After every such story I see, I subscribe one more person to Mullvad.
Re:Better Auth is joining Vercel on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @05:32PM (#48824146)
Sucks. Now I have to look for alternatives.
I don't think that's an alternative to US hyperscalers. Scaleway is the closest thing there is. Replacing a single service with 10 others is not really an alternative in my opinion.
ClouDNS is probably the most popular one.
> They don’t want to actively police the internet

They do and they've done so in the past. They are just more okay with some illegal stuff than others.

Because cloudflare is and always has been a bad actor. They protect all sorts of illegal stuff.
Re:Bulgaria joins euro area from 1 January on Friday January 02, 2026 @05:36PM (#46470338)
They had a referendum for that?
Re:Bulgaria joins euro area from 1 January on Thursday January 01, 2026 @03:47PM (#46457856)
Did they agree? I've read at least one news article in the past 2 years talking about a referendum.
Re:OpenWorkers: Self-Hosted Cloudflare Workers in Rust on Thursday January 01, 2026 @12:54PM (#46456233)
Isn't the whole point of Cloudflare's Workers to pay per function? If it is self-hosted, you must dedicate hardware in advance, even if it's rented in the cloud.
I get the point. But those are incomparable. Hyperscalers don't compete on price, they compete on scale and services offered. The compliance, the security, the support, the integrations, the backups.

Can you host your own object storage open source software, key vault OSS, VPN, queue service, container registry, logging, host your own Postgres/MySQL? Sure, but you will need to research what is best, what is supported, keep it maintained, make sure to update it and that those updates don't break anything, wake up in the middle of the night when it breaks, make sure it's secure. And you would still need to handle access control across those services. And you would still need a 3rd party service for DDoS protection, likely CDN too. And you would likely need some identity provider.

They have it on their website + the version 2 which has reflective protection + a backlight and is also in 24 inches.
It still seems to require a browser to use. But sure, I guess it's easier to start with.
Setting aside the obvious privacy issues with de-anonymizing everyone, it's great to limit kids' access to media for adults.
Re:200k Flemish drivers can turn traffic lights green on Monday July 28, 2025 @11:22AM (#44711754)
Lmao, an app.
https://msty.app (cross-platform) and https://chorus.sh (Mac only) do that though they are both a desktop app rather than a service. Arguably better than putting your API key somewhere online in my opinion.
Is Poe pay per use or a subscription? I don't want to sign up just to find out.
Is it pay per use?
Re:NuxtLabs is joining Vercel on Thursday July 10, 2025 @12:59PM (#44523057)
It's platform agnostic but Vercel is the only one that supports it? At least that's in the docs I linked.
Re:NuxtLabs is joining Vercel on Thursday July 10, 2025 @01:24AM (#44517545)
> has that happened with Svelte?

Yes. There are features that have been deliberately kept on the platform level to force you to use the platform instead of implementing it on the framework level or guiding you through it with the docs.

Re:A single line of code cost $8000 on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @03:41AM (#43829686)
I'll let my employer know to update my salary or reduce my workload.
Sounds like a necessary change to send a message. I find it normal that when you go somewhere, you adapt and learn the language. You shouldn't expect other to adapt to you.
Then call it a new term. Don't change the definition of existing words. An open door isn't an invitation to change it, or to use it for free. It's just an open door and you can look inside.
I don't really mind whether it fits someone else's definition really.
I coined it today to mean something else. There is no reason to take someone's meaning of a word for gospel.
Again with the pointless discussion about what the "widely regarded definition of open source" is. The source is there. That's it.
Re:A love letter to the CSV format on Thursday March 27, 2025 @02:04PM (#43496213)
I was recently writing a parser for a weird CSV. It had multiple header column rows in it as well as other header rows indicating a folder.
Isn't SQLite known for being bad for write-heavy use cases?
Great if that's the case. I am no fan of WhatsApp and I do think we should use and encourage more European tech but I don't think how important that is has changed recently.
Re:Reviewing the Cryptography Used by Signal on Sunday February 23, 2025 @01:20PM (#43151612)
I was about to agree with your second point but after checking out the latest posts, it seems about 80% of the last 20 or 30 are about tech.
