Re:Covid-19: Do many people have pre-existing immunity? on Thursday September 17, 2020 @02:50PM (#24508477)
What the words means in common usage doesn't have to track what immunity actually is. Colloquially, immunity means sterilizing immunity. Actually, immunity doesn't have to be sterilizing.

Google will display videos from other sources both at the top of the web search and in the videos search.
Re:Google removes all Danish music from YouTube on Friday July 31, 2020 @11:23AM (#24009533)
I don't think the OC implied that musicians (or their agents) shouldn't have pricing authority, just that the market won't bear the prices they seem to want.

The moment a digital file exists, your competing price point is free. People can still pirate, and don't because of youtube and streaming sites. You don't have to think that's right or fair (I don't), but it's absolutely the reality.

>But it's true, a black individual is on average more likely to commit a crime.

More likely to be convicted of a crime. That's a subtle but very important distinction.

I honestly can't. And in any case, the real test is the individual characters in isolation.
That all seems very reasonable. Apps downloaded from other sources are much more dangerous than apps downloaded from Google Play.
I don't think most users would appreciate having a site spike their CPU for a few seconds when they visit...at least I wouldn't.

Assemble carrying weapons and with half the crowd claiming that the entire disease is fake, though?
You didn't claim they weren't, but I just want to point out how each of those points is very, very subjective. For me:

- I'd much rather be in-person, where I can better gauge what others are communicating and more readily have two-way communication about the material.

- I'm way less focused when on my own computer, on my own time.

- I find I communicate way less purely online than I would in-person.

- Automatic grading sucks, especially for programming, as it can only really test inputs and outputs, and misses a ton of nuance. I want to also know if my code sucks, regardless of it producing the correct output or not.

Those hospitalized tend to be elderly. How many frequent smokers live to be elderly?
The DOE land on which ORNL sits has a massive stand that they used for testing of this idea. They'd suspend a reactor to test shielding effectiveness. You can see it from a few spots on I-40/I-75 and on Highway 95 going by the lab's west entrance.
Do the other common solutions claim to have e2e encryption?
Re:Sewage could reveal true scale of coronavirus outbreak on Saturday April 04, 2020 @09:00PM (#22782849)
You don't need live viruses, just their RNA.

"mainly baseline lung damage" could you expand on what you mean there?
This is the first spam message I've ever seen on HN after using it for several years, which is quite impressive really.

That there is a plethora of implementations of and documentation available for. There is no need to memorize an implementation.
Re:Russia blocks ProtonMail on Thursday January 30, 2020 @12:02PM (#22192955)
> He suggested that they give data for specific people that they already have.

...how were they to know to capture data from those specific people before being asked?

Re:Russia blocks ProtonMail on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @11:24AM (#22182253)
Given that the police wanted information after having already received the threats, they had to have requested some combination of historical and future data. They almost certainly wanted historical data primarily so that they could find the person who sent the threats.

There's no way to satisfy requests for historical data without capturing data from everyone.

I hope so. When the phone system was manually-operated switch boards, should the phone companies have been responsible for listening to every call and reporting suspicious activity to the police?
Re:Magic Roundabout (Swindon) on Thursday January 23, 2020 @09:25AM (#22127756)
Follow a lane around and you'll find that the inside lane becomes the outside and the outside lane exits.
Re:Women now make up the majority of the U.S. labor force on Friday January 10, 2020 @02:56PM (#22014726)
Not sure what inequality you're talking about, given that the US population is right at a 50/50 split between men and women. Then again, I'm not sure how genuine you're being here.
Re:Gandi loses data, customers told to use their own backups on Thursday January 09, 2020 @11:32AM (#22002578)
> You host your data on someone else's computer to save on costs and get rid of the burden of dealing with metal and stabbing yourself with screwdrivers , and you're the victim when they fuckup?

A company violates their agreement with you in a way that costs you time, money, and potentially business, and you're not the victim?

I can't imagine a scenario in which the authority could be help liable for mistakes made by a third party in scheduled times for public transport.
I think there's a pretty wide gulf between that and government-enforced censorship, to the point that comparing the two seems a bit disingenuous.

"Twitter has even begun censoring political speech from public figures"

vs

"The FBI will require Twitter to censor political speech from public figures"

I think those two scenarios are eons apart.

Could you expand on some of the things youtube has done that you believe might be the result of external political pressure?
Re:Piper Announces First GA Aircraft with Autoland Capability on Thursday October 31, 2019 @08:29AM (#21407981)
Whole aircraft parachute systems have undoubtedly saved lives.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28539144

There are already plenty of airplanes that have the ability to land themselves under specific conditions. There's no whole-new technology here. Even if it was brand new, I'm not sure how that would be less safe.

Re:Oxford Professor Is Accused of Selling Ancient Texts on Tuesday October 22, 2019 @02:35PM (#21327085)
Unless it's already been edited, that comment is in no way a personal attack. Not even close.
The unequal application of the law based on race. Equal treatment under the law is just as much a fundamental right as freedom of expression is and, arguably, equal treatment prevents the subtle and slow erosion of other rights.
Acknowledging that rights are more readily and equally given to some people than others is not whining.

What risks make that extraordinary cost worthwhile?
