How did you degoogle Android?
Re:Ask HN: Do you still use Search Engines? on Thursday April 10, 2025 @06:50AM (#43642637)
I use search engine for 2 purpose and not sure if its a common practice across.

Specific search expecting 1 answer. These type search is enhanced by ChatGPT. Google is losing here.

Wild goose chase / brainstorming. For this, I need a broad set of answers. I am looking for a radically different solution. Here, today's Google is inferior to the OG Google. That is for 2 reasons.

1. SEOs have screwed up the results. A famous culprit is pinterest and many other irrelevant site that fill the first couple of pages.

2. Self-sensoring & shadow banning. Banning of torrent sites, politically motivated manipulation. Though the topic I am searching is not political, there is some issue with the result. I can see the difference when I try the same in Bing or DuckDuckGo.

Re:Ask HN: Where do you host your own-domain email? on Thursday November 23, 2023 @10:44AM (#38393979)
I have personally used fastmail and I am happy.

I have personally felt Microsoft/Outlook service is better than Gmail. I have a couple of clients in shipping business, and they had issues with Gmail. Moved them to Outlook in 2018 and they are still happy.

Of recently, I have suggested Zoho to some clients. Its been good.

Re:Ask HN: Best monitor for a MacBook Pro for ~US$700? on Thursday November 23, 2023 @10:27AM (#38393747)
Do you know about which series or detail to look for in LG?

My friend saw an LG monitor and took down its model number. He missed that one the alphabet in the model was different (example 29ABC600-XYZ, but he got 29ABD600-XYZ - "D" instead of "C") and that made a huge difference.

Re:Ask HN: Best monitor for a MacBook Pro for ~US$700? on Thursday November 23, 2023 @10:25AM (#38393717)
If you are continuing your nomadic lifestyle, you might want to consider getting an iPad that can double as an external display via sidecar app. Of course, I am aware of the small size and crossing your budget. Or you might consider portable monitors.

FYI, Please be careful with LG monitors. Just an alphabet change in the model makes a huge difference. My friend saw an LG monitor and took down its model number. He missed that one the alphabet in the model was different (example 29ABC600-XYZ, but he got 29ABD600-XYZ - "D" instead of "C") and that made a huge difference.

Re:iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @08:05AM (#37495613)
I don't get the logic of removing the mute toggle switch. It is very convenient to put the phone in silent. Didn't have to open the phone. Plus it was easy to check if the phone was silent by just looking for the orange marker. They should have first turned the volume buttons to action button. I dont use the volume button.

One thing weird of Android tablets, it's so under underpowered (during the Nexus 7 era). Only recently after m1 ipads, I see good spec tablets coming out.

I like how the Pixel tablets has a charging dock that doubles as a speaker.

Would be cooler if the charging dock has a better graphics card that can be connected to a monitor, mouse & keyboard and turned into a desktop setup.

nelsoch (OP), please don't be offended by what I am about to say, I don't intent to offend you. I am just sharing a valuable advice I received for everyone in this boat.

When I was at my first job, I too went way beyond my scope of job descriptions and did many things. Everyone appriciated me and I felt I was a vital part of the company. That is when my new manager gave this advice. Though that the time, I was annoyed by him and felt he was a pain in the ass. I was too young and stupid to understand what he was telling, so he just forced me to comply. Which, in the end, helped me a lot.

I had to fill an excel sheet of all the things I did and forward to my supervisor. I only filled what was my job and didn't put in the extra things. The manager asked why I was not informing the company of what I was actually doing in the company. The manager said that I was not giving enough focus on the work I was hired to do and doing other things. Though, my supervisor was very happy with my job.

Then I started begrudgingly (curing my manager) filling everything I did in the company. Again I was called by the manager for not fully reporting what I was doing. When I showed, that filled everything. It turned out my supervisor was deleting the extra stuff I was putting in. That is when I realized that my supervisor was just praising me. But didn't report this to the manager.

So, I just stopped doing other things and just did my work and avoided anything that was beyond my description. Then I started getting official email asking me to do extra things and started getting "certificate of appreciation". That lead me to getting extra pay and bonus. My increments were also higher, and I got promoted too.

Then, when I moved to other companies, I just stuck to my job description and didn't do anything more. I set the tone from my interview. Whenever I was asked to do anything extra, I always bargained for what I was going to get for the extra work. I made sure that extra expenses (like petrol, road toll & parking charges for travel) were compensated, and I got extra time off.

Basically, I understood that only when the company was paying for my extra services, did they appreciate it.

