Re:Small Programming Tricks on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @01:51PM (#49730556)
These bits of knowledge are becoming less useful to me now that AI is doing a lot of the work.
Blood pressure varies significantly throughout the day and is often measured incorrectly at doctors offices. It's a good idea to get a home cuff BP machine and keep track of it yourself after reading up on how to use the machine. Otherwise you might get recommended medicine incorrectly, or you could get a false sense of security.

Re:It's a shame what's happened to radio on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @01:03PM (#49009908)
Lin Brehmer of WXRT Chicago was really good, he died not too long ago though. Since then I almost never turn the radio on in the car. Iggy pop does a great show on BBC radio 6 (online) and he plays good music but his many anecdotes and opinions are what really keep me listening.
Re:Tell HN: Happy Fathers Day on Sunday June 21, 2026 @08:34PM (#48624116)
Wow! I had a Dragon 32 back in the day :)
Re:U.S. Science Is in Chaos on Wednesday June 17, 2026 @05:21PM (#48577096)
More scientists need to get into politics?
Re:AI doesn't replace white collar work on Sunday March 08, 2026 @03:50PM (#47300629)
What about the 4000 Square employees that just got the boot?
Re:Software Engineering Is Back on Saturday February 07, 2026 @11:40AM (#46925181)
I didn't fully realize how much pain there was until I started delegating the coding to AI. It's very freeing. Unfortunately I think this will soon lead to mass layoffs.
Re:Id Software devs form "wall-to-wall" union on Friday December 12, 2025 @02:36PM (#46247853)
If you enjoy your job your employer is able to exploit you more?
Re:Perl's decline was cultural on Saturday December 06, 2025 @01:34PM (#46175495)
I thought its decline was due to Perl's confusing syntax. That's what caused me to move away from it anyway.
I wonder if they could test this by comparing blood pressures of older folks in Australia with those in other countries since I hear they really like beetroot there :)
Re:Medical aid in dying, my health, and so on on Wednesday June 11, 2025 @01:42PM (#44249973)
Yes, other states have it you can Google for a list.
Re:Dolly Parton's Dollywood Express on Wednesday June 11, 2025 @01:33PM (#44249878)
Thanks, was scratching my head and thinking that a baby's side isn't always peaceful.

*Tatham
I'd guess maybe 10-20% improvement for me.
Re:Do you want to be doing this when you're 50? on Saturday February 22, 2025 @01:29PM (#43141635)
Late 50's and still enjoying it. Are there some frustrating days? Sure. But overall it's fine and is relatively well paid. It helps to have one or two co-workers that you get along with and can joke with. At this age you get random aches and pains that keep popping up which make me appreciate my desk job.
Re:Egg Prices Are Soaring. Are Backyard Chickens the Answer? on Thursday February 20, 2025 @10:42AM (#43116041)
Where is the evidence that we're in hyperinflation?
Re:A marriage of solar energy and farming on Saturday January 04, 2025 @11:15AM (#42595588)
I've been interested to see some small (1 acre-ish) solar panel installations popping up on local farmland near me in Northwest Indiana. I'm a bit surprised because although we get quite a few sunny days it's nowhere near Colorado levels of sun. So I guess the economics must be getting to the point where it's either profitable now or is expected to be profitable soon.
Re:Howstuffworks.com creator, Marshall Brain, has died on Sunday November 24, 2024 @07:58PM (#42232140)
That is a very weird and troubling article.
Re:The Case for Hypochondria on Monday September 02, 2024 @01:09PM (#41427082)
I've also noticed that they give you a very short time to explain your problem and symptoms and it's not unusual for them to be misinterpreted and/or misunderstood. Sometimes assumptions are made and the doctor gets an incorrect picture in their head. It's a bit like when someone gets interviewed for a newspaper story and when the story is published it has obvious errors.
Re:What it's like take a train across America, a visual diary on Sunday September 01, 2024 @10:48AM (#41417399)
I get the impression that Amtrak is itself a tourist attraction, as opposed to a practical means of transportation.
Re:Starting Hospice on Monday August 05, 2024 @02:26PM (#41163929)
Just wanted to say thank you and farewell. You are in good hands with hospice.
Re:Can Reading Make You Happier? (2015) on Sunday August 04, 2024 @03:28PM (#41155709)
That's the one reservation I have about reading. When you're reading you aren't living, in a sense.
Re:Can Reading Make You Happier? (2015) on Sunday August 04, 2024 @03:25PM (#41155681)
Kurt Vonnegut wrote something similar about doing art of any kind.
Re:Sal Khan is pioneering innovation in education again on Wednesday May 22, 2024 @04:20PM (#40445919)
This might be the exception that proves the rule but I used to work for an outfit that made a school website product (SaaS) and they seemed to be making plenty of money.
Re:The curious case of the missing period on Tuesday May 21, 2024 @07:16PM (#40435344)
What about the missing comma at the end of the first line? :)
Re:Sound-suppressing silk can create quiet spaces on Friday May 10, 2024 @07:14PM (#40324639)
Interesting - I love the sound of birds and can go right back to sleep when they are chirping outside and I have the window open. Road noise on the other hand...
Re:FTC announces rule banning noncompetes on Tuesday April 23, 2024 @05:03PM (#40137226)
This is nice but I think it's small potatoes compared to what could be achieved economically by decoupling healthcare from employment.
Re:Discovering My Roommate's Death on Facebook on Sunday April 14, 2024 @08:48PM (#40035920)
You've been lucky. My sister in law and my wife's best friend were both killed in car accidents (not as pedestrians) in the US.
