"Here's our new AI" - "But does it run doom?"
"The world should stop trusting the US companies" OTOH...

Zoomers invented indexes.
Re:Writing GUI apps for Windows is painful on Sunday June 30, 2024 @04:03PM (#40839884)
Who's going to tell him about C++ Builder (Embarcadero)?
Re:JPEG XL Is a Stupid Name on Tuesday March 05, 2024 @04:12AM (#39601048)
Yeah, avif is better.

Seriously, can we just settle on that? It's objectively the best and the fact that there are so many of competing alternatives is the reason why we're still stuck with that 8bit artifact ridden ancient JPEG.

Re:The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6 on Thursday February 29, 2024 @09:15AM (#39549528)
I will be _very_ surprised if there's a KDE6 in official ports within three months.
Re:Not all TLDs are Created Equal on Wednesday February 14, 2024 @12:24PM (#39372443)

I would guess people in Yemen (most recently) would find this statement somewhat funny.

Any advantages over phpliteadmin, for example?
Re:Fungi survives outside international space station on Sunday January 28, 2024 @04:34PM (#39170031)
The ISS is well within the Earth magnetic shield for starters. Almost no radiation, compared to real outer space.
Re:A 2024 Plea for Lean Software on Friday January 19, 2024 @04:45AM (#39053521)
I think his point was mostly about "writing software". As in you won't need specific software anymore and the computer/network would do what you tell it without specific "apps".
Re:SQLite: Wal2 Mode on Monday January 15, 2024 @06:13AM (#38999533)
Would it be a problem since the wal you delete, its inode, will still be open and processed at the DB closing normally? Just guessing, never tried that.
BTW, there's no way, documented or not, to switch off branch predictor on a modern CPU, right?

Re:Do you really need foreign keys? on Thursday December 21, 2023 @03:54PM (#38726784)
Yes.

And if you're concerned for microspeed of basic operations Postgres isn't your friend anyway.

Re:W3C Leaves Twitter on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @05:51PM (#38550590)
I didn't mean their social presence, I meant their activity as a standards org in recent years.
Re:W3C Leaves Twitter on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @01:53PM (#38548007)
Shouldn't that be "we are no longer active, period"?
But try avoiding death metal growl.
Re:In OpenZFS and Btrfs, everyone was just guessing on Thursday November 30, 2023 @11:23AM (#38475385)
Too much source, eventually a human cannot follow it. A common software (and not only) problem.

Maybe sometimes once in 2-3 decades it's worth taking the lessons learned and re-doing the thing? Simplifying and streamlining it greatly in the process?

Like, this bug, the file holes - do we even need them now, with very good compression for once?

Re:WASM by Example on Friday November 17, 2023 @01:06AM (#38300138)
about:config

javascript.options.wasm -> false

I don't see how WASM isn't everything that Web was NOT supposed to be. Minified/obfuscated JS is bad enough already.

Re:FreeBSD 14.0 has reached – RELEASE on Monday November 13, 2023 @05:41AM (#38248847)
> 1. Where do you use FreeBSD? On your laptop? Remote servers? Routers?

Everything headless and sometimes kiosks.

> 2. Why do you use FreeBSD instead of Linux?

There's no such thing as "using Linux". You should ask why use FreeBSD over Debian, or why FreeBSD over Arch. Much easier questions with often quite obvious answers.

> 3. Why do you use FreeBSD instead of OpenBSD or another *BSD?

OpenBSD has no usable filesystem.

> 4. Do you find something lacking in FreeBSD? Is there something that is good in another OS that you'd like to see in FreeBSD?

Not really. Maybe swappiness and zram would be nice sometimes, but no biggie.

> 5. What is that one thing about FreeBSD that you would hate to lose if you were forced to use another OS?

Simplicity, coherence, and reliability.

Re:Typing Fast Is About Latency, Not Throughput on Friday November 10, 2023 @02:31AM (#38216149)
From what I read the alternatives aren't seriously better when real world tested.
Re:Typing Fast Is About Latency, Not Throughput on Friday November 10, 2023 @02:13AM (#38216047)
Why don't the schools, regular ones, teach proper ten finger touch typing? But then, will it still be a common vital skill in let's say 20 years? (I think yes)
Re:Cursorless is alien magic from the future – Xe Iaso on Friday November 10, 2023 @02:04AM (#38215990)
I thought about trackballs, but they didn't work for me. Mouse is still the best.
Re:Cursorless is alien magic from the future – Xe Iaso on Friday November 10, 2023 @01:42AM (#38215839)
LOL
Re:Cursorless is alien magic from the future – Xe Iaso on Friday November 10, 2023 @01:32AM (#38215775)
My $.02 RSI advice:

- Get a TKL keyboard, those extra 5 inches to stretch to your mouse are important

- Or try using your mouse IN FRONT of your keyboard, like, I usually have mine turned 90' counter-clockwise and resting somewhere under my left "Alt" key. If you never used it that way it may feel weird for like 5 minutes. Then it's natural for eternity

- And get a mechanical keyboard ("red" switches should be okay for most people)

Finally, Java arrives to our browsers!

Maybe we could use it to write some small applications with it, let's call them "applets".

Re:Ask HN: How can we help Firefox not to dissapear? on Tuesday October 31, 2023 @10:25AM (#38085353)
Gecko should be decoupled from Firefox (embeddable)

It should support hardware APIs like Web Serial API (their stance that a browser is not an app platform is ridiculous)

Chromium's huge and underappreciated weakness is that their font rendering on Windows is horrible (at standard 96 DPI anyway), FF could've capitalized on things like that.

Not on Google-made OSes, no. Like most Androids.
I read this as "Google plans to compete with Cloudflare as the leading MITM attack provider".