Management always value you based on how much they are paying you for your services. They are not going to asking around and see how much you contribute.

What did you learn? What framework did you build your app on? Where did you host it?

Having achieved all this. Anything you wish you has done different - like learn some other course or use some other framework. Something you feel is the wrong path to take and must be avoided at all cost?

Pls explain how you did that. I would like to try it for myself.
Re:Quiet Quitting Is a Fake Trend on Saturday September 17, 2022 @09:38AM (#32877454)
My understanding of this whole "Quite Quitting" saga is that it's just burnout coupled with anxiety - that has effected the masses.

Before the 2020 shit storm, some had burnout, while some others had anxiety. The effected percentage was in the single digits. But now over 75% are affected by a combination of both.

I think that we have to accept that the world has changed. The way we function has changed.

Think about the days before internet and mobile.

If I just moved away from a friend that I went to a public place with lots of people, I had to find a pay phone and leave a message at my friend's answering machine at home, telling where to meet and go to the meeting spot and wait hoping that my friend has to call his home and listened to his saved message.

Just imagine that one fine day, the whole earths population get a mobile phone and is connected to the internet in just 24 hrs - the whole population of earth.

Think of all the radical changes we need to make to our lives. Tear down all payphones, shut down the answering machine making companies. This is just a very narrow example. Think how it will scale.

Everyone is struggling to make sense of this new world and their place in it - every human being. Those humans include the employees, managers and owners. All are struggling, and all are trying to make sense of the mess and how to move on.

So instead of blaming each other and shifting the blame, work together.

This is my take of "quite quitting". People are just preoccupied dealing with burnout & anxiety. Not focusing 100% at work.

I would like to know anyone else agrees with me and would really love to hear from the ones that don't agree with me.

Re:FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes on Tuesday July 05, 2022 @08:14AM (#31987266)
I never understood the logic behind companies abandoning their own data centers and moving their gold (Data is the new gold) into somebody else hand. I see that many here are also thinking in the same line.

But when I spoke to a CTO of a F500 company. This was the take he had. He feels one of the major driving force is to reduce the carbon foot print of the company. His company is designing the system to have the crucial data on their own infrastructure but keep they other data & do the processing of cloud service. Instead of relying on 1 provider, they are using multiple. Also supporting some small local cloud providers.

This seems very relevant for a logistics company with a huge of fleet of air craft. Especially considering the upcoming carbon tax.

Why not add a spell checker & word counter?
Re:Ask HN: What are the Android apps you can't live without? on Saturday March 05, 2022 @12:23PM (#30569543)
I know it sounds silly, but I cannot use my device without this app & even wish apple also has similar feature for iphones.

Nokia's Z Launcher. 2 main features. Showing frequently used app & just [scribble the name of the app to open it](https://i.imgur.com/PNCx5qB.jpg) or a contact.

Sadly Nokia ditched it & no one else seems to have that 2 features.

Re:Nothing is more dangerous than a well-read dictator on Monday February 21, 2022 @04:04AM (#30413475)
The whole culture is just another form of Dictatorship.

My definition of dictatorship is when the majority have a view and its forbidden to even dissection the idea to further understand it - let alone question it. Humanity progresses when we evolve in our views & thoughts for a valid logical reasoning and not just for the "heck of it" or "its the progressive thing to do".

A really devious Dictator will make the subjects feel that its their own decision. A polite dictatorship is a cult.

> - The "lie-flat" movement massively picks up.

This is a serious symptom that is being swept under the rug. Efforts needs to be put in to better understand the issue and enforce steps to resolve it.

I lack the basic training in trying to understand the issue - sociology, psychology or whatever is the relevant field. But I feel that "lie-flat" is just an acute variant of the general issue - "checking out of reality". The other versions are "staying in echo chambers" and being incapable of even listening to different views. "Getting lost in other worlds" - the gamers that spend whole day in games like Fortnite or always flipping through videos in tik tok.

I really miss G Talk, it was such a simple & light app and it just worked.

But I think the reason why Google didn't keep it is because there is no way to insert ads into it.

This is the main part about Google that we have to understand - Google is an ads distribution company. Like a billboard company or the company that plasters ads on bus stands & public benches. Any product they have will have a place to serve ads.

Serving ads in Gmail was a bad idea, but they have a nice user base. So, now they are offering it as a service that you pay for. I hope they come back to that.

Your google id needs to be used as an id instead of relying on mobile phone numbers.

I hope they bring back G Talk.

The issue with meet is the hassle of sharing the code with everyone. They should just have the option of a friends list.

