Re:H-1B in 2020: Immigration Visa Faces Further Restrictions on Tuesday December 03, 2019 @09:47AM (#21692645)
So much misinformation in this thread. H1B's don't get paid lower. Law requires that they be paid market wage and no native workers are being undercut.

If you see this happening, then you can actually report it to DoL (I have had a call from a DoL investigator about H1B abuse at a past employer based on a complaint filed by an employee).

Are there any quantum simulating frameworks that I can download on my high performance gaming PC and start playing with simple quantum programs?

It's not "stealing"
Re:Lots of Job Hunting, but No Job, Despite Low Unemployment on Thursday October 31, 2019 @12:50PM (#21410837)
You are wrong on that. A company I worked for was investigated after a complain about H1B process. I actually had an investigator call me asking all kinds of questions. They do take complaints about H1B abuse seriously.
Re:Lots of Job Hunting, but No Job, Despite Low Unemployment on Thursday October 31, 2019 @12:05PM (#21410242)
It is illegal to hire an H1B if a qualified American is available. You should file a complaint with DoL.

Lack of evidence is not evidence of falsehood. Strong magnetic fields can make you forget things. No one know what sort of effect wrought by weak EM radiation exposure over decades. Some of us would like to err on the side of caution, if feasible. Just like GMO and organic food.

This is in stark contrast with Hinduism and Yoga - there the goal is to never come back!

Re:New chips for machine intelligence on Monday October 07, 2019 @09:11AM (#21180340)
Are deep neural networks really that widely applicable that it's profitable to design custom chips for them? What about other models of AI that involve, say, discrete math or graph search?
And most of these urban dwellers did not vote for Trump or this vindictive Governor.
Because most of the benefits of the former are getting concentrated into the hands of educated and urban dwellers. So people want change, but end up stupidly sabotaging.

Disclaimer: I am not a Trump supporter.

Many airlines could very well be tech companies at this point. Same for some other "old school" stalwarts like UPS and Fedex.

Re:Neural Networks, Manifolds, and Topology (2014) on Wednesday February 13, 2019 @10:56AM (#19153960)
He mentioned that he applied knn to handwritten digit recognition. A likely approach would be as follows.

Given a new vector that needs to be classified (say, x), it is compared with its nearest neighbors in the data set (let's call them x_1, x_2, x_3,..,x_k). A weighted average of the categories of the nearest neighbors is calculated to classify x.

That is to say, the category y that x belongs to is given by some function of categories of the nearest neighbor (e.g. weighted sum)

y = f(w_1y_1 + .... + w_ky_k)

where f() is a function that converts the continuous weighted sum to one of the integers representing the categories, and y_1,...,y_k are categories that x_1,...,x_k belong to, respectively.

The weights w_1,....,w_k can be determined by optimizing some error function.

Re:U.S. Changes Visa Process for High-Skilled Workers on Thursday January 31, 2019 @10:19AM (#19045304)
They lost an opportunity to really overhaul the system that would have drawn support from liberal groups. Like turning H1B allocation process into an auction - let the company that offers highest compensation win the visa. And associating the visa with the employee not the employer, so they are free to switch around.
