I believe THC is still illegal in France. So it's mostly convenience - a certain base of weed users don't want to buy from dealers, or want the security of a well produced product - an illicitly produced THC vape can be dangerous [1][2].

CBD (particularly the terpene infused ones) fill that gap.

Edit: Should also mention there's a market for the effects of weed, without the 'high'.

For one, not to mix it with vinegar. Chlorine gas.

There was a spate of TikTok's recommending mixing them for cleaning purposes. To the horror of many.

Nearly all A&E (ER) rooms are managed by the NHS. Private ones are few and far between so it’s likely that a tourist with insurance will end up in a standard A&E - which can have very long wait times[1].

The NHS is also using private clinics to help clear backlogs - so even private insurance can lead to a long time to see a consultant.

Ambulances also do not have good response times.

Re:My New Sony NW-A55 Walkman on Monday July 04, 2022 @04:08AM (#31974663)
This is it for me, I used Apple Music for a few years and eventually I noticed that some of my playlists would have tracks missing - sometimes a listing would be ghosted, sometimes it would straight up vanish. I called time, brought a A50 and haven't looked back: https://chanc.ee/posts/20200830-abandon-stream.html

Granted my music tastes are esoteric but silently modifying my playlists felt grievous. Now I make sure that subscription money goes on supporting artists directly.

Re:Apple is not defending browser engine choice on Friday June 24, 2022 @08:22AM (#31860689)
I think this is the correct take. Most comments have been developers complaining that Safari doesn't do esoteric task _x_ rather than their clients can't achieve _y_

Apple make products for the top end of customers and they don't want to be dealing with complaints from Grandma about battery life because they hit a series of dark patterns and accidentally installed Chrome and made it default.

They've made it quite clear IMO that pwa style products would be better served by a native app.

It would be remiss not to mention Gold makes incredible jewellery. And jewellery - or the act of decorating ourselves to distinguish between one another - is an innate part of all our cultures.

An item can last longer than a lifetime, be passed down generations, melted and reformed into something new whilst being the "same" material. These are astonishing properties. Tulips and currency both rot, but at different rates.

The value of it is relative. In happy times, sure, not worth so much. Bartering to get yourself out of trouble...a Rolex tells the time and opens cell doors.

Gold is most certainly not a Tulip.

Agreed. I should have said ‘understand’.

My point being that applying rules learnt from hundreds of years of literary culture and printing do not 1:1 translate into digital.

Justified copy is as much about saving paper as it is about any formality/legibility. It really has no place in long form digital space where space is infinite.

Type designers like consistent and even rhythm between the ink and page. Rivers of white and large gaps between words give the ick.

Re:Design of This Website (2021) on Wednesday April 06, 2022 @06:37AM (#30930514)
This feels a little nitpicky to me - as a short hand for language and currency flags are commonplace. But I understand the thinking: "a language is nothing but a dialect with a flag"

The alternative is to use ISO (En, De, Es) in brackets before the text begins. i.e. [DE] Wie Studien verdreht werden

Take notes people!

Yourself and Gwern both need to learn how typography works before you declare yourselves arbiters of digital design.

On the plus side, your site is friendly in reader view.

• Never justify text in digital • Never right align long form in digital • Both need to learn balance between type size and line height

I think they are implying OP has used weed as a crutch and accidentally obscured a real condition.

A bit like using painkillers to avoid having knee surgery. A crutch, not a solution.

And your description of a hike fills me with dread and depression.

The differences between us is what makes life worth living.

Your outlook has you on a bad road mon ami.

Re:A Tumblr developer on the App Store approval process on Monday December 27, 2021 @12:52AM (#29699797)
Have designed and built apps for several high profile brands.

When you are big enough: apple occasionally send an engineer to share upcoming features, or nudge you in a direction they are keen to promote (2018 it was all AR) and at this point someone in C-Suite has a human contact to smooth out App Store BS.

So OP is correct in that it’s about size/apple seeing you as an asset and not a problem - they want those shiny family friendly releases for advertising material.

I used to think the App Store governance was a good idea. I no longer do.

4000 Princes, over 10k members of the royal family, Saudi.
For sure. With a healthy percentage of “I have £100k and I can only bring £10k before I need to declare tax and my employer canned the project and my visa. Allow the car”
People I know who’ve done it:

• getting a drink (alcohol) is a major pain. Either underground, or some elite venue where rules don’t apply - and the jeopardy that goes with that. Really want to spill wine on a Prince? And there are a lot of princes.

• feeling of underlying state level threat if you mess up

• some workers are treated as literal slaves openly

• getting your money home can be troublesome. Check out Dubai airport and abandoned super cars

People who tend to fare better are very career focused and can ignore the above. Also if you or your partner are into the five star life.

