Re:How to stop Time Warner Cable sucking at Youtube on Sunday February 24, 2013 @09:59PM (#5277077)
I'm on TWC and this fix with iptables just made a massive difference. Whether it's throttling or not, I'm very impressed with the results.
Re:Row blows up over ownership of 'space marine' term on Friday February 08, 2013 @08:44AM (#5187773)
Wasn't at all surprising to me. Have they never heard of Warhammer 40,000?
Re:Favorite Unix Commands on Tuesday January 08, 2013 @09:55PM (#5029869)
Maximized on a 1080p monitor it was irritating with far too many internal scroll bars.

Great list of commands though.

Or "without video games and violent movies/TV shows".
Re:Windows 8 - best to pass it up: review on Monday November 12, 2012 @10:42AM (#4773226)
I've already gotten rid of the Metro start menu[1] (this is a dual screen desktop), and I've been very pleased with the results. Windows 8 is unsurprisingly superior at working out of the box with drivers, which I've enjoyed. I can't say it's worth that much of an upgrade though. I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to buy it.

Re:That Moment When RMS Walks Into Your Hackathon on Saturday November 10, 2012 @08:18PM (#4768394)
It made me laugh. I don't see it as an attack. Maybe against SaaS APIs, but that's it.
Re:Rip Off the Filters – We Need a Naked Instagram on Sunday November 04, 2012 @06:15PM (#4741469)
But Instagram without filters is just a camera.
Re:Show HN: Turn your pen into a touchscreen stylus on Wednesday October 24, 2012 @11:44AM (#4693418)
I can only imagine how pissed someone would be when they accidentally touch their phone or tablet with the wrong end of the Sharpie. Would rather put it on an actual pen than a permanent marker. Seems way too easy to make that mistake, since the ends even look fairly alike.

By the by, Sharpies are pens? Is it like one of those "all squares are rectangles" things?

>When I said "mature" games, I was referring to games with adult content, not the games where you can shoot/kill people.

Find it interesting that sex is deemed more "adult" than murder.

The only thing keeping me on Windows is the games. If Steam was on Linux with a strong library to back it up, I'd switch right now.
"Seems like a misunderstanding"

I'm not sure how you can come to that conclusion.

Re:Media burnout on Friday October 12, 2012 @10:30PM (#4647682)
Tough to take their call seriously with the "Find us on Facebook" plugin directly to the right of their opening paragraph.
Re:Entire cities dead on some World of Warcraft realms on Sunday October 07, 2012 @03:03PM (#4624059)
That's what makes EVE so much more interesting to me. There's only one server. The monthly fee can be earned in-game. The economy is tied to actual dollars because it's so reliable. There have been plenty of universe-spanning conflicts that impact the entire game with genuine political drama, and the dev team steps back to let it unfold with minimal intervention.
Re:Bill Nye warns: Creation views threaten US science on Tuesday September 25, 2012 @02:03AM (#4568882)
I was never a "fundamentalist" or anything that could be described that, but I was strongly religious until about 17-18 years old. However, I always had a nagging problem with biblical stories because I was also a good student and had trouble resolving the inherent conflict between those two realities. I tried since probably second grade to come up with an explanation that made sense in both worlds.

Maybe that was only because I grew up in a particularly open-minded Lutheran church. It wasn't until I got older and was in confirmation classes in middle school that the assistant minister admitted that Christians literally believe the Earth is a few thousand years old. They were always very open to everyone, but they also begrudgingly concluded that homosexuality was a sin when I was in high school Sunday school classes. Incidents like that really helped to jar my personal beliefs and for the first time ever, honestly question what I believed to be true.

Up until then, I partially did believe and partially did what people said. It took a lot of self-reflection (over several years) to realize that my beliefs were a direct result of being told what is "truth" in the religion that everyone I knew was a part of. I've been bringing this up in discussion with three of my friends as I was going through that period, and as a result of their own self-reflection, two have become atheist and one is more or less fed up with organized religion. It's a hard thing to face, and I can't get too upset that people react so defensively when the things they so adamantly and unquestionably believe are questioned by someone else. All I'd ask is that people make an honest effort to step back and evaluate why and how they came to their faith. Very smart people have done some amazing things while also being religious (Issac Newton basically invented modern calculus to explain the gravitational fields of the solar system and their interaction, yet was religious and an alchemist).

