Re:macOS 15.8.2 Breaks OpenGL on Sunday October 18, 2026 @12:29PM (#50142542)
My Iphone has had some bugs in the last year that are so sloppy yet impactful its almost funny. About half the time im looking at my lock screen notifications, the screen will lock less than a second after touching the screen. I have had other issues as well, but for a company with so much money I expect a little more craftsmanship.

I have had other issues as well but something that actively locks my phone while I am obviously using it is an extremely frustrating start to my day.

A good faith cooperate tax would solve most if not all of our deficit, and arguably increase our GDP growth.

A 5% revenue tax on the fortune 500 would get us half way there. I could not quickly get a number for total revenue of more than the fortune 500, but I would not be surprised if a 3% VAT would cover the entire deficit. We lose so much tax revenue due to all the loop holes deliberately left in the corporate tax code.

On top of that, ban stock buy backs entirely, that way more of the record breaking profits have to go to wages or other means of investing in the business.

Well intentioned laws today can be used by illintentioned actors in the future, and mild legal exceptions can become significant ones with a couple additions.

The 100 mile zone is a good example - that 100 mile zone assumes the entirety of the great lakes is international waters, even though Lake Michigan is 100% American Territory and over 300 miles long. So, you could be in a landlocked county of Indiana, and be harassed by the federal government for being in a border zone.

Whats to stop someone from saying, the entire Mississippi river and its tributaries are a border zone? With that you could get 80% of the US population into the border zone.

By enabling some "rule based" decisions that skirt the constitution, you enable a legal mechanism for constitutional rights to be violated without any legislation.

Also crazy that lake michigan counts as the border, despite being entirely in the US, so you could be minding your business in Fort Wayne, Indiana and have your phone searched for no reason.

There are much worse things the government spends money on (or doesn't tax) than well paying jobs that play an important role in society. What do you think happens to that $200k? Do you think it just gets sent to the void? That money is spent on things like food, local businesses, rec sports and trips for family... and all that money gets spent again by those local businesses.

Meanwhile Boeing did enough stock buybacks from 2014 to 2019 to give every single boeing employee $200k... and when the 737 max crashes happened, the stock crashed back to pre buyback levels. THAT is truly sending money to the void to be lit on fire, money that could of been used to change the lives of thousands of employees and factory workers.

Re:Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen? on Thursday September 17, 2026 @05:15PM (#49746652)
Luckily I do have a macbook, and try to put all my passwords in a "neutral" password manager, but this post has made me think about the edge cases of this sort of thing.

Ive always said, the number one reason I will stick with an iphone - despite any present for future dumb ux changes - is that I will always be able to physically go to an apple store and get someone to help me.

Re:Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen? on Thursday September 17, 2026 @03:48PM (#49745632)
Dumb question, does backing up my iphone to icloud help solve this? Assuming im willing and able to get a brand new phone? What 2fa would the Apple store need, if hypothetically my lost iphone was my only apple product?

After they go get a second phone
If this is basically an MCP/api with curated data sources, then yes im interested.

I think there is some legit market opportunity to try to provide this to small - medium businesses. The biggest advantage Amazon has over them is visibility, and the tooling that comes with it. If you made a squarespace plugin or otherwise that would index someone's store, then that store owner would be able to get business from the shared platform, while not worrying about having a good search tool. As a potential shopper, I would have value in buying on this network, especially if I had reason to beleive the reviews were legit.

After I typed the above out I checked out your profile... you may already be working on this but I have some other ideas, can I message you?

I've long been thankful for a lot of ADA requirements in software, like OSX, which has enabled some interesting automation tools over the years. More recently, I have been saying the best part of MCPs and AI era is all of a sudden its gotten companies to expose all their data in a universal format, so I am no longer beholden to what a PM or UX designer things is best for me.

Selfishly, I will always advocate for this, but as someone who is colorblind (which barely counts as a disability) I am very aware of how easily inaccasbile so many tools are.

The powerbi dashboard that ships w/ fabric usage credits is the only place I have to know how much my work costs, and its the same color as several other things. Id so much rather they just give me the raw data on an API feed but instead I need to use like 400mb of ram to view an illegible chart.

Legal issues asside, I find this agentic commerce goal naive. Its like expecting me to buy a different microwave so the popcorn button works with the official amazon popcorn. Theres no way they will be able to replace the context and tooling I have setup for my own personal agents. And theres no way in hell im going to give Amazon every piece of information in my life so they are slightly better equipped to recommend which usbc dongle I need.

I understand that the sheer size of Amazon, and industry standard of forcing AI into every tool, makes them think its worth investing in. But from my outside perspective this is not a winable strategy.

Re:Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @06:48PM (#49635699)
A horrifying number of people flagrantly use their phones while driving. Im not talking about peaking at a text or google maps, but straight up scrolling tik tok while driving. At the end of the day there is going to be a lowest common denominator of selfish morons on the road, and the two practical solutions I see are 1) aggressive surveillance state grade distracted driving enforcement 2) self driving cars.

I used to bike to work in Chicago and it was surreal being able to look right into someone's car and see hardly anyone is paying attention.

I'll also never forget the first time getting hit by a car (car did left turn when I was biking straight through a green light) and right before impact seeing the driver's face illuminated by their phone while looking straight down driving into me.

