Re:The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @05:57AM (#50256722)
FYI it's "moot", not "mute" here.
Re:Fable Took My Job on Monday October 12, 2026 @05:50AM (#50053900)
If you think AI can replace experienced engineers you're not working on anything complicated. If your product is a web app, sure, maybe. If you're working on actually difficult problems, then people who know what they're doing are irreplaceable. AI can supplement them and make them more productive, sure. AI does not know what NOT to build.
Re:IRCv3 on Sunday October 11, 2026 @08:15AM (#50042436)
I don't get this, it is working. It's largely replaced IRC in open source spaces. It's not going to penetrate the mainstream but it's fine for what it is and people do use it all the time.
They have a product good enough that they don't need a huge advertising budget that involves every channel on YouTube

>And companies: you must let juniors write the code.

This is just not going to happen.

Re:PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @10:15AM (#49993178)
There's a site you can put your serial number into and it'll tell you if you're vulnerable
Re:PS5 Jailbreaks Are Escalating at an Unprecedented Pace on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @09:12AM (#49992309)
They should really give you code execution with nothing but a paperclip like the original Switch models
Re:We're working on a new RuneScape MMO on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:27PM (#49958072)
Source: I made it up, apparently, my memory failed me and they never went to prison. They just owed Blizzard $88594539.
Re:We're working on a new RuneScape MMO on Sunday October 04, 2026 @09:03AM (#49953569)
They very famously did not ignore it, with the whole "you think you want that but you don't", the shutdown of Nostalrius and so on. People were going to jail for WoW private servers before 2010
Re:We're working on a new RuneScape MMO on Sunday October 04, 2026 @06:08AM (#49952422)
Same thing happened to Blizzard
Re:OpenBSD Developers Reject Uutils Coreutils on Sunday October 04, 2026 @06:04AM (#49952389)
Bit hostile. I get the point that it's unnecessary, but the whole "agenda" thing feels kneejerk. Just say that being written in Rust isn't a good enough reason for adoption.
Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @08:30AM (#49932745)
Much like Arch you need to have a decent idea of what you want first. As a 15+ year Arch user I used to decry people using Manjaro or the like, now I'm using omp, so I get the appeal
The UK are at least vaguely equal opportunity authoritarians, and their police will arrest both the angry dad posting on Facebook about immigrants and the pensioner peacefully protesting in support of Palestine all the same
Australia doesn't have those either, despite many people assuming we do (including most people who live here).
Re:CS240 AI Cheating Retrospective on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @07:40PM (#49915899)
This was in...2013? I think the main point was just to stop students from footgunning themselves
Re:Gitea 28.0 on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @07:16PM (#49915716)
It is kind of nuts how seemingly a generation of programmers came to think Git = GitHub
Re:CS240 AI Cheating Retrospective on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @06:52PM (#49915525)
My professor in a C course said anyone that uses `goto` gets failed. It was quite liberating for me to then end up writing `goto`s for a living
Re:Google ending ChromeOS support two years early on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @10:33AM (#49894027)
Schools, sadly for the students.
Re:Show HN: Raven – The harness of harnesses, built for RSI on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @09:15AM (#49892716)
We gotta do something about these clashing TLAs.
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:47AM (#49889618)
Give omp a try.
Re:GrapheneOS – When an app is slow on Monday September 28, 2026 @04:23PM (#49883847)
Waze works perfectly fine for me
Re:When did Google get so f-ing weird? on Sunday September 27, 2026 @05:16PM (#49870942)
I'm not sure about this. I know complete normies that lament how bad Google is now and how often the search is useless. I think many people just want search to search.
Re:DeepSeek Elastic Compute (DSec) on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:24PM (#49861129)
I'm actually the most innovative, I've written thousands of papers advancing the state of human knowledge. They're just in my basement and I don't show anyone.
Re:PipePipe: NewPipe hard fork implementing SponsorBlock on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:19PM (#49861091)
Limusic on desktop has been good for me too
Re:How to keep enjoying programming in a world of LLMs on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:31AM (#49855159)
That's great for you, but you're completely devoid of empathy if you can't understand these posts. For many, many people, the things that are left are not the enjoyable ones. People have built hobbies and careers around doing something they love and its relevance is evaporating at an unprecedented rate.
Re:Xiaomi MiMo v2.6 on Monday September 21, 2026 @05:38PM (#49793803)
Apologies for not taking the time to find it, but there was a post that tried to determine if the pelican was benchmaxxed across a bunch of models by comparing it to other SVGs, and found that it wasn't at all.
Re:GLM Built Its Own Inference Infrastructure on Thursday September 17, 2026 @06:13AM (#49738620)
Yeah it went from a great deal to unviable compared to other providers imo. They really need to find a healthy middle ground
Re:OpenSpec – A lightweight and configurable AI spec framework on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:12PM (#49735978)
If you're writing design documentation to /tmp you're not the target audience for this kind of thing
Re:I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @06:03PM (#49719485)
Some players do manage to be eligible for both, you just can't swap once you've decided
Re:I can't stop thinking about Papua New Guinea on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @05:55PM (#49719407)
It's safe to say they're both highly watched in PNG, Origin is just more of an event (a three game series, compared to the NRL which is a full season + playoffs). It's the same two sides every game, you're maroon or you're blue. Meanwhile there's 17 clubs in the NRL, I assume people from abroad pick one arbitrarily, of which only two clubs are going to make the grand final every year.