Based on the trends of demographics, I think this issue is likely going to sort itself out over time. The only concern is how fast it will go and how much will we delay the progression of knowledge. Long-term trendlines mean far less to the person who is stuck waiting for a turn. You won't be able to berate believers into changing their minds with facts and counterarguments, regardless of their validity. That's not how the human brain works.

As an aside, I just went to a wedding this weekend and got my first direct exposure to a religious event in a couple years now. Having been gone that long, the entire process felt a little creepy. Particularly when everyone kept saying "lord hear our prayer" in unison, out in the middle of the wilderness by a river. Very cult-like, but I had never thought of it that way when I was a member.

Re:Search for Obama on Facebook and You Get Romney on Wednesday September 19, 2012 @08:26PM (#4546321)
BINGO Blitz being #2 is a much more curious to me.
"Where are the apps? Is... Oh. Are these all of the apps or some of the apps? Where are all of the apps?"

Did you pick up someone else's phone? When you initialize an account for the first time (as someone who's done this a bunch with custom ROMs on Android), there will be tutorial overlays on the screen explaining the answers to those questions.

Holy shit.

That's handy to know.

Spent a lot of time nitpicking small issues, but he does pick it up with better points after the back button rant and latitude.

The horrendous lack of support for landscape views, G+ photos being stuck in my gallery (with a Picasa icon on top of it), soft button rotation, crappy contact pictures, and the 4 separate text messaging systems from Google.

Good list overall, I hope the next update (Kringle?) tries to enforce more uniformity in the UI and in Google Apps particularly.

Re:What Happens When You Taunt 4Chan: Story of Lacey Vicich on Monday September 10, 2012 @06:11PM (#4502565)
My exact thoughts. The quote for those who don't have access to watch the video:

"Anonymous is a hornet's nest, and Barr said, 'I'm gonna put my penis in that thing.'"

Glad I'm not the only one who thought that. A bit on the large side...
Re:Apple v Samsung Foreman Gets More Things Wrong on Wednesday September 05, 2012 @06:29AM (#4478724)
I'm not sure how much sway that would hold, considering he explicitly set out to teach Samsung a lesson using the verdict.
Re:Four years with Google Chrome, and I'm never going back on Tuesday September 04, 2012 @02:46AM (#4473443)
Chrome seems to want to give preference to any random page I visited once rather than my bookmark. And the list is so short - if it's not in the ~6 items you just can't get to it. And you can't just trim the list like you would in Firefox by hitting delete on entries you don't want to be in there.

I'd go back to firefox if their sync system was improved since I last used it.

Re:We need a longer school year on Friday August 31, 2012 @02:43PM (#4461075)
I'd say it's not necessarily the length of the school year but the size of summer break being several months. Teachers spend a lot of time getting kids back up to speed in the fall. Lengthening breaks during the school year and compensating by trimming summer break down would be wise.
Because most Americans are unaware of how limiting content providers are once you connect from a non-US IP. A blunt dose of awareness would go a long way in helping people understand the situation.

And it's not really their fault, either. How would you know that the whitelist even exists if you're always on it?

Half of the 512 MB is dedicated to video, IIRC.
Re:This year's iPhone design trend: Side navigation on Thursday August 30, 2012 @11:22AM (#4455025)
Except my GS3 has one, and released on 4.0 with 4.1 due out very soon.

The only phone I can think of that doesn't have that is the Nexus.

Re:Everything you know about China is wrong on Thursday August 30, 2012 @11:16AM (#4454999)
Linkbait? I'm pretty sure they do have a few buildings that are made of half styrofoam covered in plaster, and a bridge filled with garbage and covered in rebar and plaster.
I would've said yes until I read that it was an all-day interview.
Their math is off.

$1bn is 20bn nickels. With a diameter of 21.21mm and height of 1.95mm, that's an area of about 689mm, assuming 800 for a lack of packing efficiency. 800 * 20,000,000,000 = 16 trillion mm^3, or 16,000 m^3. A high end dump truck can carry ~20 yards of material, which is about 15.3 m^3. That means you'd require (16,000 m^3/15.3 m^3 per truck) = ~1,046 trucks.

1,046 trucks. Fact check your satire, bro.

(Alternatively, using the "more than 30" figure of say, 35, each truck would be carrying 457 m^3 of nickels, or about 571.5 million nickels, which would weigh 3150 short tons per truck.)

Fun morning exercise, at least.