Re:MCP Is Dead on Friday May 29, 2026 @11:15PM (#48332155)
The number one value of MCP's is that it forced everyone align on an API protocol, but the protocol itself has room for improvement.
Websites should have a lean markdown or .txt page for each human friendly webpage. A lot of the surge in bots is because of LLMs. Its insane that a technical documentation web page can use 200MB + of memory, when the core information I care about is << 1 MB of text. at the path of least resistance for many people is to have claude code hit 20 of such pages.

This is something that would be perfect for cloudflare to host and sell as a service - static web pages via their CDN network.

I do not work in web development, so im sure there are plenty of details im ignorant of, but the TLDR of "how to fight accidental DDOS because of AI tooling " is make it easier for them to get the content they want.

Re:Brain scans reveal 3 ADHD subtypes on Sunday May 03, 2026 @05:18PM (#48001611)
I've described the field of Psychiatry as trying to describe a building, using only its shadow (projection from high dimensional space to 2d space), with only a handful of choices for the building type. Ultimately only the building (the patient) really knows the full scope of complexity, but a doctor has to be careful in how they get info out.

I don't have a solution, as its an inherently hard problem with a lot of risks (like giving medicine to the wrong person). But I also think this desire to have nice categories for things can be counterproductive in a lot of cases.

I personally think rebranding aspergers + Autism to the autism spectrum was a mistake, as there's a huge difference between someone who's really good at their job but weird and despises certain workplace nonsense - and someone who can't take care of themselves.

ADHD is another great example of a bucket that makes non sense. We were evolved to be hunter gatherers that get many hours of walking or running, and other physical activity every day. Then we act surprised when 11 year olds don't want to sit still 6 hours a day, or getting people like me to write a JIRA ticket is like pulling teeth.

I think separating out these large categories into smaller ones is a good step, but ultimately I think the categories are a counterproductive solution to our human urge to find a logical explanation to things.

Re:Obsidian Sync now has a headless client on Saturday February 28, 2026 @04:13PM (#47200298)
This tool should finally make it possible to setup a good web interface to my obsidian notes. I have a hacky setup using github as the backend storage system but its slow.

Ive been surprised at how few people are interested in an obsidian browser tool, but its great if I want to read / write notes from a corporate laptop for example.

Re:America is slow-walking into a Polymarket disaster on Monday January 19, 2026 @11:54AM (#46681289)
Yes it is, this happened before almost 20 years ago and the NBA ref went to jail. Yet somehow the whitehouse insider trading is. Did you know someone took out a $300M BTC Short position right before a trump tarriff announcement in October?
Re:America is slow-walking into a Polymarket disaster on Sunday January 18, 2026 @03:55PM (#46672070)
I completely agree insider trading is an issue, especially with the legality of sitting congressmen being able to day trade. But with the exception of elected officials voting for bad bills / policies, the "victim" is whomever loses money on those trade. Its reactive to world events, meaning the world events aren't being changed by the insider trader.

Polymarket is worse as it gives a mechanism for proactively changing the outcome of events to a much more extreme degree, simply because someone can make money on it.

A benign version of this would be NFL employees betting $1million on the color of gatorade in the Superbowl.

An insane version of this would be Trump issuing a single airstrike on Iran after having a friend or family member place a $10M bet on polymarket that pays out $1B. It completely erodes the obligation our government officials have to not act in their self interests.

Re:America is slow-walking into a Polymarket disaster on Sunday January 18, 2026 @02:58PM (#46671555)
I think you have completey missed my point. The stock market only allows you to trade securities, and (in theory) there is a lot of regulation and enforcement on who buys / sells stocks. Additionally, no one has the power to magically set a stock price to be a certain price on a certain date.

Polymarket all of a sudden makes it much easier to make money betting on an outcome people control. Looking at polymarket, I see bets paying 100-1 based on the number of tweets Elon makes on a given day. I see another at 100-1 on wether the US airstrikes Iran today with $66m riding on it. All of a sudden theres an incentive of a life changing amount of money for goons in the whitehouse to strike Iran for shits and giggles.

Did you know that in 2007 some NBA Refs were caught rigging games for just $2000 a game? Now Refs don't even need to be payed off when you can make a position anonymously with bitcoin.

Re:America is slow-walking into a Polymarket disaster on Sunday January 18, 2026 @02:08PM (#46671075)
It gives people in power, wether it be the government or even an NBA ref, a vehicle to profit off of conflicts of interest / fixing games / etc...

Ive seen people point out White House press conferences do weird shit, like cut the conference 10 seconds before some polymarket prop bet of "how long will this press conference be".

Much more heinously, a few months ago right before one of Trumps asinine tariff announcements, someone took out a $300M BTC short position that was almost certainly from a WH insider.

I honestly don't care if someone loses all their money gambling, but the problem I have is how so many institutions are able to be undermined at a fundamental level do the existence of polymarket.

You can do a lot of this in obsidian with the dataview and execute-code plugins!
I've implemented a POC on exactly this and am working on something more sophisticated right now. Can I reach out to discuss more?
Not exactly what you're looking for but I a few months ago I spent a day building a llama-index pipeline against my markdown notes with a really privative note crawling implementation, and had surprisingly good results for question answering.

I don't use an org-roam note system but I've been working on a similar and highly opinionated note system that I'm always making tools for. And I'm always interested in seeing people's ideal note systems.

my crude WIP Obsidian / Markdown note RAG tool: https://github.com/bs7280/markdown-embeddings-search

Yes! Pikapods, which is a service to "self host" open source tools cheaply. I discovered and implemented this yesterday during lunch, took only a few minutes.
