provide guidance to the LLM.

It is more of a curse than a blessing. MCP pollutes agent context even when you are not using it. Use a manually invoked skill instead if you don't want to be wasting tokens on every turn and bloating up agent context making it dumber in the process.

Re:Pi.dev: You Said No MCP on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @04:03PM (#49913559)
> MCP is a tool more for security than anything else.

The agent can get to the resource through the MCP server or using API key. I personally do not see the benefit MCP is providing here. Sure you can reduce the exposed surface at MCP layer, but I do that at the API layer. I don't need to add another layer here.

I can kinda understand if you do not have control of the API layer and/or you have to expose the API layer to the public Internet as well. Most of the time that is not the case for me.

The shimmering effect on the web page... it does not add to the experience. It subtracts. It is very distracting. I want to read what you wrote but keep getting distracted with things moving on the screen.

This may come as a surprise, but most phones can capture audio these days. Has your state made them illegal yet?

Re:Astra for Law on Thursday September 17, 2026 @07:25PM (#49748136)
> The need for actual lawyers will persist..

I agree. But, we will need a lot fewer of them. My small company called our lawyer a lot more before the advent of AI. Mostly to clarify a few things or review simpler contracts. Now, for simple things, we do not call them at all.

We all want super exciting jobs. But plenty have boring jobs like this. Between not having a job or having a boring job that pays well, the choice is obvious for many of us.

Yep. I faced the exact same issue. Too many times. And then just gave up.

I do not. Craigslist was completely anonymous. Marketplace a lot less so. This makes a massive difference.

I think that is not just limited to your area.

You are closer to a normie than most here I assume.

selfprivacy appears to be limited to a handful of services. e.g. It is not clear to me if I can host postgresql with it. i.e. It is not a general purpose container hosting product.
