Except their contracts are literally illegal under several jurisdictions, which is why they don’t attempt to enforce them usually.
Just because they wrote it, and you signed it, does not always make it legally binding…

No it is not, it’s from exposure. The moment symptoms show you are already a walking dead man, even advanced options like ECMO don’t work.

The particular bacterium if infecting the skin is fairly treatable and mild with modern medicine, pneumonic plague is 100% lethal if not treated within 24h and utterly asymptomatic during the first 24h, it’s also airborne. Same bacterium but very different diseases..

So, I can’t honestly personally understand taking your shoes off in an emergency, however I am sure they have gotten very efficient at it.. I can say that if they didn’t it would cause damage to the home, many Japanese homes, especially traditional but also in general just aren’t built to take shoes. Tatami mats, and even hinoki floors despite being “hard” for a softwood, is still a softwood, so some level of genuine damage would occur. Again of-course versus the emergency in saving a human life, I’m not quite sure I can understand it.

Well, play it out in a simulation, what happens if you have two groups of humans, one can build wealth across generations, and infact already have access to better education, food, and the enormous privileged of rolling the dice and failing without suffering extreme consequences. The other group doesn’t, and now on top of it? They can’t work harder to build some wealth and pass it on to their descendants because the “state” legally disincentivises it.
You have in essence legally protected the rich from competition even inter-generationally.
Re:Hacking IKEA Furniture
on Sunday August 30, 2026 @08:43PM (#49504387)
This is a complex topic and I’m not going to do it justice in a comment, but I feel like modern society might just be destroying social mobility in the name of what you described, while the already rich are dynasty building just fine as usual via a variety of legal means only available to them selves.
Re:Hacking IKEA Furniture

I’m not sure I understand this perspective, I’m looking forward to inheriting some of my parents furnitures and getting rid of some of the ikea crap.. they are furniture that have been in the family in some cases for over 200 years, and I learned to maintain them and care for them as a kid just as a regular part of housework. Some have had amusing changes in use as the times changed, like an old wardrobe being turned into a chest of drawers as larger wardrobes became available, etc.

Snowden had mass access to a mass surveillance program, not mass access to N dark programs or particular bits of high value intelligence. The thing you are describing is primarily around sharing threat intelligence or in other words, spying on us plebes.
High value target intelligence and other bits of fun are still kept quite seperate.

I can’t imagine any agency in their right mind training an LLM on their top secret data… especially considering that essentially it would collapse all need to know data in one easily leakable single access domain. The models have no feasible or reasonable way to implement rbac. So you would end up in a situation where people who need to know who killed A, also know who killed B, not to mention cell A knowing potentially data on Cell B who is meant to watch them, etc, etc.

Yes you are losing water but the phase change energy of water is immense, very little needs to be evaporated comparatively for immense cooling.

Primary theft at them is where you scan N cheap items and just bag Y expensive item without scan and walk out, plausible deniability/psychology at play, a lot less deniability if you shove a whisky bottle down your trousers.

I’m familiar with datacentres, I’ve helped build a few, so I kept up with the new systems, they still aren’t that lossy last time I checked their specs.. however obviously I don’t have access to all the designs popping up in this mad rush.
Re:The Water Footprint of AI
on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @06:56AM (#49256200)
Did we somehow mass build pure lossy evaporatively cooled data-centres in the AI era while I was asleep ? Most of them im familiar with lose at best 3-4% of their water per day due to recovery systems even when they are evaporative or open loop to a lake. Yet nearly everyone I hear talking about this seems to treat it as if they lose 100% of their water loop contents per day as if it’s a matter-antimatter destruction system…

I didn’t make any claims towards spesific scams, just a lack of effective mechanisms to hold companies accountable, a lot of countries governance systems do indeed have audits and mechanisms to address companies making large numbers of individuals unhappy or where large number of individuals feel they are being treated unfairly.

So that report was discontinued after relatively proven statistical gaming and interference by several countries, doesn’t exist post 2020.
Post 2020 SPICE+ launched making registration trivially fast. However really the trick isn’t creating and closing companies, it’s that the fact majority of reporting that would catch scam companies like these just get ignored and gather small civil penalties payable years later or not at all, while keeping up with major reporting that might close their bank accounts… it’s a very disorganised system that facilitates a lot of unpleasant activity.

Well… your bike likely has several lubricants, and paints as well as coatings that especially in close contact with your skin… especially in the handle bars under friction indeed probably introduce chemicals that will increase some risks, versus never having done it.
That is the horror of what we have done with modern material science…
Would you prefer a label that gives you only risk increases above say 1% ? Alternatively you can just assume we have complicated the world so much with modern material tech that despite its benefits nearly everything you touch increases your cancer chances in America.

Re:The 2-Year Apartment Rule
on Thursday June 18, 2026 @08:35AM (#48584388)
Is his experience really that peculiar? He obviously picks an apartment that meets his comfort level, but apartments go through cycles of deterioration and repair, and staying at a static level of quality is economically very difficult at most market segments, given the industry’s engineering choices. So he selects an acceptable starting point and then watches it deteriorate below that. Eventually the apartment drops too low for its market segment and undergoes partial remanufacture; the cycle then repeats until something not easily repairable wears out, at which point it shifts market segment entirely. This loop usually continues until the whole building is remanufactured, unless it’s of historical significance.
Re:Green Card Seekers Must Leave U.S. to Apply, Trump Administration Says

Fair question, though it assumes citizenships are simple things you “use,” which you either need or don’t. They’re not. People attach all sorts of baggage, duties, and rights to them. Mine are a mix of ancestry, residence, and ones I helped my spouse with. They’re not things I “need,” they’re just where my family and life have been. European family trees often produce this. The original point still stands: even when you’re entitled to a citizenship, actually obtaining the documents takes real time and money.

It’s not automatic, it requires applying and at times can take years of proving in terms of paperwork, that is by definition not automatic.
I have personal experience with the Greek, German, and Italian systems, prepare your self for 1-2 years to gain it even if you have rights to it.
