Its all a bit hand wavy nonsense. Own a physical copy? How long until its unplayable because either the media corrupts or the player isn't available? The only real "ownership" is the IP, everything else is just renting.
I might argue that we already have data centers, we just call then Colo Facilities.
Re:Building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @01:43PM (#48479917)
I remember when YouTube implemented a new html player and suddenly, unexpectedly, they had all the is traffic coming from rural Africa. Size matters.
I don't see the return of measles to be a success.
Thats a pretty snarky thing to say about Apple. They were arguably the pioneers in OS UX... granted, its not the end all, be all, but still. You could do worse.
Re:Todd C. Miller – Sudo maintainer for over 30 years on Monday February 02, 2026 @03:19PM (#46860870)
Because environments change, it hasn't been immutable.
Zuckerberg as generational representative made my millennial and Gen Z kids lol
I'm very curious what happens to that money. I very much doubt any of the actual victims will see it.
It would be nice if some politicians/media outlets didn't subvert or misrepresent science for their own gains. Yet here we are.

One of my CS professors told the story about when MCSFT demonstrated their implementation of the Korn shell at a USENIX conference. Gasbag on stage tells the guy in the question line that he (questioner) has misinterpreted something in the software's original intention. Gasbag figures out something is up when half the room cracked up. The guy at the mic was David Korn, author of the Korn shell.

I can’t decide if I want to hear the Douglas Adams interview, his passing still makes me sad.
I can’t wrap my head around how that hat drops in a straight line. Between the propeller and any wind, how is that hat not all over the place?
Re:Finding New Pastures: Big Nerd Ranch's Next Chapter on Saturday June 15, 2024 @09:17PM (#40693958)
I took a bootcamp with them many many years ago and have to agree it was one of the better training experiences. Best wishes on your next chapter.
While I don’t necessarily agree with the NYT, I fail to see how or why LLMs are entitled to consume other peoples work for their own material gain.
Re:In 2024, please switch to Firefox on Friday December 29, 2023 @12:28PM (#38807652)
I had to stop using Safari for development when I discovered the cache wasn’t clearing, even when I asked it to. That was a few years ago, and frankly, I’ve never looked back.
Re:In 2024, please switch to Firefox on Friday December 29, 2023 @12:26PM (#38807615)
I’m online a lot and I go to a lot of different websites. I believe people when they say they’ve had issues with Firefox, but personally this is never been an issue I’ve only had to turn off ublock a few times over several years.
Re:In 2024, please switch to Firefox on Friday December 29, 2023 @12:24PM (#38807577)
If you want an experience that includes privacy violations, knock yourself out. Personally, as an end user, that is exactly what I don’t want, which is why I use Firefox
Re:Why Prusa is floundering, and how you can avoid their fate on Tuesday December 26, 2023 @09:27AM (#38772018)
I just got a Qidi which appears, but I could be mistaken, to be using a licensed version of Prusas software.
Re:Google Chrome will limit ad blockers starting June 2024 on Tuesday November 21, 2023 @04:33PM (#38370544)
My impression is that security people already consider Chrome a "virus" application. This is just one more nail the coffin for anyone who cares about such things. (To be clear, people should care)
Re:A Coder Considers the Waning Days of the Craft on Tuesday November 14, 2023 @01:27PM (#38267359)
I tested out GPT-4 the other day and asked it to generate a simple two boxes in a row using Tailwind and hilariously, the resulting code actually crashed my browser tab. I reviewed the code and it was really basic, so this shouldn't have happened at all. But it consistently crashed every time. I'm still not entirely sure what happened, maybe an invisible character or something, I think its more funny than anything else.
Re:The Best Timed Shot in TV History (Probably) on Tuesday November 14, 2023 @01:20PM (#38267241)
If you look on YouTube, you can find up-res versions of Mitchell and Webb that look amazing compare to other sources. Maybe the same technique can be used on Connections
Re:Ask HN: Why has no one replaced Ticketmaster? on Saturday October 21, 2023 @10:07AM (#37966881)
I personally decided not to buy tickets for any event that costs more than $100. There are so many local artists, small music events, and community theatre that are delightful that I ve come to the conclusion that Ticketmaster can go screw itself.
Re:Trek, a Classic Game for DOS on Saturday October 14, 2023 @01:07PM (#37882239)
One of the first games I ever played. My mom was a secretary at a local University and the computer lab manager set 15 (1978-79) year old me up at a paper printing PDP terminal and cut me loose. I would take the paper printouts home and pour over them.
Re:Richard Scarry Collection: Archive.org on Tuesday August 08, 2023 @05:32AM (#37046518)
I was recently in Istanbul and I’m always reminded of Scarry when I watch the traffic going over the Bosporus. So many ships, bridges, etc.
Re:Kevin Mitnick has died on Thursday July 20, 2023 @02:19PM (#36804491)
I was once asked by Target for my SSN because I was returning a product. That was in the early 2000s

Re:React is 10 years old on Tuesday May 30, 2023 @11:59AM (#36126414)
This is such a common problem these days. I have almost 15 years of experience with another framework, but the latest iteration is almost a complete re-write and most of what I knew in the past isn't that helpful. To say I have "x" years of experience doesn't really acknowledge my current level of understanding.
My Home button always works. Frankly, there’s so much content that I just move on if the service pisses me off.
