Re:Socialism and the Harrison Bergeron Problem on Sunday November 01, 2026 @04:33AM (#50323938)
Socialism doesn't fail because of human nature. That's hate speech that leads to genocide due to blaming innocent people for the unavoidable failure of socialism.

Socialism fails because it is fundamentally wrong about profits and free-market prices.

A profit in the free market is philanthropy because you make a profit by giving other people more valuable things than what you take from other people. That's what money was invented for: to signal who helped other people and deserved to be helped back.

For example, you take wood from the market, harming society, which no longer has access to that wood. But then you turn the wood into a chair and sell the chair.

You make a profit if the chair is more valuable than the wood.

When you harm society, you lose money, like the money you pay for the wood. When you help society, you gain money, like the money you get paid when selling the chair.

So a profit in the free market is the measure of the net poverty of OTHER PEOPLE that you have reduced.

This is possible because value is subjective: the value of things is independent of the cost of production.

Instead, socialists believe that the value of things is the cost of production. It's called the labor theory of value.

If things were worth the cost of production, an inefficient machine that produced the same good but consumed double the energy would produce double the value, and machines should be as wasteful as possible.

Under the socialist theory of value, it is not possible to decide how to allocate resources because no matter what you decide to use the resources for, it's always the same cost.

Instead, capitalism, by trying to maximize profits, tries to convert the least costly resources into the most valuable products, and profit is the measure of the good done to society.

But profits are the very thing that socialists try to destroy the most. If somebody is helping society the most, it's by making high profits. But then socialists punish the best actor by taxing him, killing the best assignment of resources.

Also, socialists cannot know the value of things because they are always trying to distort prices. For that reason, they cannot know the cost of anything or the value of the goods produced.

If bread is the most needed thing, it is expensive because it is the most valuable. Being expensive makes the bread makers profit more, so they can take more and more resources from society to make even more bread. But then socialists limit the price of bread because "bread is too important." So the bread makers cannot profit more and increase production because the cake makers take the floor, since they had not been limited in price because cake is less needed than bread. Capping the price of bread leads to a fall in bread production and an increase in cake production.

Under distorted prices, taxes, price capping and regulation, it is not possible to decide what to produce, with what quality, using what resources, or whether to save today or consume tomorrow. Nor is it possible to identify the bottlenecks of production.

Is bread expensive because of a lack of wheat, because producing cake is more valuable than producing bread, or because there is a shortage of transport trucks or chemical plants to manufacture the packaging?

Under socialism, it is impossible to find the answer.

How unfortunate it is to be stuck on a paradisiacal island.

The game Crysis was inspired by one of those islands. Instead of complaining, she should be setting herself to invisible mode and running around shooting Koreans.

Modern CPUs have hundreds of megabytes of cache. That's more than the entire hard disk space required by Windows in the 1990s.

You could install an entire Windows system, emulated in cache of a modern CPU, including the hard disk, and modern computers are still slow, partly because the CPU does nothing while waiting for RAM to fetch data, and partly because decades of people prioritizing abstractions over efficient coding have made software totally inefficient.

Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:34AM (#50323205)
Mao Zedong wrote "On Contradiction" (1937), a cornerstone of Marxist-Leninist philosophy and Maoism. Its core concepts include:

The Basic Law of Dialectics

Unity of Opposites: Mao argued that "the law of contradiction in things, or the unity of opposites, is the basic law of dailectical amterialism".

Meanwhile, Lenin included "On the Question of Dialectics" (1915) in his "Philosophical Notebooks", Volume 38 of his Collected Works:

there, in "The Essence of Dialectics" Lenin stated that "Dialectics in the proper sense is the study of contradiction in the very essence of objects" and called the unity of opposites "the core of dialectics".

In "The Splitting in Two", Lenin defined dialectics as "the splitting in two of a single whole and the cognition of its contradictory parts."

One consequence of Marxism being a religion was Lysenkoism, a pseudoscientific political campaign that rejected genetics and Darwinian natural selection in favor of the superstitious belief that organisms can "learn" from his environment, "evolve" and pass new traits acquired on to their offspring.

It led to attempts to produce food by making one species of seed grow in the snow and transform into other plant species, expecting weeds to become nutritious cereals.

