Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @04:50PM (#50344338)
Gerry is also short for Gerald sometimes.

Tony in the US is often short for Anthony.

Chris, Kris, or Cris can be short for Christina, Kristina, Kristofer, Christopher, Kristian, Kristian, Christy, Krista, or Kristi. Sometimes you'll see Crys, Chris, Krys, Kris, or Cris for Crystal/Cristal/Chrystal/Krystal.

You'll also sometimes see Christopher shortened to Topher or to Kit.

I suppose that depends on whether by "best example" one means "the best example presented", "the best example extant", or "the best example possible".

Poor sleep when intended could also be a reason for falling asleep without planning to do so.
Re:Nibnib: Image compression with extreme decompression speed on Monday November 02, 2026 @12:31PM (#50340341)
It's a bit rambling, but I'm not sure I'd call it word salad. I promise you that in television spending a lot more resources on compression in a central location than on decompression at each cable headend, broadcast affiliate, smart TV, or customer streaming box is a desirable trait. For live programming, you'd need fast encoding but could use a heavyweight system with far more resources than your targets at the edge. For on-demand programming you could afford to encode slowly before putting the content on the CDN.
You'd choose something that's less than ideal if you're including multiple examples, because it's unlikely every example is the best one. You might give an example labelled specifically as a bad example. The word exemplar might be more familiar to many English speakers as the form "exemplary".

It can be difficult to know if your example is the exemplar. It can be reasonably assumed that if the creator of the language provides only one example, it at least should be the best one. It is at least the best one in the docs if it's the only one.

Or Pascal. Object Pascal systems that can compile to machine-native code have existed for decades, too. Delphi and FreePascal are two of them. Copper looks interesting. It competes in pretty crowded space of languages inspired by other languages that compile to native code and have an object system of some sort. Some of those others are also fairly minimalist.
An example is any random instance of something that illustrates a concept. You can load up a document with examples to demonstrate a range of possibilities. An exemplar is the chosen best way to model and explain a concept.

So in a programming text for a new language, one would use examples of things that are strings, or examples of structures one might declare. You might even see examples of multiple ways to solve a problem in code. An exemplar though shows the one best - or at least most recommended - way to do something in the language.

It would be great to have this as a bracer/half sleeve that could be worn independently of a whole shirt, sort of like a soft Pip-Boy.
Re:It's now official, tech is the new tobacco on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @04:32PM (#50280477)
Thomas Midgley, Jr. must have been a fascinating person. It's too bad rather than being known as president of the American Chemical Society he'll forever be remembered for both leaded gasoline and R12 refrigerant.
Re:It's now official, tech is the new tobacco on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:40PM (#50279709)
So has tech replaced oil and natural gas as the new tobacco, or do we have two new tobaccos right now? Oh, what about fast fashion? Recyclable plastics that aren't actually recyclable? Dodgy financial products remixed and hidden in your mutual funds? Unsafe tap water that passes all the city's tests but not at-home tests for the same contaminates? The Texas government being run by Republicans for decades who campaign on fixing the broken schools, roads, and taxes in Texas?
It's ICMP, so any network that doesn't filter ICMP and would allow malformed packets through could be a target. You'd have no idea when something was PXE booting, so you'd have to keep sending the packets and wait.

A bigger question I think is why you'd assign a public IP to a machine for PXE boot rather than booting it from a private IP space then assigning any publics once the OS is booted.

Some networks carry ICMP through untouched. Why you'd be using public addresses for your systems between DHCP and PXE boot is beyond me, but it's possible. However, someone would need to spray and pray because they wouldn't have visibility within the network to know about the DHCP and PXE traffic actually happening at that time.
Fair enough. The two other words are fascism and Nazism.
There's a shorter phrase for corporations and other large organizations colluding with or controlling an authoritarian government for the organizations' own ends at the expense of at least some subset of the people. It's actually only one word, and there are three options. Mussolini had corporatism on the mind. You probably know the other two, and one is a proper noun.
48V DC is also common in the telecommunications world and available in the data center world.
Isolation via a transfer switch or breaker lockouts is the right solution. If the grid fails and your power inverter shuts down, your house is without AC power.
Abbott and Paxton are comical frauds. Anyone who believes the schtick of either one after all this time maybe shouldn't make financial or healthcare decisions without help from a competent adult.
I would say I'm excited to know how you imagine that parallel, but I'm afraid you'd miss the sarcasm.
Especially considering who's in charge of the FBI at the moment.
Even if it's a scummy business model, there's a line between being a negotiator after the fact recruited by the victim and an accessory to the crime.

