Re:Mathematics has changed. Let's act like it on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:15PM (#50328713)
Isn't it the passage of mathematics from the age of craftsmanship to the age of industrial making ?

My recent take on AI is that people haven't adapted to the new huge potential of the tool, and don't dream big enough (yet).

It's like seeing a car engine for the first time, lamenting about the future of horses, and not realizing it'll also help us fly.

Re:Running the unmodified Linux amdgpu driver on an iPad on Monday October 12, 2026 @06:20AM (#50054199)
But then how do you even make the driver install on the ipad ? Aren't drivers supposed to run under system-level privileges (which iPadOS will never let you run under)
Re:Running the unmodified Linux amdgpu driver on an iPad on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:26AM (#50053179)
can someone explains this project ? i understand nothing about what it's doing... Do iPads have amd gpus ??
Re:What even is an OS now? on Saturday September 26, 2026 @02:55AM (#49853943)
no idea you were working on fly !

As someone who's building its news project on it, it's both reassuring, but also not since you're leaving..

Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Friday September 25, 2026 @04:37AM (#49841773)
Totally disagree on the reevaluation of architecture best practices.

Agents are as prone as forgetting to update duplicated code as we are ( or almost ), because they work at the same level : text files spread everywhere that you have to open and read to know what's inside.

The fundamental reasons for those architecture best practices are still there, and it's actually quite convenient and also a good reason to remain optimistic in our ability to find a job as a professional software developer.

Re:Developing provably correct Rust code with Verus on Thursday September 17, 2026 @09:31AM (#49740517)
That's indeed a weird feeling when going back to another language after having coded in rust. First you're happy not having to write any "unsafe" keyword. Then you're horrified for the very same reason.
Re:Nvidia announces native GPU programming in Rust on Thursday September 17, 2026 @08:09AM (#49739628)
i'm surprised modular's doesn't get much traction. The promise seems super interesting, and chris latner has the record to back up his claims. If someone has an explanation..
Re:So you want to use OpenRouter? on Friday September 11, 2026 @05:25AM (#49655582)
That looks absolutely horrifying. What are the alternatives ??
Re:Shopify moves back to Native from React Native on Friday September 11, 2026 @05:14AM (#49655512)
is there still no way to compile / execute ios apps on a linux machine ?
Re:Zig's Io.Threaded Is Neat on Saturday August 22, 2026 @04:31AM (#49397778)
it's also my opinion. Which makes me wonder : isn't there an opportunity to create a variant of rust that would make absolutely zero compromise on UB and safety at the detriment of user experience ( which we don't care about now, with AI generating the code) ?

Like programming in a kind of super strict IL. Or the opposite : super poweful, super abstract language, yet extremely strict.

« Even America's closest postwar allies like the UK, Sweden and Japan did not get that type of diplomatic cover, it was exclusive to Israel.«

wasn’t echelon a joint collaboration between the US and the UK ?

I wonder how we're always hearing about israel's tactics to influence other countries, but never ever about other countries doing the same ? Russia is often quoted as trying to influence europe's elections right now (which makes sense since most european countries are huge support for ukraine), but we barely hear about Qatar for example. We only see that they've got huge lobbying budgets, or that they're buying companies everywhere, but never the details.
That's actually a really good point... There's currently zero incentive to buying more hardware, and that's one very good reason do have a new one.
Re:Why the Legendary Erdős Problems Are Falling to AI on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @10:14AM (#49183240)
something i've just realized : today long-standing maths problems are falling. It's great intellectually but won't probably have an immediate impact on our lives.

Now, what will happen once long-standing physics ( and chemistry and biology) problems will start to fall and at the same rate ?

Then we're going to enter a totally different world.

"was considering a mass sell off to raise cash to defend the Yen."

How would that have worked ? Selling US bonds in exchange for yens, to diminish the amount of yen in the economy, and pump up its price ?

Re:Half-Life ported to Mac OS 9 on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @10:08AM (#49097775)
Never developped a driver, but doesn't that require running the OS in some special mode, or in a VM, requiring a ton of time waiting for the thing to reboot over and over again ?
Re:Scaling to 1M concurrent sandboxes in seconds on Friday July 17, 2026 @04:47AM (#48944820)
how complex is maintaining a firecracker cluster over bare metal in practice ?
Re:A Road to Lisp: Why Lisp on Friday July 10, 2026 @04:22AM (#48857242)
never understood why people say that: the syntax for defining code seems quite different from the syntax defining data structure. There's no homoiconicity in javascript..
Re:My Thoughts on the Bun Rust Rewrite on Friday July 10, 2026 @04:12AM (#48857164)
Not a really nice post. It reads like someone refusing to accept bitter feelings (which is absolutely understandable given the circumstances), and then go on to personally attacking the person who hurt you.

He should have kept the "horrible manager" parts away, as it really doesn't have anything to do with the point of the post.

i don't understand the last point of UDF. Either you need the state to be updated atomically across different systems or you don't. But writing a row in a system in order to update the second one at any random time in the future isn't really much different from enqueuing a job in queue.
I wonder if our common expectation that true theories somehow had to be beautiful and elegant is going to survive the coming century. What if "real" nature phenomenon were actually best described by horrible mess of impossible equations, that only machines could actually manipulate and reason about ?

That would be really sad..

if this was the case, there would be no state sponsoring palestinian terrorism for a long time.

Look at what happened after 9/11, it's pretty clear there's a wide difference between how US consider its own security matter vs israel's one.

Re:Using AI to write better code more slowly on Tuesday May 26, 2026 @06:57AM (#48277961)
"Because this version of AI is worth 10 trillion dollars."

i wonder how much the real version of AI is worth. I've got a hinch we're going to find out pretty soon.

Re:Haiku on Wednesday May 13, 2026 @03:58PM (#48126667)
wondering : apart from the aesthetics, is there still some technology from beos that would be still considered an improvement compared to what today's OS provide ?
Re:France Moves to Break Encrypted Messaging on Sunday May 10, 2026 @12:33AM (#48081024)
of course, nothing magically prevents the app from sending keys or decrypted content to a third party.

That's why if you're really serious about e2ee you have to install the app from source.

i think using AI is going to transform our definition of programming into something more abstract, but it's still going to require human.

We're going to start thinking in terms of program general properties ( termination conditions, invariants, symetries, etc), and code quality indicators, to drive our work into certain directions, depending on the project.

Then in 20 years we're going to consider the task of actually typing code something of really low value and uninteresting.

I can feel it's already happening to me after just a few months of vibe coding.

yes miro is also what i'm using. It's really a digital whiteboard.

"used to be" ?? What are engineering team doing nowadays when discussing architecturing their systems ?
Re:Claude Opus 4.7 on Thursday April 16, 2026 @10:58AM (#47794093)
i tried to find an API pricing for GLM 5.1 but couldn't find any on the homepage. How are you using it ?
Re:Agent - Native Mac OS X coding ide/harness on Thursday April 16, 2026 @05:48AM (#47790845)
you forgot the memory model. Which is an absolutely essential and hard to design part of the agent.
