85% of people hate their jobs and just want to spend time with their family and friends. Utilitarianly, AGI is a benefit for the vast majority of people. And people who get their pride from playing status games are about to learn what it feels like to be on the other side

Worth keeping an eye on ArtCraft (https://getartcraft.com/apps).

They're building a free, open-source Adobe Creative Suite alternative entirely in Rust. It runs super fast with minimal overhead, works completely offline, and aims for near 1:1 feature parity with Adobe products like Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. It also supports command-based actions, making it easy to integrate into AI agents and automated workflows. They have Microsoft Office alternatives too.

Their Photoshop clone, PhotoCraft (https://github.com/storytold/photocraft), has around 47k GitHub stars right now.

Don’t forget the unbounded liability of AGI: your job disappears before you can accumulate the capital you need. On the bright side, you’re retired. Really simplifies the spreadsheet.

Reminder that the federal government spends over $1.5 trillion annually on Social Security, the vast majority to people who 1) didn't put in as much as they are now getting and 2) spend their day watching TV or socializing and cooking food. 25% of our federal budget is paid to people that contribute nothing while the rest of us work our asses off to pay into a system which will likely collapse by the time we retire.

Mathematicians getting funded only do 0.0001% of the leeching that retirees do.

I think everyone deserves the opportunity. Most will still veg out even if they had no minimum wage blue collar monotonous job. But everyone deserves a chance. Some people are born into it and have no chance. While I was lucky to have a supportive financially stable family through no work of my own yet I wasted it all scrolling my phone.

This is a picture of washed up unwanted clothes in Africa: https://static.independent.co.uk/2022/07/27/15/sdfgfdghgh.jp...

When society gets to point where creating things like food, clean water, and medication becomes near-zero and over-abundant, just like the amount of clothing waste in the photo, then the tech bro overlords won't hesitate to dump a bunch of free useful shit to the masses to sedate them. Right now, societies in developed countries throw out 25% of all food. There is no one in the west starving, the poorer you are the more likely you are to be obese. We are being sedated by youtube and tiktok every day, everyone has a phone. Poor in the first world is like being a king 200 years ago, everyone has plumbing which would be considered a miracle in the 1700s, so we continue to up our standards more and more. Once giving someone a house and land becomes genuinely dirt cheap due to interplanetary expansion- people will get houses and LAND as welfare.

Meanwhile there are kids in Africa that would consider their prayers answered if we developed AGI so they could stop sending their 6 year old son out in the dunes to mine cobalt. They couldn't care less about wealth inequality in the first world, they want what the poorest American has. Someone's grandma who has terminal illness does not give one fuck about slowing down AI, they want AI to give them their cure medicine now.

You don't need a massive government program for this.

Just post on r/DataHoarder: "Free 16TB NVMe SSD to anyone who indexes and mirrors the entire out-of-print 20th-century physical archive." The problem would be solved by next Tuesday. With probably 10x redundancy and people willing to do it for free for fun.

Realistically the vast majority of those books haven't been touched for half a century and won't ever be read by a human again. It is a price to destroy these, but it's a price I would pay for progressing models towards AGI and the billions of lives it will save.
Ah, yes, because we all know OpenAI and Anthropic are famously just front operations for the high-end antiquarian book trade.

Slack (acquired by Salesforce in 2021 for $27 billion) started out as a chat app built for the devs of a failing online multiplayer video game called Glitch.
you call them stupid questions, but i say these are quite good, trivial-seeming but actually non-trivial questions that lead you to a deeper understanding.

Yeah I don't think Mr. Johnson foresaw TikTok.
This is why coins like Ethereum Classic needs like 50k confirmations which is a 1-2 week waiting period for deposits, since blocks take like 15 seconds to mine and a 51% attack on the ETC network is relatively affordable compared to BTC/ETH, so fake chains sprout up very often and many transactions would be reversed
Re:Ask HN: Any way to deactivate your Hacker News account? on Monday September 05, 2022 @01:04AM (#32720748)
That's why he said he will delete if you request, GDPR or not. They've helped me delete a previous account, change usernames, and delete comments- they are nice people and aren't trying to make anything difficult. They just don't want deleting to be as instant as reddit with a delete button which can easily disrupt archives- such as when you go into old threads on reddit on google, you see like half the comments deleted and that makes for a poor reader experience.

This is the most random funnest thing i've done in days. I tried to inception it by pasting the hyperbeam link into the VC, didn't work though heh.

Really good animations! Hoping we can play past games or at least generate new phrases after completing the day's puzzle because this is somewhat entertaining and dopaminergic for some odd reason.

E Myth Revisited Lean Startup Zero to One

Not a book but just a personal opinion, that building is the easier part, marketing is way more difficult and it is way more important. If you want to be an entrepreneur, it's not going to be very fun or stimulating

Re:Ask HN: Why isn't TikTok owned by the U.S. government? on Saturday July 23, 2022 @09:11AM (#32202989)
Because Twitter is banned by China and isn't used there.
Your thoughts aren't == to you. Your mind is literally a monkey facepalming onto a keyboard 24/7, telling you to worry about the most random trivial things. Don't think too much, you are slowly killing yourself by overthinking.
Re:Ask HN: Do you use the browser address bar to search? on Wednesday June 15, 2022 @12:32AM (#31749139)
I don't think I've visited the homepage of https://www.google.com/ in a decade. The "I'm Feeling Lucky" button click rate probably dropped 99.99% ever since browsers started including search in the address bar.
dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)
Marketing/Sales is basically everything. People would be doing everything but marketing and acquiring users, and this of course led to the downfall of the startup.

Good example of correlation and not causation.

I think you are definitely onto something here. I used to take 10k IU vitamin D a day and still felt meh, but getting a bright ass white light (2300 lumens) in my room has uplifted my mood, increased wakefulness, and boosted my general productivity alot. I used to have a warm Phillips Hue and I couldn't do any work in my room without wanting to nap.
