CEOs will make AI drive into the office for culture.

Knowledge workers are safe until FSD.

It’s just 90 minutes of hunting and then dying of dysentery.
Re:GPT-4o on Monday May 13, 2024 @03:27PM (#40347283)
It doesn't have hands.
Cool. Let me work remote.
Let the free market figure it out? Uber, Lyft, etc.
Re:Most Londoners would quit before they give up working from home on Wednesday February 15, 2023 @02:00PM (#34808848)
"I have no feeling nor connection towards those remote employees." Fun fact: You can engage with remote employees with the click of a button. Convenient indeed!

"where you are replaceable, transactional human resource, using other humans transactionally as resources"

So in your view, remote work is saying the quiet part out loud.

Great, now we can drop the charade. Except now, remote workers get some modicum of enjoyment from the transaction. At the expense of "culture", "where in this together", and "when you're here, you're family". (Do gorillas deliver Olive Garden?)

Re:Engineers enhance cannabis strain with 20% more THC on Tuesday May 31, 2022 @02:16PM (#31572921)
Totally agree. I'm looking for the Michelob Ultra of weed.
So did I. I don't want others to have to go through with it. The lesson will be others will have money to spend on other things that will be more beneficial to me in the long run.
Re:Apple Watch Series 7 on Tuesday September 14, 2021 @03:59PM (#28530232)
Does anyone use their Apple Watch for golf? I'm thinking of gettin the 7, but was wondering how good the GPS is that sort of thing.
Re:Norm Macdonald has died on Tuesday September 14, 2021 @03:29PM (#28529810)
Damn. Always enjoyed his work. I especially like this moment from Conan. Seeing him in the zone.

I have an antenna as well. I was really hoping my NBC affiliate would use their other broadcast channels (4.1, 4.2, 4.3, etc) to show other Olympic sports. The promise of digital broadcasting. Nope, just more reruns from the 1980s.
Lock downs didn’t last that long. By the time the second wave hit, everything besides large in person gatherings wetback to normal. At least in the mid west.
Re:The Joy of Fuck-You Money (2018) on Thursday March 11, 2021 @01:51PM (#26427558)
Not only that, but maybe people closer to retirement would take it earlier and not wait for Medicare to turn on. Opening up positions for the next wave of folks.
Re:2021 will demand new kinds of video conferencing on Monday January 11, 2021 @01:25PM (#25733368)
Because many people will remain WFH even after the vaccine rollout. Video conferencing will be essential to connect those that go into the office with those who don't, especially during mixed in person/remote meetings.
Boys will be boys. Shucks they didn't mean nothing by it. Just blowing off steam. Don't blow it out of proportion....

Did I miss any?

"Some people are saying" it wasn't even really people. It was a performance art piece to get "real Americans" in trouble.

Give me a break. The people that participated in this are deplorable.

At their perceived oppression. In reality, they still hold all the cards.
My guess is that there is political power in employing a lot of people.
Re:Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0 on Thursday July 30, 2020 @11:17AM (#23999147)
Without paying customers there is no job. UBI allows people to become those customers.
Re:Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0 on Thursday July 30, 2020 @10:56AM (#23998905)
As for 1, I view it as a mutualistic relationship. Those who don't depend on UBI to live, depend on those who do to spend.
Re:Ask HN: Which book helped you understand the world? on Thursday July 16, 2020 @10:16AM (#23859196)
A People’s History of the United States. It opened my eyes to a past I didn’t know existed, which helps me understand the present.
Re:First all-electric seaplane takes flight in B.C. on Wednesday December 11, 2019 @02:21PM (#21765784)
Off topic and stupid, but could an electric plane be outfitted with lightning rods and/or lightning rockets to attract lightning strikes in order to charge the batteries?
Re:Let's build houses for people, not cars on Tuesday August 27, 2019 @02:16PM (#20812790)
It seems like a perfect opportunity to let the free market solve the last mile problem.
Re:U.S. Significantly Weakens Endangered Species Act on Tuesday August 13, 2019 @04:52PM (#20690118)
Another reason I've heard from some conservatives is that God created the earth and animals for mankind to use as he sees fit. If animals go extinct, so be it. The Lord works in mysterious ways.
Viewpoint diversity? Republican/conservative seems to be the default state in most corporations.
Re:Three-day no-meeting schedule for engineers on Thursday May 03, 2018 @12:51PM (#16987596)
I prefer work from home, but I agree with you, there should be options. As long as the option chosen has no effect at all on career advancement.

I think you're right. Swipe up to go home is fine, but swipe up and pause for multitasking is going to be a pain to explain to my parents.
Re:How do self-taught developers get jobs? (2016) on Sunday May 14, 2017 @09:52PM (#14338603)
What does a developers portfolio entail? I'm a motion graphic designer and when I apply for jobs I send a demo reel of my work. Which is a 1 minute video with snippets of my best stuff set to music. Is there something similar developers send along with resumes?
