Re:Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:58AM (#50300002)
That's not the whole point at all. And there are truly wild west cryptos, but most people want some trustworthy regulatory body, whether it's a government or not, backstopping their funds when they get large enough.

For instance to unwind a 5 billion dollar robbery

Where are the papers???

It's cool as fuck but calling it flying is misleading. It jumps and can maneuver in space.
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:33PM (#50111824)
yes pretty much, spin up a vm, run your coding agent of choice and ask it to reverse engineer whatever part of the app you need. You dont need to setup the emulation sandbox or even download the app, agent can take care of that.
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:32PM (#50111819)
Its a lot of work to actually be anonymous, use a clean browser, vpn, tor, etc... It's too easy to slip up.
Re:Muse Spark Open on Thursday October 15, 2026 @07:24PM (#50111757)
UX is not a moat, especially in the era of AI software replication. I disagree that there are network effects for MUSE, maybe there will be at some point (e.g. vendors or something sign up for it) but I would love to hear why its better to be on muse when more people use it? Barrier to entry is somewhere they have an advantage, but not more of an advantage than google, or really anyone who has an app installed on your phone already.
Re:Muse Spark Open on Thursday October 15, 2026 @03:06PM (#50108683)
Social networks have network effects, an ai assistant does not
Re:Muse Spark Open on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:22PM (#50107960)
Muse is not sticky at all, it's just OpenClaw wrapped in meta branding. Any company can roll one out
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Thursday October 15, 2026 @12:37PM (#50106237)
I've had some luck with this too. Every device you buy wants you install an app on your phone. Not if I can help it.

Wish I could release the apps I've "made", but worry about DMCA

It's hard to interface with society this way. I'm the same as you and have waxed and waned many times. There are periods where I'm all about being social and living a normal life. There are other times where I'm just down to only sleep when I'm dead tired (as opposed to using drugs to keep me in normal rhythm). There are tradeoffs
Live on East Coast, take a west coast remote job. 9am Meeting is noon.

I did this for several years. It works great

Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:57PM (#49970611)
Lol, like it's some sort of psy-op. I dont check hackernews that often. My point was that banks are pushing one factor, just the phone, by requiring you to use your phone number or their app as the 'second factor'. I don't know which banks you can use without a phone number in the US.

What you can do is create a second email that is not at all accessible on your phone, but this is not what 99.9% of people do.

Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Saturday October 03, 2026 @12:24AM (#49941335)
you don't have access to your email on your phone?
Re:F-Droid 2.0: A New Chapter for Android Freedom on Thursday September 24, 2026 @06:51PM (#49837871)
How do you get around this? Literally every bank, brokerage, etc... is hell bent on you using your phone for everything from 2FA to passkeys, etc... They dont even imagine people have computers anymore or want two+ physical devices/controls on what can be done with which factors

What a nice post hoc revision of history. Distillation is still an active area of research, that you can distill models as easily as you can it genuinely interesting and absolutely not something that was taken for granted even 12 months ago.

Even 6 months ago this idea that 'using model outputs as training examples' was listed as the reason that all models would fail in the near future due to some spooky circular training catastrophe.

Don't pretend like this was so obvious.

Honestly, 60-70% of this feeling is just inflation. If things were still affordable, the doom and gloom would be much less palpable. Inflation will get under control, but we still have other problems with the direction of social cohesion.

brain was grown in house and likely deserves as much or more credit than open ai for the current llm boom
Re:Is AI Profitable Yet? on Saturday May 23, 2026 @01:02AM (#48244854)
Search, yt, etc.. are the real revenue sources for Google. But they are serving [3.2 quadrillion tokens per month](https://blog.google/innovation-and-ai/sundar-pichai-io-2026/...) and have ramped up a ton in 2026, yet profits continue to expand.

Comparing to ad revenue from a company like meta, the story that Gemini tokens are a strong cash drag on Google just doesn't add up. It seems at worst they are losing like 50 cents/1M tokens (including r&d spend, data centers, etc..), and very possible they are actually profitable per token.

Which is much better than anthropic and openai.

Re:Is AI Profitable Yet? on Friday May 22, 2026 @11:17PM (#48244276)
How are the Google numbers calculated? I've seen their net income increasing a lot as they've rolled out Gemini. This suggests that Gemini tokens are actually profitable, or at least not extremely unprofitable.

Yet this site suggests that tokens are very unprofitable

If you actually have time to read all your code, understand it, and are willing to be bottlenecked by human understanding, then yes, you are living in a different world.

In my world, that is far too slow, and you will be seen as a low performer who just can't keep up with the tech.

Re:What I'm Hearing About Cognitive Debt (So Far) on Tuesday May 05, 2026 @06:16PM (#48029460)
Not my experience, most people are mercenaries, most people make mistakes, most people need their code and architecture reviewed. Obviously working with a person and working with an AI are not identical, but most of the broad responsibilities are the same.

And it's much more like senior IC than it is manager.

Re:What I'm Hearing About Cognitive Debt (So Far) on Monday May 04, 2026 @11:58PM (#48017887)
While this isn't a unique perspective, I think it's wild more people don't understand this. What happened is everyone is being "promoted" to staff+ level engineer and they're realizing the realities of that situation.

The funny part is that these are the same people who are upset that these folks up the food chain "do nothing".

A lot of people focus on the whole dynamic of corleone family and their position in American society in the Godfather. But seriously did you see what vito was eating in the restaurant?? Makes no sense

Kojima always has some paranormal activity in his games. And he does like to subvert expectations about what is technology and what is paranormal

Not much, just accurately predicted the next 30 years exactly
Re:Meta to cut 10% of jobs, or 8k employees on Thursday April 23, 2026 @11:26PM (#47885132)
Are these meta engineers that were let go? The one thing you learn more than anything else as a Meta engineer is how to sell your work and how amazing it is
Idk, do you think it's sensitive for the employer to train an AI with it and then put that AI on Instagram for everyone to use and ask for employee SSNs?
They absolutely do, wtf are you talking about.

Also people use their work accounts and laptops to read their w2 and other sensitive info.

How does it not apply anonymity? All you see is some vote came in with a particular public key. That's it. Thats more private than we have now
Even in small groups, being respected and considered valuable is important? I'm not sure what you mean here.

I take your point, and I too get triggered when people invoke mate selection and dopamine. I could be with you in being skeptical about that specific angle... but absolutely if you look at lawless or less institutionalized cultures, there is a trend towards appearing strong/tough and hiding any weaknesses

Victim blaming cancer patients as cope so you can convince yourself "it won't happen to me" is a disgusting trend
