Re:Vungle CEO charged with attempted murder, sexual abuse on Saturday October 21, 2017 @03:13AM (#15521011)
I guess it should be "sexual abuse of two children under three years old" now?
Re:Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber on Sunday February 19, 2017 @08:20PM (#13683471)
I believe they're referring to the fact that Uber took specific action to promote itself by canceling surge pricing at JFK during the strike, not that it did anything passively through inaction.

Lyft did not negate surge pricing that day, AFAIK.

Re:Target removes CEO in wake of cyber attack on Monday May 05, 2014 @04:34PM (#7701039)
Prepare to go through this discussion again in two years after chip-and-pin's expensive rollout doesn't prevent or deter online CC theft, despite everyone having to get fancy new cards from their banks.
Re:What Happens When One of Your Coworkers Dies on Thursday December 19, 2013 @11:06PM (#6939867)
I couldn't help but read this in the voice of Ed Norton's character from Fight Club.

Apparently not.
Re:Once-great SSD manufacturer OCZ filing for bankruptcy on Wednesday November 27, 2013 @06:46PM (#6812074)
Everyone on HN is glad you're happy, but your single data point does fly in the face of statistically significant reliability problems with OCZ drives (ie, the only real way to evaluate storage manufacturers).
Re:Dear Spike Lee on Wednesday November 27, 2013 @05:12PM (#6811517)
I think it's prudent given that while the agency apparently lowballed him, it's not clear whether the agency or Spike Lee's production company (40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks, appearing on the posters in question on his Facebook page) are the party actually responsible for the theft/misappropriation.
Re:Could we kill the icon? on Friday October 04, 2013 @06:58PM (#6498583)
Could I kill that icon in cornflower blue?

This misses the point in favor of some misguided idealism, I think. It's hard enough to cram a functional, usable interface into the space provided often enough without worrying about throwing a hard-won language of visual metaphors straight into the trash before you start.

Re:Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S on Tuesday September 10, 2013 @04:09PM (#6363056)
Elementary data collection?
I think there is a demand for t-shirts and henleys that a certain online-savvy, fit-conscious consumer demographic perceives to be customized.
Re:Revising MailChimp's logo on Saturday July 13, 2013 @02:06AM (#6036867)
It's unimportant.
Re:A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game on Friday June 28, 2013 @10:54PM (#5961357)
Can I just downvote you for whining and confusing anecdotes for data?
Re:A Dark Room - minimalist text-based game on Friday June 28, 2013 @10:52PM (#5961352)
HN comment trolls are probably not a representative selection of your future audience.
Re:Indie developers cannot self-publish on Xbox One on Thursday May 23, 2013 @01:01AM (#5755431)
Microsoft isn't betting on missing out on the next Minecraft. They're betting on being able to bring it to the platform once it's a confirmed hit.

Compared to the consumer-facing mess that's XBLIG, it's hard to fault them.

We haven't seen pricing information. Rumors surrounding a subsidized model (as some versions of the Xbox 360 were sold) have been thick.
Re:Xbox One Revealed on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @02:34PM (#5745753)
I'd posit that the very existence of exclusives is one of the things that defines this as a gaming console through and through, if no longer first and foremost.
Re:Xbox One Revealed on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @02:31PM (#5745728)
It seems pretty obvious that they want to replace your Roku (easy - nobody owns Roku content) and your AppleTV (harder, iTunes lock in) and everything else in the ecosystem.

The desire to be the "one" box people have in their living room is pretty clear. I'm not sure how this will interop with common devices like AV receivers (HDMI issues?) but it will obviously need to play nice to capture the mid-to-high-end of the market.

Re:Xbox One Revealed on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @02:24PM (#5745665)
You're getting a gaming console, with the addition of a host of other features that ensure the console platform can reach market stability through sales and continue to provide content - including the games you want to play - over the multi-year span that a major investment in hardware requires of a company.

On the other hand - what's preventing you from GAMING on your PC?

Re:Xbox, A New Generation Revealed (livesteam) on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @02:20PM (#5745620)
They chose this angle because the number of people watching who care about the ethics of biometric data capture are basically a rounding error on a marketing spreadsheet.
Re:Xbox, A New Generation Revealed (livesteam) on Tuesday May 21, 2013 @02:05PM (#5745484)
You still think this is still primarily a game console?

Microsoft is putting all its chips down on the battle for your living room, which is a major front. The fight to be the all-in-one device people buy that replaces their cable box, game console, and media server (and the data being positioned as the provider of that device brings with it) is not a small one.

Self-identified "gamers" like yourself, who will probably turn out to be the minority purchasing audience for this generation of consoles-cum-entertainment boxes, already have a venue for game porn - it's called E3 - and Microsoft knows it's coming up in a few weeks.

Your history of negative experiences is a nice anecdote, despite being extremely subjective.

Re:Why I Wear a Disco Ball on Friday May 03, 2013 @04:01AM (#5649314)
It says a lot about the endurance of the human spirit that in the midst of a catastrophe like Sandy, you still found the inner strength to chug a gallon of milk like a true meathead frat boy and presumably upload it straight to Facebook.

The disco ball is fitting, I think. You should keep wearing it.

Let me see if I can get the same tone as your comment: I have a hard time taking any complaint about vertical devices seriously when the page content is responsive and the bar is not static at lower resolutions. Perhaps rotate your monitor the other way if the loss of 69 pixels is causing you such heartburn?
Because the NRA.
Re:Open Sans, how do we love thee? on Monday April 22, 2013 @03:12AM (#5588223)
16px is proper body-text size.
The first grenade was waiting to be jumped on almost two years ago. Then there were more grenades every quarter.

The only thing Andrew Mason's jumping on at this point is a pile of Scrooge McDuck money.

Re:An Unremarkable Event in the Tenderloin on Thursday February 28, 2013 @02:05AM (#5297501)
Westwood is absolutely nothing like downtown SF in this regard - its homeless population consists of about a half dozen friendly transients and a bird lady. I have no idea where this poster lived in SFO but he clearly has never been to the Tenderloin.
Re:Google's Goals with Chromebook Pixel on Thursday February 21, 2013 @08:58PM (#5262046)
This (and the top parent) are the only reasoned, insightful comments I've seen about the Pixel all day.

If you have to be on a laptop, the screens on the new Macbook Pros are simply a joy to use - as long as you aren't mucking with bitmaps too much, the clarity of web and code is really unmatched, eyestrain is greatly reduced.

Within the above restrictions (laptop, must be a locked/stripped-down OS), the Chromebook Pixel begins to make a lot more sense as an attractive laptop option.

Or a Houston-based "web designer" ripping off a single design for local clientele?