Not separate enough, it seems.
The scary thing is the agent that could read the bank account information and the agent that posted the information were separate agents.
Or Rudy Ray Moore.
Re:Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @11:10AM (#50088847)
You're asking a lot of a random HN commenter to explain RTS games from first principles.
Re:Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @09:22AM (#50087372)
The quotes I quoted are quotes, copied and pasted from the page linked in the HN submission. They are literally on the page.

I understand that you want more specificity, but it's simply untrue that the page doesn't make clear generally what sort of project it is.

Here's some more depth in my own words. It's a real-time strategy game from Cave Dog Games in 1997. It's a precursor to Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. It's a spiritual ancestor to Spring, Supreme Commander, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, Supreme Commander 2, the Forged Alliance Forever project, Planetary Alliance, and a few others. Zero-K and BAR are other updated reimplementations. It competes in the space with the original Starcraft, with Warcraft II, the earlier Command and Conquer series games, Dune 2000, and that sort. It has land, sea, and air units and dedicated construction vehicles of all three types. By default there's a commander to protect whose death causes a player to lose the game, but that can be configured to be off. There are stationary units like artillery and buildings including power generators, metal extractors, and factories that make the other units. The construction mobile units and the commander build the land units and buildings. The linked page shows the sort of graphics the original has and puts them side by side with the reimplemented version from the project.

It ran on Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP just fine. ISTM it would run on NT 4 and 2000. I think it runs on 7 from the CD and maybe 10. I don't use the discs much these days though because despite owning two or three disc copies I also got it on sale on two or three different digital storefronts.

Re:Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @10:43AM (#50072533)
Even the Hummer H2 is only 2m wide and 2m tall. And it's 5m long. It's about 3,000 kg.

The HMMWV is somewhat heavier in many of its configurations. but that's an actual military model. It's still a bit under 4,000 kg.

Those are some of the biggest SUV models extant.

Re:Total Annihilation, rebuilt for modern computers on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:07AM (#50071100)
These are all found on the project's main page.

> Nanolathe is an open-source engine for playing Total Annihilation on Windows, Mac and Linux. It loads the original maps, units and campaigns. You can try it right here with the three-mission browser demo.

> Nanolathe loads the original game data directly, including the scripts that turn turrets and open factory doors.

> It’s a new engine that runs the original game’s data.

Re:A Cop's Case for Flock on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @01:20PM (#49995855)
Plain view doctrine is a bullshit excuse in this discussion. Yes, you can expect to be in plain view of people including the police. You can expect that a camera can see you and record you. That part indeed is not a search.

A database of your movements and the associated photos or videos of those movements is not plain view. That's assembling a dossier. That is related to things like harassment laws and stalking laws.

Being able to access that database with a query is literally - literally, in the literal sense - a search. It's a search of information compiled about you going about your Constitutionally protected rights to travel, assemble, earn a living, and whatever else is not specifically illegal. It's a Fourth Amendment issue the very same way cell phone geofencing is a Fourth Amendment issue, and the US Supreme Court recently ruled on dragnets of cellphone data. It requires a judicial warrant.

Being in plain view in public does not give a police officer probable cause to follow you wherever you go, take down photos, videos, and notes about your route, and publish that to an interagency database as if you're a known suspect just so they can find you later in case you become a suspect. Doing the same thing with a little AI box on the side of the road is the same thing, not something entirely different.

A culture that can cooperate among themselves well enough to reach distant stars may have evolved to respect sentience. They might try to befriend anyone who's capable of reciprocating.
