You are apt to be wrong.

Either that is a misplaced apostrophe, or you are revealing more about your family than you intended! Punctuation is important :)

Peak pedantry - I love it

Isn't it odd to think that one day, there will be a top post on Hacker News: "Alien Life Discovered on Nearby Planet (430 points)".
That's not how business works.

- Corporate tax vs. individual tax - Deferred tax assets - Sum-of-the-parts valuations - Internal project NPVs > NPV of investments available to an investor

I don't think you can expect to be completely objective/unbiased in this kind of situation...

You mean standards held on banks that are insured/backstopped by the government, have mass-adoption amongst the vast majority of the population, are regulated, and have disclosure requirements through securities regulators?

"Enterprise Value" is one of the legitimate measures of company size, and is defined as market capitalization + net debt.

You can think of this as equivalent to the size of the company because it would be the amount of money you'd need (roughly speaking) to buy the entire company outright.

Unrealized gains on private, illiquid investments are neither earnings, nor cash flow.

Re:Updates from YC on Friday March 08, 2019 @06:55PM (#19343399)
On the contrary - GAAP earnings give the most accurate picture of cold hard cash. That is the reason they exist , and securities regulators are specific about its definition.

Paper gains are notoriously easy to stretch.

I'm reasonably certain that the starting point for public valuations is not the most recent private valuations. These deals are typically centered around public valuation comps (i.e. other similar companies) based off of revenues/EBITDA/etc.
Just an FYI from a native english speaker - sums of money do not use the plural version of the value unit.

i.e. should be "raised $4.4 billion" not "raised $4.4 billions"

I think the other person was talking about quantitative data (e.g. from Google Analytics), not qualitative data from customer conversations / complaints.

Re:$300m in cryptocurrency' accidentally lost forever due to bug on Wednesday November 08, 2017 @10:54AM (#15653619)
This is comical. Anyone who tells you that currency was actually worth $300MM is out of their mind. This is an interesting experiment, but seems more like a pump-and-dump.

Overconfident comes to mind....
For public companies that are covered by equity analysts, converting PP&E to OPEX is typically favorable from a valuation perspective.
You should be aware that there are a number of oil sources that are far more carbon-intensive than the Canadian Oil Sands.

Many of which ship direct to the United States. One is even produced IN the United States (Bakersfield, CA).

On a wells-to-wheels basis, Canadian oil sands are only 6-8% more carbon-intensive than typical light crude (e.g. Saudi), and it comes from a politically-friendly country that supports female rights, human rights in general, and is not bombing their neighbours.

What you say regarding disruption of large areas of wilderness is true when it comes to tailings ponds, but you should also be aware that the vast majority of recent development (and probably most go-forward) is via in-situ extraction that does not require those tailings ponds.

Source: I am a chemical engineer and work directly in this industry.

Re:Bootstrap 4 Beta on Friday August 11, 2017 @09:58AM (#14989702)
Bootstrap is great and I used it on a couple projects. Unfortunately I gave up waiting on a V4 release and started using Semantic UI. This has been a long time coming!

I'll be the first to admit I don't know anything about this company, but that's an interesting change of heart.

The simple act of using/leveraging technology does not a technology company make.

Read this twice, and try not to LOL.

I seem to remember reading about a service almost exactly like this not that long ago (~1 year maybe)? It failed.... Am I going crazy?
This is not done in practice. Be careful getting engineering advice from the Free Dictionary.

> For backend web development Rails is still miles ahead of any Clojure workflow.

I feel the same way. And in my opinion, is a symptom of the "library vs framework" culture that is present in the Clojure community. While that is probably a good stance for the first 2 points in your list, in web development there are just so many already-solved-problems that you have to re-work without a framework.

Luminus looked good but seems to be shunned by the community.
