So you need a warning whenever art makes you feel something other than enjoyment. Now I understand.

> TV, music, movies, theater, and books are supposed to make you feel something when consuming them.

So we don't need a warning when they do. What's not to understand?

Surely you're thinking of UI design. The term UX design was coined because it's not the same thing. You're right that UX design is not principally intended to benefit the user. That's by design.

Where I live you need to hold a trigger on the nozzle. You can't wander off and do something else.
Re:Microsoft Opens Up Old Win32 APIs to C# and Rust on Saturday January 23, 2021 @06:37PM (#25887197)
You could even call the win32 api from 16-bit VB3 by going through the wow thunking api. It worked well but the declarations were quite hairy.

Barmouth! Circa 1979. When we realised we were swimming in turds and shit tickets we decamped to Harlech.

That said, most of my holidays were in Wales back then and the Barmouth turd regatta is my only grim memory.

Re:Why do they still make car alarms? (2015) on Tuesday January 19, 2021 @05:14PM (#25839618)
House alarms are worse. People take their car alarms to work with them but the house alarms are here all day.

It's an easy mistake to make because the top of the article says

but the bottom says

> Posted by Ryan

The latter is just the blogspot username though. It's quite scruffy.

Re:People that think you’re an asshole on Sunday January 17, 2021 @12:25PM (#25812633)
Maybe they are all right. The twenty year olds think their peers are judgmental because they are judgmental. And so on.
Re:Have the Tables Turned on NoSQL? on Saturday January 16, 2021 @10:27AM (#25802773)
It reads like SEO spam: a plausible collection of statements scraped from other articles and then cobbled together with no understanding. It's a shame that stackoverflow has sunk to this.
I'm receiving scam calls from India saying "Your Amazon Prime subscription is about to renew, please talk to our representative if you wish to cancel". If Amazon Prime was easy to cancel this scam wouldn't exist.

(I actually tried going along with the scam, but his call centre was so noisy he couldn't hear what I was saying, ffs.)

"Open banking" and "cross-border banking" are two different things. The UK will definitely continue to have open banking. The UK-EU banking relationship is still up for negotiation. (I'm not hopeful though.)
In the 1970s this was a thing in England too, for the same reason. My Dad was advised to check his car for bombs and he wasn't anybody important.
All old computers get it right. They are not doing UI asynchrony. It's a fairly recent problem.
This is bad but it's not unusual. There are similar issues in Firefox and Windows. Nobody gets UI asynchrony right. There are race conditions in everything. It's particularly noticeable with a slow computer.

> This obesity problem is probably going to kill more people than COVID and the opioid epidemic

This is already the case. More people are killed by their unhealthy lifestyles than by anything else.

Re:Sealed U.S. Court Records Exposed in SolarWinds Breach on Friday January 08, 2021 @08:51AM (#25684681)
My record is 40 minutes. I let them play in a VM.
In the UK bitd (~1980) the test number was 174. It just rang you back when you hung up. There was no message. The exchanges weren't that sophisticated.

Extradition requires dual criminality. If you can extradite you can prosecute the offence locally.

They changed this about a fortnight ago. Twitter worked without javascript previously.
I agree, but I feel that measures that are only available to the wealthy (like putting your finances behind an anonymous corporation) are making things worse. The powerful, who are in the best position to bring about change, are shielded from the consequences of the pervasive loss of privacy and so have little reason to do anything about it.
"My Wrongs 8245–8249 & 117" is weirder than Brass Eye. And brilliant.
Re:Ticketmaster will pay $10M for hacking rival ticket seller on Thursday December 31, 2020 @10:50AM (#25593719)

Sadly, this isn't true. As quickly as the old idiots realise that their actions are futile, new idiots are born to repeat their mistakes.

The labour is not transferred from Xinjiang because the factory in question is in Xinjiang.

This is a masterpiece of weasel-wording.

Re:No Country for Old Developers on Monday December 28, 2020 @10:07AM (#25559711)
This probably is true. The industry has been growing quickly for decades so there will naturally be far more people with ten years' experience than thirty years', say. Most people who enter the industry are young, so you would expect the demographic to skew young.
Re:Print this file, your printer will jam (2008) on Saturday December 26, 2020 @12:27PM (#25544836)
A lot of printers, by default, function like an ancient teletype. They interpret incoming data as something like ASCII and print out the text. You need to send the correct escape sequence (i.e. a sequence of bytes starting with 0x1B) to switch into a more modern mode.
Re:Adobe Lightroom v6 is Falling Apart on Thursday December 24, 2020 @06:39PM (#25532675)
Years ago a software contractor in the UK got a criminal conviction for putting a hidden time lock in software he wrote. His intention was not to cause harm, merely to ensure he got paid.

This ought to be treated as a criminal matter. Of course it won't be.

Re:Grenfell Tower inquiry: key things we’ve learned this year on Thursday December 24, 2020 @12:33PM (#25529493)
I absolutely agree. Non-owners are typically paying more in rent than a mortgage would cost, yet they can't get a mortgage because of the absurd rules brought in after the 2008 financial crisis. Even after paying for this expensive remediation, the flat owners will still be ahead of renters. Why should tax-paying renters bail them out?
Re:Grenfell Tower inquiry: key things we’ve learned this year on Thursday December 24, 2020 @12:29PM (#25529443)
The site agent is just the manager of the site. You're thinking of the clerk of works. But your point stands.