Anyone who opposed this Marxist magical thinking was executed. Lysenkoism just caused crop failures and famine, in which millions of people died. It was the ideological belief that willpower could change reality.

Mao did something similar, killing millions after a superstitious management of agriculture in communist China.

Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:14AM (#50323125)
Yes, it's Marxists who define Marxism as "dialectical materialism," not their enemies.

Gnosticism is a syncretic religion, which means it steals superstitions from any source, and the dialectic was taken from the ancient Greek religion of Hermeticism, which claimed that "opposite things are the same."

If you Google "Marxism is Gnosticism," you will find a lot of information.

The dialectic was formalized by Hegel, after Kant wrote his "Critique of Pure Reason," which was a religious reaction against the advance of logic. Kant claimed that "there are other ways to know other than reason." Kant claimed that whatever you feel like is as valid as logic and reason.

So Kant gave a bullshit excuse to religions to claim that faith is equally as valid as Aristotelian logic. It's just a lie, but that left religions without a way to argue, so Hegel made up the dialectic as an irrational way to argue.

The dialectic calls anything the "thesis," its perfect opposite the "antithesis," and claims that the thesis and antithesis are the same thing, and it is called the "synthesis."

Hence, the dialectic is absolutely incompatible with Aristotelian logic, which is based on the principle of non-contradiction: "A statement is either true or false."

The dialectic claims that true and false are "the same thing." It's a superstition, rigorously, mathematically demonstrable as false because it contradicts itself as the starting point.

Proof by contradiction is the most rigorous mathematical proof of falsehood, so Marxism is RIGOROUSLY false.

The dialectic is idealism, which is the complete opposite of materialism. Materialism believes in objective truths, independent of opinion, and idealism believes that humans are gods with magical powers, which can create reality itself with the power of the mind.

So Engels bullshitted that if the dialectic is the opposite of materialism, they are the same thing: "dialectical materialism." And since Engels paid Marx's wages, Engels made Marx adopt the "Draft of a Communist Confession of Faith" as what you know today as Marx's "Communist Manifesto," which is a manifesto of FAITH. It's a religion.

Dialectical materialism is what George Orwell denounced as totalitarian "doublethink" and "doublespeak."

Example:

Justice is the opposite of injustice, so "social justice" is both justice and injustice simultaneously.

Communism is the opposite of capitalism, so it's the same thing: fascism or "the third way." That's why Nazi means National SOCIALIST.

Communists call themselves "liberals", when liberalism is the antithesis of socialism.

Men are the same as women, hence men are "trans women."

Property is "theft."

Paid, voluntary work is "exploitation."

Communist dictatorship is "democracy."

Che Guevara is the flag of gays (he actually executed gays in a concentration camp, and was the ultimate homophobe).

And so on. Every word used by a Marxist means the opposite, so the entire Marxist discourse is a method for lying and gaslighting.

That's why Marxists call anybody who believes them a "useful idi*t." There is a Wikipedia page for the phrase.

Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:06AM (#50313374)
You are the one detached from reality.

The government funds AI companies by pretending to buy services from them. And that doesn't counts as "government revenue", but just sales. That's why Anthropic sued the Pentagon when it decided not to buy from Anthropic. Those services are fake.

You are detached from reality because your belief is Marxist, and Marxists define Marxism as "dialectical materialism." The dialectic is the Gnostic (religious) superstition that "opposite things are the same," which is intentionally incompatible with the principle of non-contradiction in logic. So Marxism is intentionally illogical and irrational, and that's why you are brainwashed and detached from reality.

Re:Iterating Backwards in C on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:45PM (#50312452)
A cargo cult wisdom snippet is the belief that compilers automagically apply every possible optimization. But they don't, because compilers don't know everything you know. Compilers have to assume that your code can be subject to side effects you never thought of, that would change the result of the code, so a lot of possible optimizations are avoided.
Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:39PM (#50312411)
You are not competing with private companies for the RAM. You are competing with the state because AI has strategic value, so the state subsidizes AI companies with unlimited pockets.

In socialism, it's always the manager of public funds who decides what you want and what you need, and they neither know nor care.

Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Friday October 30, 2026 @09:36PM (#50312394)
You are wrong because, in capitalism, investors invest their own money. But AI companies are not investing their own money because the state considers AI strategic in the war against China, so all AI companies are state-subsidized. That's why they have unlimited pockets.

Capitalism works for profit, which means that companies have to produce what people want, and what they produce has to be more valuable than the cost of production. Instead, AI companies have massive losses, covered by fake income from the state, and the state doesn't care if you cannot buy RAM.

Everything bought with state money is no longer available to consumers, and it's always the poorest who can no longer buy what has become scarce. So public spending is always paid for by the poorest, even if "the rich are taxed."

Re:Sam Altman Thinks You're Wasting DRAM on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:51PM (#50306633)
And this is why socialism never works: only you know the value of your RAM. When you "own nothing and be happy," somebody else decides that you are using too much RAM.

Altman: You are welcome to invest a little bit of your fortune in making major software developers write more efficient code that stops wasting our RAM. Start with internet browsers and the Windows 11 app that wastes one gigabyte showing the weather.
Re:Iterating Backwards in C on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:55AM (#50300326)
You should always check the compiled assembly with Compiler Explorer because compilers sometimes avoid certain optimizations for convoluted reasons, which are hard to predict.
Re:Iterating Backwards in C on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:50AM (#50300292)
I quote from "Optimizing Software in C++" by Agner Fog:

"Comparing an integer to zero is sometimes more efficient than comparing it to any other number. Therefore, it is slightly more efficient to make a loop count down to zero than to make it count up to some positive value, n. But not if the loop counter is used as an array index. The data cache is optimized for accessing arrays forwards, not backwards."

Yet that text was written for older CPUs. Modern CPUs are better at prefetching backwards access patterns, but if you try a microbenchmark with backwards array traversal, you may get misleading results.

Re:Attention people who think UB is fine on Thursday October 29, 2026 @11:19PM (#50299500)
Checking-the-address is overhead.

It's like checking for overflow in an arithmetic operation. Other languages do the checking, and that's why they're slower. But C++ doesn't check because it offloads the responsibility to the coder, so the coder can write faster code if he makes sure there are no bugs.

If the coder knows there will be four return values and writes them one after the other, the return (or MOV) instructions are distanced the same. The goto hack should work.

This is not name-calling. It's a fact.

Falsely claiming to represent a group of people is fraud, and fraud is a crime, even if the speaker is a member of the group he claims to represent.

Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:59PM (#50299383)
Transmission cost of an interpolated frame: 0 with DLSS. But adding a little extra information could help reduce artifacts.

Sure, DLSS uses game engine information, such as motion vectors and depth, which is unavailable for video. But neural networks can estimate motion directly from video frames and interpolate without that information. Providing additional data to fix artifacts would cost little.

Re:H.264 Is Magic on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:50PM (#50299320)
It is time to make a standard neural network for video, which guesses the next frame and/or applies super-resolution like DLSS does, so the necessary information to transmit is reduced to the minimum necessary for DLSS to reproduce the image without loss.
Re:Iterating Backwards in C on Thursday October 29, 2026 @10:44PM (#50299267)
For the uninformed: counting backwards in a for loop is faster because comparing an unsigned integer against 0 is generally faster than comparing it against any other value.

It also says not to use `for (i >= 0)` because any unsigned integer is >= 0, and the loop will never end.

Nobody has the right to talk in the name of an entire group of people.

This is fraud.

This is fraud, and probably a crime.

Who gave these people the right to speak on behalf of "the Kogui people"? Nobody.

Even if the speaker were himself Kogui, he would only speak for himself. He wasn't an elected president or ambassador for the Kogui.

Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:02AM (#50288288)
Reddit shadowbanned me multiple times for either absurd or political reasons, but my ISP used to assign dynamic IPv4 addresses, so I could easily create a new account. Then it switched to IPv6 with a static address, and now I can't create new Reddit accounts anymore.
For SWAR algorithms, calculating floor(64/n) for 0 < n < 65 has always been crucial, so I spent a lot of time developing fast division algorithms. But since the Ryzen 7000 series, the fastest approach has been to simply cast 64/n to an integer.

I'm kind of sad that all those algorithms have become obsolete, but at the same time, I'm happy that integer division has finally become fast enough in hardware.