Re:I’m leaving London for NYC and taking my tech startup on Wednesday November 24, 2021 @07:50AM (#29329480)
There's a phrase in Europe. "Old money dies hard"

And money in Europe is old, and hard fought for. We still have rich people who's families made their fortune in the 11th Century.

Money in the US is new. And easily lost. The whole show is less than 250 years old. And that star is already on the wane.

Seems right.

Being huge means less inner ear dizziness, spinning small and fast is stressful on materials and makes humans sick. And docking would be a major POA.

If we are talking km diameter structures holding station in system, making it rotate isn’t going to be a drama.

Totally.

Who is going to pay a studio to develop the models, artwork and code required to have a ‘NFT skin’ in a game? Money is made by selling a skin multiple times to return effort.

And what if I want that skin in League, rather than GTA? The whole concept is a nonsense.

Influencers + shady finance have collided to *create a climate melting scam.

Re:Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards on Wednesday November 17, 2021 @08:20AM (#29252610)
My experience is they do indeed dig into your credit report and will approve/deny based on it. Not sure where your information to the contrary comes from?

Re:Amazon to stop accepting UK Visa credit cards on Wednesday November 17, 2021 @08:17AM (#29252579)
Can second this.

I had to get a credit card as mortgage got denied because my credit record didn't exist. Three months after the card, I got approved.

This is despite me earning an extravagant wage relative to my age for over a decade and never missing rent/utilities/council tax.

Bad system.

Re:macOS Monterey on Tuesday October 26, 2021 @05:48AM (#28998342)
I think on a Mac you'd struggle to get anything to pre-creative cloud to execute. Windows might be a different story?

If you are doing basic PS work - the open source alternatives are more than capable. Some non-adobe applications can open PSD files in a reasonably sane fashion.

Re:macOS Monterey on Tuesday October 26, 2021 @05:41AM (#28998294)
Gravit is new on me. I'm bias against web apps, but it's very cool a someone is playing in that space. Thanks!

It's beautiful to see that inside a decade we've gone from having a monoculture of Illustrator as the sole vector app (post freehand) to having multiple very capable competitors on all platforms.

Re:macOS Monterey on Tuesday October 26, 2021 @02:53AM (#28997210)
This is absolutely my experience of Adobe software too. Terribly engineered with priorities weighted for the board rather than users.

I’ve been a designer for +20 years and sans-Adobe for five, I absolutely recommend any young designers to avoid the Adobe workflow. You don’t need it.

Photoshop = Pixelmator (Kitura is also very good) Illustrator/Indesign = Affinity Designer

Highly precise vectors I draw in Glyphs/Fontlab.

I think it’s common knowledge that the Conservative party in the UK accepts large donations from Russian citizens[1] and that a section of the London property market is swimming in Russian money.[0]

It would be a stretch to say Johnson is kompramat, but there is certainly little appetite in that party to get actively hostile with Russia.

Somehow this lightweight was defence minister during Salisbury[2]

I agree with this on the whole. I’d add the form factor of a phone works against anything complex also.

No D-Pad/Joystick or hardware buttons really makes it difficult to design anything that will hit that fun + complex loop well. I can see play.date/steamdeck rolling in sales, as the portable market has a huge back-catalogue and is underserved.

Ultimately, our utilitarian glass slabs are only really good for lists. Lists within lists.

Might be worth noting that the Stonehenge complex is much larger than the henge itself, and isn’t particularly well researched yet:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durrington_Walls?wprov=sfti1

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge,_Avebury_and_Associ...

These also sit in a grander context of a European wide network of structures which we are only starting to grasp an understanding of.

Re:Windows 10 to be retired in 2025, as new OS unveils on Wednesday June 16, 2021 @11:50AM (#27529899)
The Guardian seem very lost: chasing the same slice of advertising pie as DM/Telegraph.

Channel 4 news are a small team with a heck of a punch - but there is not a lot of daily output.

Re:Windows 10 to be retired in 2025, as new OS unveils on Tuesday June 15, 2021 @01:09PM (#27518340)
Sadly this is true. The BBC is staffed with some truly incredible talent and some of the output is world class - however, the news sub-desks are more or less a few freelancers copy/pasting from Reuters/syndicated news at this point, and articles are certainly not thoroughly vetted.

Sheer inertia and brand cachet are carrying the BBC.

I'm not sure which outlet is entirely trustworthy in the UK currently.

Re:UK Rail services to come under unified state control on Thursday May 20, 2021 @08:09AM (#27220099)
Interesting that you see rail as a method to earn a wage.

I think it's positively evil for society that someone on minimum wage can't visit family or relations because they can't afford the fare.

That hurts everyone.
