Weird argument, as you could apply it to every patent issue in the world. Just as an example: Better video encoding is good for the world, so h264/hevc patents must be void.
Re:Blurry rendering of games on Mac on Friday August 15, 2025 @03:06AM (#44909425)
Meta: the name on HN was "Blurry game rendering on Mac" or something. Now we have the same title as in the article - clickbait-sounding. Why?

"If you comply here, you will be compliant in almost all EU countries or even around the world" situation, many qualified students, international talent pool due to attractive cities, quality of life, startup grants/funding, hotspot for B2B fairs...
Re:Windows XP Professional on Thursday August 07, 2025 @04:31PM (#44829955)
It had Pinball, Solitaire and other games we never really understood.
Simpler: why can't I buy nsfw games with a regular dumb bank transaction (SEPA €) in my case?

If MasterCard/Visa don't want these transactions, stupid, their loss. But at least let me use a payment method that works & doesn't have these morale restrictions?

Germany: I don't know of anything a normal company could do as a "background check". Some sectors can ask for a criminal record which the future employee has to provide. Of 3 companies I was at, 0 required (or were allowed to require) this.

Military/government jobs with secret data have their own, through clearance checks of course, but a random IT company would never have this.

On the other hand, you have to submit so many tax, social security, insurance-related IDs which are cross-checked, I don't think it's feasible to impersonate someone here. It's also a reason why over-employment is not possible.

Every day I get ads by Temu saying "get this electric bicycle for 0€", "this tablet is available for free" and other very misleading claims. Apparently you have to have bought many other things before in order to save up enough "coins" or whatever to get that, but this is not mentioned in the ads and thus illegal.

And worse: really expensive compared to other brands or store brands. This is my issue with Beyond.
Re:EU to ban carry-on baggage fees on Sunday June 29, 2025 @05:46PM (#44416742)
Which is probably totally fine - the statistics would speak the truth here. Funny how the airlines have this data but are not presenting it here, curious thing...
Re:EU to ban carry-on baggage fees on Sunday June 29, 2025 @05:45PM (#44416726)
Because Ryanair's default is one tiny bag, in which you can only take clothes for 2 days. Even another tiny bag or shopping bag is not included.
I am not sure if I got you, are you aware of the cultural/political issues around it? There's no flag for the language (as it's used at many places), but almost everyone will be happy with a commonly known flag they can identify with. A Valencian will be fine with a Catalunya flag :)
Haven't tested the functionality yet, but some feedback:

- the name is bad. Issen? I (German, Spanish speaker) don't know how to pronounce it.

- use correct flags. Catalan speakers will be rightfully pissed when you use the Spanish flag for their language.

- in a language learning focused app, it is not acceptable to have a badly translated app. I'm using it in German and while the intro does not have typos, I can tell it's all just AI blubber

- For German specifically, I'd recommend you to use "du" and not "Sie" ("Wie heißen Sie?") across the app. If your tool isn't aimed at 60+ year old BMW drivers, use "du".

What test strips are you using? It's the first time I am hearing about that, I guess it's not common in Germany.

I/we track it, mostly because she is a bit clumsy and forgets when her last period was & when the next one is. So not for ovulation tracking at all. Once she told me she thought she was pregnant because her period still was not there; I checked chats & the app and could confirm her period was still two weeks away :).

No, but people don't care about UX perfection in comparison. Usually it just needs to work and not get in the way.
As I had failed finding an app that was not ad-ridden or oldish, my girlfriend and I are using this (I am copying her values, to know when her period will be). Also contributing some code :)
People have multiple devices, want to make the data available to their partners, etc. It's a legitimate but fragile use case.
Re:OpenAI dropped the price of o3 by 80% on Wednesday June 11, 2025 @12:56PM (#44249507)
Why only 365 days? Would be way fairer and still ok for you (if it's such a big issue) to expire them after 5 years.
Title says: locally it's expensive

Other person says: I had to spend 4000$ and it's still slow

Re:Turn a Tesla into a mapping vehicle with Mapillary on Friday May 30, 2025 @06:37AM (#44134765)
I'm not sure what you expected, Mapillary is built to make pictures and upload them with the most information possible. Street View but for everyone, and there's no need to have a 360° camera.

Re:The Awful German Language on Friday May 16, 2025 @06:54PM (#44010526)
In some way yes, but not really. Had a colleague working on a project for Deutsche Bahn (state owned train operator), he was developing an app and the domain knowledge was full of long German words, no one outside this bubble ever uses: Bremshundertstel, Bremszettel, Mindestbremshundertstel, Notbremsüberbrückung... In a way it's better to have a super long name for this, so there are no 2-3 ways to describe the same thing.
Why do you think money is the ultimate motivator? It's proven that after some salary amount, you no longer get (much, if at all) happier. And if US politics is affecting you in a bad way, a salary hit will be totally fine.
AFAIK the usual counter point to this is "Hamas could decide to not buy weapons, instead buy water & food. But they don't". - I don't know what is more truthy, just mentioning it.
Re:20 years to give away virtually all my wealth on Friday May 09, 2025 @04:27AM (#43934838)
That could help in the long run, but you could also help people not die. Both are good causes and need funding
Have the authors never heard of Lego being one of the companies that are super strict about their trademark? They file takedown notices etc on every project they see. Even if the stone design has the little thingies on top/bottom...
The comment rears like "This is impossible to do in the US", while it is commonplace in many countries around the world. And of course, there are also many countries where it's more shaded (in Germany you don't need to tip, but it is definitely appreciated and it's leaning a bit more towards the US, but still far away from it)
Have beginner and intermediate examples (1 page) available. Also helps show what the real UI looks like. Because the current tiny demo UI is probably not the real one, not sure?

Also, pricing is not mentioned anywhere on the start page or before signup

App Stores have nothing to little to do with what you are complaining about.

As we are talking about Android:

- Play Store: makes sure developers don't do nefarious stuff with the user's data. Yes, for us power users some restrictions are simply wrong, I agree. Use an alternative store for that. But what it does well is optimizing performance: instead of 1 apk with 4 ABI supports (or 4 apk with 1 ABI support each), it can use app bundles to serve you only what your device needs. Also, the Play Store learns what parts of the app are commonly used and contributed this back to make performance improvements for all other users (I was amazed the first time I heard about this). - F-Droid, any other store: ensures your privacy/no-restriction/etc needs are covered.

What they all have in common: your app gets updates! Do you want bugs to be there forever? Do you want to go through 100 apps and manually install updates? Please, no one wants to do that. On your Unix machine you also don't manually check all updates using your package manager, and what changelog each has.

Re:Oxide's compensation model: how's it going? on Thursday May 01, 2025 @06:00PM (#43863870)
I understand that currently (and maybe because you are "only" 75 employees) it feels fair for everyone, or people are even feeling bad about it. Also it sets the bar high when hiring someone, I get that.

But what if in a year or two a person is not so great anymore? Just by my own past work experience at 2-3 companies, there were always some colleagues that were definitely not good at their job (and this was pretty much common knowledge, multiple people had the same opinion). Maybe they were good at the beginning, or not even then. I would have felt it to be super unfair for them to get the same money, or the same salary bump as me.

I am not good at this. I don't want to try (I tried 2 things, it just answered in Chinese...), glad the answers are there
