There was a post recently about suspicion of NIST, specifically from Daniel Bernstein. We also have reason to believe there was funny business around Dual_EC_DRBG.

If NIST really is up to no good on behalf of US intelligence agencies, it's reasonable to believe they'd be doing everything they can to prevent strong post-quantum crypto.

Also, here's an idea I had: let's say you wrapped a plaintext in three different encryption algorithms authored in adversarial countries. Even if you assume all three are backdoored by their creators, you'd have something that could only be unwrapped if the three adversarial countries worked together. Is there anything out there that does this?

So cool, thanks.
This is kind of the plot of the third season of Sword Art Online.

Cool channel, much of it over my head, thanks.
And this is where some of the greatest, most educated minds in computing are going. What a waste.

Could this be used to build a super minimalistic Ben Eater style CPU?
I am surprised that Firefox freely allows access to the clipboard. I'm using Brave and there's an explicit permission for it that is disallowed by default.
Re:Banging Errors in Go on Friday October 20, 2023 @02:53AM (#37953107)
Please no.

Go is designed to be easy to read and easy to write. err != nil is not hard to read. If you don't like the repetition, it simply isn't the language for you. I'm perfectly happy with how Go does it. I do not want the language morphing into another Rust.

2000s kid, I first used something similar to LOGO at school, if you can consider that programming. I initially taught myself programming/scripting by writing Windows batch scripts. Scratch was introduced in my teens at school but by then I was far beyond block programming.

I hated Scratch. I saw it as childish and simplistic. I wanted to play with the big boy stuff.

Re:Linux runtime security agent powered by eBPF on Thursday October 19, 2023 @02:57PM (#37947072)
Shell security is a joke anyway, there's plenty of other things to be cynical about than an install script. Such as how I can elevate privileges on your machine by phishing your password with a fake sudo binary in $PATH.
Re:Self-Checkout Is a Failed Experiment on Wednesday October 18, 2023 @09:26AM (#37928333)
Yeah, I have the same problem, I usually just end up putting everything into my backpack after I've paid. Slows things down.
Re:MI5 head warns of 'epic scale' of Chinese espionage on Wednesday October 18, 2023 @09:17AM (#37928208)
>if China can ctrl c/ctrl v your idea and then pay cheap labour to churn out a clone within a week?

By being protective over our ideas we're admitting that China will do it cheaper and faster than us. Why can't we aim to beat them instead?

Re:MI5 head warns of 'epic scale' of Chinese espionage on Wednesday October 18, 2023 @05:45AM (#37926597)
There's this kind of crab bucket mentality where in the West we feel like we need to be ahead of China no matter what. That's not going to last if all we have is trade secrets keeping us in the lead. Maybe we should get back to innovating. Reduce the amount of red tape and stamp out rent seeking behaviour. UK's economic growth this year is projected to be just 0.5%. China's will be ~5%.

Frankly I have lost faith in our leadership. I really don't see how we can catch up at this point. Might be time to learn some Mandarin.

Re:Ask HN: Do you upvote? Why or why not? on Tuesday October 17, 2023 @01:28PM (#37918473)
I upvote things I agree with and downvote things I disagree with.

Just kidding. I only vote on comments, and pretty rarely.

Re:Tech CEO Sentenced to 5 Years in IP Address Scheme on Tuesday October 17, 2023 @01:21PM (#37918369)
The effort required to make a company IPv6-enabled is not to be underestimated.
>We need to make sure that AI multilingual to avoid total English domination of culture.

Not saying English is an ideal language, but I'm interested in why you think it shouldn't dominate. Wouldn't a universal language be a good thing?

Re:Antibiotic Identified by AI on Tuesday October 17, 2023 @03:51AM (#37911823)
We could easily reduce the risks but we're collectively too lazy to do it. Stop feeding antibiotics to animals, stop giving out strong antibiotics without supervision, sanction third world countries who do not put restrictions on access to antibiotics.
Re:Better HTTP server routing in Go 1.22 on Monday October 16, 2023 @09:51AM (#37899888)
Not a fan either. I want to be sure that routing is going to work at compile time, not at runtime.
Re:YouTube is cracking down on consumers' favorite loophole on Saturday October 14, 2023 @03:29PM (#37883494)
When YouTube stops working with ad blockers, assuming it cannot be circumvented, it will be the end of my YouTube-watching days. I already stopped using Reddit when they killed off Apollo. These companies are doing me a favour by removing these time wasting activities from my life.

I trialed YouTube Music recently, potentially willing to hand over my wallet, but the app is unimpressive.

Re:Fcron Is the Best Cron on Saturday October 14, 2023 @01:01PM (#37882168)
The complaints about systemd timers seem strange. To me, they're a sysadmin's dream to work with. I can see exactly when the last trigger was, when the next one will be, and I can test that the unit will work properly when it fires. And I don't have to remember cron syntax.

As for them not supporting email, if you really need to you can add an OnFailure= to the service unit to send one.

Re:Antarctica: Ice shelves shrinking 'with no sign of recovery on Saturday October 14, 2023 @12:34PM (#37881894)
Under 25 seems a bit young, and I say this as a 22-year-old. There isn't enough life experience there to understand the complexities of the real world.

But we do need younger people in politics. UK parliament is overwhelmingly old, rich, eurosceptic people. Funny how there's no diversity where it really matters.

Re:Apple Bricked my AirPods and now wants me to buy new ones on Friday October 13, 2023 @02:35AM (#37867454)
That "Not Yours" in the screenshot cracks me up for some reason. Feels like it's saying "Hey, give them back asshole!"
Re:Can't Be Fucked: Underrated Cause of Tech Debt on Thursday October 12, 2023 @01:42PM (#37860370)
There is also a huge portion of programmers who want to be on an assembly line. They don't care about their profession, they don't strive to improve at their craft, they don't read stuff on HN. They're simply there for the money. Since quality requires active effort in software, I think this group has an oversized responsibility for tech debt.

Case in point: frontend and the shit show that's become.

I wondered if the vaccine flu symptoms might've created congestion in your middle ear but sounds like it didn't.

Perhaps you could do an experiment on yourself with the supplement to figure out if it's really having an effect or just placebo.

Re:Telegram Reveals Remote IP Address When Answering Calls on Thursday October 12, 2023 @02:19AM (#37854015)
If you want to show something like this off it would be more appropriate as a Show HN since there isn't anything novel here.
Re:Telegram Reveals Remote IP Address When Answering Calls on Thursday October 12, 2023 @02:18AM (#37854000)
Meh, with NAT and CGNAT you're only going to get a rough idea. Lot of people using VPNs now too.
Re:Unix Structured Concurrency on Thursday October 12, 2023 @02:10AM (#37853964)
>Well for one thing, the child process could handle sighup

I've come across programs that use SIGHUP for various things like config reloading when they could use USR1/USR2 instead. UNIX signals are kind of crap in my opinion. USR1/USR2 should probably not even exist, there should be some other way to 'message' processes without IPC.

Did you have flu symptoms after the vaccine? How often do you usually get ill?
Well, human hearing ranges from 20Hz to 20kHz.
I'll use this thread as an opportunity to say this: if you ever have sudden hearing loss in one or both ears, seek immediate medical attention. Demand a proper consultation and don't take "give it a few weeks" as an answer from a GP.

Sudden hearing loss can be reversed with prompt steroid injections but if it's left then it will become permanent. My mother woke up one day with no hearing in one ear. Unfortunately, by the time she got a proper diagnosis it was too late to do anything about it. Since then she's had tinnitus and vertigo to go with it.
