Re:We fired our top talent. Best decision we ever made on Sunday October 15, 2017 @03:38AM (#15476269)
Writing maintainable, comprehensible code is truly the greatest challenge when creating software.

This is the definition of a gimmick. How is this superior to the various existing bluetooth-based solutions. Need to navigate without looking at a screen? Bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth connection to your car. Need to skip a track when listening to music? Bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth connection to.... Need to "handle a call"? Bluetooth head-

Particularly the question(s?) about list mutability. That is such a language specific property.

They also just released "Getting work done" for vim
And see here I was about to go and change all my passwords...
Re:Why do so many people hate US airports? (2015) on Thursday May 19, 2016 @07:33AM (#11729386)
The TSA is just an expensive, time consuming infringement on civil liberties.
I honestly like the sites that block adblock. I only use adblock because it is so easy and has such massive benefits, but I still feel guilty than I am not supporting content creators.
Re:Apple Stole My Music on Thursday May 05, 2016 @10:02AM (#11636160)
Stuff like this often makes me question using any DRM or platform-locked services, particularly steam. If valve decided to make a shady decision there is very little that its users could do about it.
Re:Technical Documentation Should Be a Graph on Monday April 25, 2016 @08:55PM (#11568645)
Isn't this already how much documentation is structured implicitly?

For example if you have a technical article which references some concept there will likely be a link to another article which explains that concept.

Thus each page already acts as a node connected to other nodes by the links within it. No need for a more formalized graph.

Ah yes the multitude of people who have lyft on one phone, and uber on another.

And then of course they have their twitter phone, and their facebook phone and...

I hate the pedantry that surrounds the word random. Language is defined by those who use it, and clearly by a random person he meant "someone that the parent do not know"

Which is a real concern, and probably is contributing to the downfall of this company, because their market consists entirely of well-off, but also really apathetic parents, which is a niche market if I have ever seen one.

I was expecting something much more subtle.

I guess the best course of action to prevent this would be to alias rm to a custom script, then parse the arguments to make sure the root directory is never recursively deleted, then calling rm from within your script.

The real question is why would someone reverse engineer the source code for no reason? You would have to know what you are looking for before you started.
Re:Atom text editor 1.7.0 released on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @07:16PM (#11493137)
Couldn't you just disconnect from the web until Atom was installed and metrics are disabled?
Re:What is BuzzFeed, really? on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @07:12PM (#11493116)
There will always be an audience for clickbait. There must be other factors at play.
Re:What is BuzzFeed, really? on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @07:08PM (#11493100)
An experiment? Hardly. At least certainly not any more.

They use data to deliver their cancerous content, just in the same way coke uses AB flavor testing to determine what the most addictive coke formula is.

Calling them "scientists" performing "experiments" seems far too dignified.

I mean tons of programmers make things for free just because. There is tons of software out there made by people who will never earn a cent off it.
After dicking around with the API for a while I found that that you can highlight/dim tabs using chrome.tabs.highlight running in a background script of an extension. Maybe I'll spend a little while tomorrow making a more complete version.
Well he commented that it was made with chromium, which I think probably sorts out the three issues that I mentioned.

I would install it, but I am on my windows partition.

Serious props to you for making a web browser. That is legitimately impressive.

However I feel like most people won't be willing to sacrifice the feature support, stability and security that a larger browser can provide for a potentially better experience.

If this was made by a single person you should really do a write up about the development process. I think many people would also be interested in that.

Re:Bye – Why I'm leaving Medium on Wednesday April 13, 2016 @07:32AM (#11487279)
I mean medium no worse than any other blogging platform. Who cares if there is crap content on there? The internet is a sea of crap. You just use your brain when reading to see if something sounds like bullshit, and take everything you read with a grain of salt, just like you would anywhere on the internet.

It's not like many people actually browse medium.com, we all just get linked there from HN and reddit, which could happen on any platform. Any crap is really the fault of a the community linking to it.

And in my honest opinion, I haven't really seen that many genuinely awful posts to medium. Perhaps some of you could link to some of the terrible posts this guy is referencing?

Re:The TSA Randomizer App Cost $336k on Monday April 11, 2016 @08:46PM (#11476383)
But that isn't manipulable by someone standing in line, so it is effectively random. You can't determine exactly when the tsa person will press the button.
Re:Executable code snippets in Bing on Friday April 08, 2016 @03:18AM (#11453091)
Wow. Finally an actually decent bing feature. I hope this spurs google to improve their support for non alphanumeric characters.
Re:Malloc envy on Monday April 04, 2016 @09:03PM (#11427043)
Why is this the case?
Re:The TSA Randomizer App Cost $336k on Sunday April 03, 2016 @07:47PM (#11418444)
Fair enough. I imagine that the paperwork and app verification is where most of the cost was generated.

Sometimes bureaucratic inefficiency just really gets under my skin.

Re:The TSA Randomizer App Cost $336k on Sunday April 03, 2016 @07:42PM (#11418427)
Nah because the whole idea is that the system needs to be unpredictable.
Re:The TSA Randomizer App Cost $336k on Sunday April 03, 2016 @07:36PM (#11418392)
Yeah clearly this ui http://elliott.org/wp-content/uploads/IMG_6317.jpg required 10 days to design.

Why would this require more than a few days? Simple UI, then just generate a secure random number and draw an arrow. Bam. Give me 200k.

I mean the largest expense would almost certainly be third-party pen testing and QA. And why would it take a technical writer 5 days to document this? It has 1 function.

Re:People with names that break computers on Saturday March 26, 2016 @07:24AM (#11365265)
This is just terrible programming. Everything should get escaped and quoted before interacting with any code.

The ps4 rendering 1080p at 120hz? Yeah no.

Unless they significantly pare down their graphical fidelity.