Re:I refuse to let Amazon define Rust on Monday September 13, 2021 @12:36PM (#28513559)
What is the issue with Mozilla being the patron of Rust? They are managing the Firefox project well.

Would it be better if Rust was a part of the Apache foundation?

Re:I refuse to let Amazon define Rust on Monday September 13, 2021 @12:34PM (#28513540)
What is the issue?

Companies & languages, the only issue I am aware of is Oracle suing Google over the use of Java. Are they concern that Amazon will sue the users of Rust language?

Re:Intuit in Talks to Buy Mailchimp for More Than $10B on Thursday September 02, 2021 @12:41AM (#28388717)
There was a time that Microsoft was trying to buy Intuit but fell through due to US Justice department. Since then, there has been many "synergies" & partnerships between both.

I don't see why Intuit needs Mailchimp but I can see Microsoft needing Mailchimp.

I feel that the software products & services that Samsung builds is half-baked. It might be a pressure tactic to ensure Google keeps paying.

Also, I am wonder what happened of Samsung & Microsoft plans of Samsung shelving its app & services for Microsoft. I feel that was the "real motivation" for Google to start paying.

Google needs to be challenged for an improvement in Android space. They should stop rushing in half baked stuff and instead work on releasing reliable & well tested products.

As a person that actively used android, iOS, Linux, Windows & Mac, Apple's stuffs just work and it's high time the competition catches up.

As for Android, we need to have flavour / custom ROMs that is 100% degoogled and with proper alternatives. Ubuntu, Microsoft & LinageOS all need to up their game and get more people involved.

Re:Ask HN: Alternative to Paid Gmail with Support? on Friday July 09, 2021 @07:52AM (#27782731)
Please do consider fastmail.com.

I am no email expert or in anyway related to the company.

It was taken over by Opera onetime, but it was bought back by the employees. So, Fastmail is a company owned by employees of Fastmail. I like that concept, so I am just promoting it.

Do check it out and give them a try. I am curious to know your feedback, so please do share.

nice concept
Re:Fastmail accounts blocked in Russia, here's what we know on Wednesday June 09, 2021 @01:39PM (#27450774)
In another discussion somewhere on the internet, someone mentioned using a service but I could not find any details and the person didn't reply.

The service is to send & receive email. But the storage capacity was less and the service only has a imap & smtp address and no webmail. Basically the service focuses on ensuring the emails are sent & received. The person has a webserver hosted at home that copies the emails from that server and incase of sending email, sends via that server. Then all the content of the home server is backed up at some off-site backup service.

Any idea which is the services being used and how would such a system be rated? It sounds like you are doing something similiar.

Re:Is that ship still stuck? on Friday March 26, 2021 @02:40AM (#26589377)
n00b question: how tough is to steer the ship through the canal? Is this a silly mistake or a genuine mistake? Will the Captain of the ship get fined? Who will foot the bill of this whole rescue operation? Also, how much extra cost & days will it take for a ship to take the other (longer) route?
No, first the towers in Punjab were attacked and when the company refused to replace the tower and cut service. The towers in Delhi was also attacked as protest. Jio is demanding compensation to replace the towers.

It's no cheap to replace a tower and someone has to pay up. The Govt has declined to pay for the tower. The protestors have blamed it on some rouge elements that infiltrated the protest. Some towers were managed by ZTE or some related Chinese entity that is also stuck in a limbo due to the Chinese ban and now they are seeking compensation for damaged towers as a way to recoupe their investments. Which is another reason why Govt wants to break this trend of paying for towers damaged by the protesters.

Ofcourse, none of this news can be authenticated. There are also claims that cell service was blocked in Delhi for the protestors as retaliation for destroying the towers in Punjab by the protestors. As the towers damaged in Delhi seems to collateral to the protest commotions rather than targeted attacks and less in numbers.

> Once the mandis are gone

Where are the mandis going? If they are non-competitive, they are out. But if they lose their non-sense and compete, they can be around. Also, the people working at the Mandis (Mandi employees), they are also free to start their own company that compete with the Mandis.

> what prevents a monopolized market from then strong-arming farmers into bad deals? This law, which prevents monolopy. The current monopoly is the Mandi. How will be farmers be strong-armed to a bad deal if they have options to choose?

> This is factually incorrect.

My mistake, "But can ONLY sell the produce to the local Mandi at some states". Punjab is an example of were Mandis have complete power. While in other states like TN, Bihar, MP, UP and more have already changed the rule.

> Only about 30% of produce is sold in mandis.

that is a bit misleading as Mandis dont have prominence is all states. But in Punjab where they are there, no one is allowed.
