Re:What is going on with ceiling fans on Monday October 05, 2026 @04:27PM (#49970211)
I didn’t realize it was so controversial. Indeed, I have a set of CFL from around 2010 that have about 30 second warm up to full brightness; they look just right behind their lamp shades. I tried replacing these once with LED and the light kind of pierced through the shades and looked harsh.

Huh, I actually liked CFL and the quality of light they produced.

No one actually believes you if you say that. Even if it is true.
Re:An Embedded Linux on a Single Floppy on Sunday June 21, 2026 @10:30PM (#48624932)
I wonder why the 486 DX is supported but not the SX. How is the math coprocessing unit necessary for kernel and basic system tools?
Re:Tim Cook Is Leaving. Good on Monday April 27, 2026 @11:44AM (#47923118)
I understand it, but I am not the majority Apple user.
Re:Tim Cook Is Leaving. Good on Monday April 27, 2026 @09:43AM (#47921465)
This author misses the point because he is a geek. Ordinary users love Apple and do not care about these issues. Ordinary users throw money at Apple. Apple has some bugs to fix but overall the product is good, and that’s why they keep raking in cash. Saying good riddance to Tim Cook because of the system preference pane, among other trivial things (to most people), is simply misunderstanding business.
Re:Email could have been X.400 times better on Saturday April 25, 2026 @06:57AM (#47900425)
And still, ITU modem standards and T.30 … yes, fax still lives!
Re:IPv6 address, as a sentence you can remember on Wednesday April 01, 2026 @09:40PM (#47609041)
The new times take now beneath the new time while new times take the new year.

Or more concisely, localhost.

Brings to mind boom box punk from Star Trek 4. Flight attendants should be allowed to Vulcan-nerve-pinch.

Will not pass muster with FCC. Know Your Customer regulations require the company to … know the customer. They will not last.
Re:Can you slim macOS down? on Wednesday January 21, 2026 @04:26PM (#46711798)
I’m more of an arse than a tool.
Re:Can you slim macOS down? on Wednesday January 21, 2026 @02:06PM (#46710028)
Don’t read the comments. Author responds like a tool.
Re:XMPP and Metadata on Monday January 12, 2026 @06:46AM (#46587139)
I always liked XMPP and SIP as messaging protocols. So easy to read and understand and implement. Both are extensible and can be made secure.
Life with young children is actually mostly dreary and stressful; the fun and excitement and reliving of childhood memories is 1% or less of life, in my experience. By time I realize I am having that <1% experience it is over. I still feel as though I am chasing after something vanishing and never catching it.
Re:How I block all online ads on Sunday December 07, 2025 @08:27PM (#46187286)
NextDNS is sufficient on its own. $20 for a year of no ads (or smut if you want to block that too).

JGC has star status here.
French is one of Canada’s. It’s generally spoken poorly in Vancouver.
Re:Making the most of a dumb fax switcher box in the old days on Friday September 05, 2025 @10:14AM (#45138851)
In case you think fax is now ancient history, there are tens of millions of faxes still crossing the PSTN every day. Fax is alive and well!
Re:Show HN: NextDNS Adds "Bypass Age Verification" on Sunday August 17, 2025 @09:51PM (#44936635)
As a subscriber of NextDNS I say, first, this is cool, but second, don’t do it. I don’t want NextDNS to face some sort of judgment that will get it shut down. Just publish the “DNS tricks” so that people can DIY but don’t make it part of your service.

Re:Show HN: I reinvented PHP in TypeScript (demo) on Monday May 19, 2025 @10:06AM (#44030086)
This project is cool but the author seems to have never actually touched PHP that he compares it to.
Re:DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data on Thursday February 20, 2025 @10:37AM (#43115973)
Musk would have liked to be the US president but can’t because he’s South African.

So he conned the stupidest but most powerful man alive into letting him be acting president.

Re:The Case of the Missing Increment on Tuesday October 01, 2024 @07:21AM (#41706944)
Deep thoughts: why aren’t “increment” and “excrement” opposites?
Re:James Earl Jones has died on Monday September 09, 2024 @06:23PM (#41494797)
Or “Bell Atlantic”
Re:"SRE" doesn't seem to mean anything useful any more on Wednesday September 04, 2024 @07:55AM (#41444607)
Yet she keeps calling ops people “monkeys.”
What’s the relevance of this question?
There’s a lot of good to say about AI but there are a lot of us who just enjoy humanity a lot more than AI and other automation. I like talking to people on the phone, going through staffed checkout lines, and reading real articles and comments on the web. I’m human and I want to interact with other humans. I’m not the only one.

Thankfully, the blog’s comments section was still open so that you could pollute it with your smug pedantry.
